Takanori Gomi, currently ranked as the No.1 lightweight fighter in the world by MMAWeekly.com, has signed a contract with World Victory Road. The new Japanese promotion made the announcement on Thursday that Gomi had signed to fight on its March 5 event entitled Sengoku. No opponent was named.
A report by Sherdog.com’s Jordan Breen said that Gomi is expected to receive approximately $190,000 per fight.
Gomi hasn’t fought since he lost in February of 2007 to Nick Diaz at a Pride event in Las Vegas. The bout was later ruled a no contest by the Nevada State Athletic Commission as Diaz tested positive for marijuana.
There was speculation that the Ultimate Fighting Championship was courting him after he was in attendance at UFC 79 on Dec. 29. That speculation was obviously put to rest by Thursday’s announcement.
