Now that the title fight between Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold and former UFC fighter Keith Jardine has been confirmed, there’s a question a lot of people are asking.
What about Tim Kennedy?
The former Army Ranger seemed in prime placement for a shot at the Strikeforce middleweight gold after back-to-back wins in the promotion, but after Thursday’s announcement about the new title fight being booked, he’s left on the outside looking in.
Sources have now indicated to MMAWeekly.com that Kennedy actually suffered an injury in training that forced him out of a potential bout with Rockhold in January.
While no details were available to the nature of the injury, Kennedy’s ailment was apparently serious enough that he couldn’t accept a fight in early January.
Strikeforce had set the date for Jan 7 for Rockhold’s next title defense, which will be their next major show taking place at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
Kennedy had never officially been offered the title shot with Rockhold, but all signs were pointing towards the fight happening until the suspected injury sidelined the military veteran.
For now, Rockhold will defend his belt against Jardine while Kennedy will look to get back to full health and return in 2012 and hopefully claim the next shot at the Strikeforce middleweight title.
