Strikeforce returns to Las Vegas this week for its first event of the year, Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine, at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold headlines the card, defending his belt for the first time since taking it from Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in September. He faces UFC and Ultimate Fighter veteran Keith Jardine.
This will Jardine’s first fight at middleweight, leading to a lot of criticism over him getting the title shot. With Strikeforce’s first choice, Tim Kennedy, injured, they didn’t have a wide variety of options for Rockhold.
Jardine, who enlisted the help of nutritionist and former fighter Mike Dolce, had no trouble making weight, hitting 185 pounds on the nose. The champion, Rockhold, also tipped the scale at exactly 185 pounds, making the fight official.
Preliminary fighter Nah-Shon Burrell weighed in one pound above the 171-pound limit for his welterweight bout with James Terry. He was given one hour to lose the extra pound.
