Joey Villasenor and Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos headline Friday night’s Strikeforce Challengers Series, the second edition of the series to be held on Showtime.

STRIKEFORCE CHALLENGERS PLAY-BY-PLAY:

-Joe Villasenor vs. Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos
R1 – Santos with a leg kick and Villasenor misses with a overhand right. Villasenor throwing bombs but missing. Santos playing the counter puncher timing Villasenor as he comes in. Villasenor with a left hook. They clinch and work for position. Villasenor gets the takedown and stands out of Santos’ guard before diving back in and passing to half guard. Villasenor stands and lands a right hand and passes to side control landing another right hand in the process. Santos rolls and stands with Villasenor landing two knees as Santos got up. They wing punches as the round ends. MMAWeekly.com scores the round 10-9 for Villasenor.

R2 – Villasenor with a left jab as they stand toe-to-toe. Santos gets hit with a left hand. They exchange wildly with neither doing damage. Santos with a kick to the body. Villasenor tries to counter with a right hand and misses. Santos with a leg kick, and another one. A spinning back kick by Santos. Villasenor with a left hand and flurries. They separate and circle and both unload bombs that miss. Santos with a jab and leg kick combo. Another spinning back kick by Santos. Santos lands a combination. They begin to brawl as the action pics up. Villasenor with a left hook and uppercut. Santos answers with a right hand as the round ends. MMAWeekly.com scores the round 10-9 for Villasenor, but was a close round.

R3 – Villasenor’s corner tells him it comes down to this round. Outside leg kick by Santos. A spinning back kick by Santos misses. Two leg kicks delivered by Santos, and another. Villasenor attempts a takedown and Santos stuffs it. Santos with a takedown and goes to work with two right hands. Santos passes and a scramble ensues. Villasenor escapes and they’re back to their feet. Santos looks tired, but both have their hands low and winging punches. Santos counters an overhand right with a left hook. The pace slows. Villasenor with a body shot. Santos with a right hand. Villasenor with a right short right hand. Villasenor with a right hook opening a cut beneath Santos’ left eye. Villasenor with a left. They wing it out the final ten seconds. MMAWeekly.com scores the final round 10-9 for Villasenor.

-Nick Thompson vs. Tim Kennedy
R1 – Kennedy misses an overhand right to open the fight. Kennedy shoots for a takedown and Thompson immediately goes for a kimura. Kennedy has Thompson’s back but still in the kimura. Kennedy gets out and has Thompson’s back. Thompson scrambles and gets back to his half guard. Kennedy takes his back again but Thompson reverses him. The scramble and Kennedy gets Thompson’s back again. With two minutes remaining, Thompson gets back to his feet but is taken back down where Kennedy transitions to the mount position. Thompson gets back to half guard, but Kennedy passes to side control and then to back mount. Kennedy in Thompson’s half guard lands a few punches. He stands, moves to north-south position and back in Thompson’s half guard. The round ends there. MMAWeekly.com scores round one 10-9 for Kennedy.

R2 – Kennedy with an outside leg kick. They feel each other out on their feet for the first 45 seconds and Kennedy lands a right hand. Kennedy shoots in and takes Thompson to the ground where he transitions to the mount. Thompson gets back to half guard where Kennedy lands a forearm strike. Kennedy moves to side control. Kennedy lands a series of right hands. Thompson take few more before tapping out due to strikes. Thompson complains to the referee and officials that he was being hit in the back of the head. The replay shows two or three strikes to the back of the head.

-Jorge Gurgel vs. Conor Heun
R1 – Gurgel with a leg kick to start the fight and Heun tries to counter but misses with a right hand. Gurgel with a leg kick. They clinch and exchange punches to the body and uppercuts. They clinch again and throw flurries. Gurgel got the better of it. Gurgel with an overhand right that lands. Gurgel working leg kicks from the outside. Heun with a right hand and Gurgel answers with one of his own and pushed Heun across the cage. Gurgel continues to land leg kicks to Heun’s lead leg. They exchange, both landing. Gurgel’s leg kicks are starting to take their toll. Heun chases Gurgel landing a big right hand. The round ends with them standing in front of each other. R2 – Heun moving forward and checks a Gurgel leg kick for the first time in the fight. They clinch and exchange shots on the inside. Heun lands a couple of good jabs. Gurgel partially lands a head kick. Gurgel lands a right hand that seems to have stunned Heun. Gurgel with another punch that woggle Heun. Heun moves forward landing a combination. Heun fires a high kick that misses. Great back and forth striking. Heun with a body shot. Leg kick by Gurgel and lands a big shot. Gurgel’s face is bloodied but flurries on Heun. The pace is frantic as Gurgel takes over the last 20 seconds of the round landing combinations and a high kick. MMAWeekly.com scores the second round 10-9 for Gurgel.

R3 – They touch gloves to start the round. Both fighters still look fresh. Heun moving forward and Gurgel circling each landing their share of punches. Heun misses a spinning heel kick. Heun gets Gurgel down for a moment but Gurgel bounces back to his feet. The pace slows. Heun catches a kick and takes Gurgel down by his heel. Gurgel rolls him and Heun works rubber guard. Gurgel moves to side control and in a scramble, Gurgel gets back to his feet. 70 seconds remain. Gurgel circles as Heun moves straight forward. Gurgel fires another high kick. The fight ends with Heun missing with another spinning heel kick. MMAWeekly.com scores the final round 10-9 for Heun.

-Sarah Kaufman vs. Shayna Baszler
R1 – Kaufman strikes first landing a jab. Baszler keeps her hands up and fires back. Baszler gets the fight to the ground from the clinch. She works ground and pound before passing Kaufman’s guard and moves to north-south position. Baszler briefly went for a choke but Kaufman gets out, rolls her over and ends up in Baszler’s half guard. Baszler works her rubber guard. The referee stands them up for no reason. Baszler gets the clinch and they jockey for position along the cage. The referee separates them with 15 seconds remaining. The end exchanging misses. MMAWeekly.com scores the round 10-9 for Baszler.

R2 – Kaufman opens the round with a leg kick. They stand toe-to-toe before clinching. As they break from the clinch, Kaufman lands a right hand. Kaufman finding her range, landing a combination. Baszler eats a couple of more punches from Kaufman that land clean. Kaufman seemingly landing at will as Baszler looks tired. Baszler standing in front of Kaufman willing to exchange, but is losing the boxing battle. Baszler, with her back against the fence, trying to time Kaufman closing the distance. Baszler with a bloody mouth is being picked apart by Kaufman this round. Kaufman closes the round with a flurry. MMAWeekly.com scores the round 10-9 for Kaufman.

R3 – Kaufman starts the round where she left off the last, but 30 seconds in Baszler shoots for a takedown. Kaufman in Baszler’s half guard landing punches to the body. Baszler gets back to full guard. Baszler goes for a leg but Kaufman defends and they’re back to their feet. Kaufman landing regularly, but Baszler clinches and Kaufman gets the takedown and was briefly in the mount before standing up choosing to keep it standing. Kaufman landing combinations with Baszler’s back against the cage. Baszler ties her up. Baszler rolls for a leg lock and Kaufman defends. The round ends with Kaufman standing over Baszler throwing shots. MMAWeekly.com scores the final round 10-9 for Kaufman.

-Cory Devela vs. Luke Rockhold
R1 – Deluva moves straight forward with a combination but is met with a right hand from Rockhold that drops him to his knees. Rockhold immediately moves around the stunned Devela and takes his back and lands a series of strikes. Rockhold sinks in a rear naked choke and the finishes the fight.
