Jorge Santiago wins the Strikeforce belt

MMAWeekly.com was live for Strikeforce at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. where ATT fighter Jorge Santiago won the first-ever sanctioned MMA tournament in California…

Middleweight Alternate Bout:

Dennis Hallman vs. Jeremiah Metcalf

RD1: Metcalf goes for an early takedown but Hllman catches him in a guillotine choke. Metcalf escapes and gets on top but is sweep by Hallman as they get back to thier feet. Hallman tags Metcalf a couple of times on the feet and they hit the ground with Hallman locking in a heel hook for the finish.

Featherweight Bout:

Chris Drumm vs. Evan Esguerra

RD1: They hit the ground early with Esguerra going for a guillotine choke. Drumm escapes but Esguerra reverses and ends up on top. They get back to their feet with Esguerra throwing leather as Drumm wants the fight on the ground. They jockey for position untill the end of the round.

RD2: Drumm slams Esguerra to start the round. He then secures his back and tries to finish the fight with a choke but Esguerra is defending well as he reverses positions. Esguerra lands some shots but after a scramble they get back on their feet. Drumm goes for a takedown but Esguerra defends well. Esguerra lands a solid shot and is dropping bombs but the action is halted as Esguerra landed several punches to the back of the head and is deducted a point. The doctor stops the fight as Drumm is unable to continue.

Lightweight Bout:

Clint Coronel vs. Alex Crispin

Rd1: Both fighters start the fight stalking each other wth neither doing much on the feet. Both fighters are throwing but neither are landing anything sinificant. Coronel lands a nice flurry of punches and Crispin takes the fight to the ground. Crispin is on top and landing occassional shots as Coronel is defending well. Crispin finally passes guard and goes for a side choke but abandons it as he ends the round on top of Coronel.

RD2: The round once again starts off slow as neither fighter commits to anything. Crispin pushes Coronel against the fence as he goes for a takedown. Coronel is defending well as Crispin continues to go for the takedown and finally gets it. Crispin isn’t doind much as Coronel seems to have his arms tied up. Crispin breaks free and starts to land some decent shots within the guard. Crispin really starts to land solid shots just as the round comes to an end.

RD3: Coronel looks to be tired as Crispin goes for a spinning backfist. The pace has slowed down as both fighters seem to be fatigued. Neither fighter is doing much and the crowd starts to get restless. Crispin lands a nice combination as he starts to become more active but Coronel lands a decent punch. Crispin is showboating a bit and Coronel lands a big knee that forces Crispin to go for a takedown but Coronel defends well. Coronel starts to get active just as the fight ends.

Bantamweight Bout:

Pete Sabala vs. Anthony Figueroa

RD1: Sabala gets an early takedown and lands a couple of shots before Figueroa escapes back to his feet. Sabala throw a high kick that misses and Figueroa responds with a wicked uppercut. Sabala tries to get the fight to the ground but Figuroa drops him and tries to finish him but Sabala reverses and picks Figueroa up and slams him. Figueroa reverses but Sabala locks in a guillotine choke but Figueroa survives until the end of thr round,

RD2: Figueroa immediately drops Sabala and tries to finish him but Sabala survives and reverses Figueroa to end up on top. Figueroa reverses him and Sabala goes for another guillotine choke but Figueroa escapes. They get back to their feet and Sabala again slams Figueroa. He drops a couple of shots as the round comes to an end.

MMAWeekly scores the round 10-9 for Sabala.

RD3: Figueroa hurts Sabala with a knee to the body and drops him with punches but is again unable to finish as Sabala reverses him and gets on top. Figueroa escapes and starts to land a couple of solid shots but Sabala defends well. They get back to their feet and neither fighter does much as the round ends.

MMAWeekly scores thr round 10-9 for Figueroa and scores the fight 29-28 for Sabala.

Middleweight Bout:

Josh Neal vs. Eric Lawson

RD1: Lawson gets a takedown and Neal goes for an armbar then switches to a triangle choke. Lawson tries to slam his way out of it but Neal has it tight but is unable to finish it. He continues to have Lawson trapped in it but isn’t making an effort to finish it. Neal starts landing some solid shots while Lawson is trapped in the choke as the round ends.

MMAWeekly scores the round 10-9 for Neal.

RD2: Lawson lands a straight punch that hurts Neal and he takes him down. Lawson is trying to finish him with strikes but instead gets his back and secures the choke.

Middleweight Tournament Bout:

Sean Salmon vs. Jorge Santiago

RD1: Both fighters come out tentative and Salmon lands a hook. Santiago goes for a flying knee that lands flush and knocks Salmon out. Jorge Santiago advances to the final of the Strikeforce Middleweight Tournament.

Middleweight Tournament Bout:

Trevor Prangley vs. Falaniko Vitale

RD1: Vitale lands a stinging right hand to start the fight and Prangley responds with a flurry. Prangley goes for a takedown and Vitale defends well and lands a nice knee. They get back to their feet and Prangley clinches with Vitale along the fence and lands a nice knee. They seperate and Vitale lands a straight punch and Prangley responds with a couple of hard knees and punches as they clinch again. They are seperated again and Prangley again lands some solid knees and follows up with punches. Vitale responds with a flurry of his own and is landing solid punches and Prangley responds with a flurry as they are just slugging it out. Prangley is bloodied up as they end the round clinched along the fence.

RD2: The pace is slower to start the second round but Prangey comes in with a flurry as they clinch along the fence. They sperate and both land their shots as they clinch along the fence again. They seperate and Vitale lands a low kick but Prangley respnds with a flurry of punches and knees that land on their mark. Prangley throws a punch and Vitale catches a finger to the eye as the action is stopped. Vitale is unable to continue and they go to the score cards and the fight is ruled a majority draw. By CSAC rules the referee decides the winner and Prangley is choosen as the winner by Marcos Rosales. Trevor Prangley advances to the final of the Strikeforce Middleweight Tournament.

Welterweight Bout:

Luke Stewart vs. Bryson Kamaka

RD1: Kamaka comes out swinging and Stewart goes for a takedown. They are clinched and Stewart lands a serious of knees that drop Kamaka. The referee stops the fight but Stewart lands an illegal knee while Kamaka was downed.

Luke Stewart by KO, 0:19 of the 1st RD.

The official attendance is announced as 8,233.

 

Light Heavyweight Bout:

Bobby Southworth vs. Anthony Ruiz

RD1: Southworth comes out with low kicks and taggs Ruiz with a punch and takes him down. He immediately mounts Ruiz, who gives up his back. Southworth goes for the choke but Ruiz reverses and ends up on top. Southworth gets back to his feet and they clinch along the fence. They are seperted and Southworth lands a punch but slips while throwing a kick but gets to his feet. Ruiz pushes him to the fence and they clinch. Southworth lands a nice knee but Ruiz responds with a punch. Southworth gets a takedown and ends the round in half guard.

RD2: Southworth lands a nice flurry and Ruiz responds with one of his own that hurts Southworth. Ruiz takes Southworth but the referee stops the action to check a cut. The fight has been stopped as Southworth is unable to continue due to a cut.

Welterweight Bout:

Brian Scwartz vs. Lemont Davis

RD1: Schwartz lands a nice side kick and follows it with a flurry that forces Davis to take it to the ground. Schwartz goes for a guillotine choke but Davis escapes.Not much action on the ground as they are stood up. They clinch along the fence and the round ends with both fighters clinched along the fence.

RD2: Schwartz is light on his feet as throws several jabs. Davis lands a low kick and Schwartz with punches. Davis throws a flurry of punches but Schwartz’s defends well as they clinch along the fence. Schwartz has a cut on his headand they are restarted nad Davis bull rushes Schwartz into the cage. They are clinched and Schwartz starts landing knees to the body and lands one to the groin. Action is restarted and both fighters showboat a bit to end the round.

RD3: Schwartz takes the fight to the groun but is caught in a guillotine choke. Davis holds on for a couple of minutes before Schwartz is able to escape. Schwartz stands up and gets a standing guillotine choke but Davis escapes and Schwartz lands a couple of shots as the round ends.

MMAWeekly scores the round 10-9 for Schwartz and scores the fight 29-28 for Schwartz.

Lemont Davis by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

 

Strikeforce Heavyweight Championship Bout:

Paul Buentello vs. Alistair Overeem

RD1:Overeem goes for a flying knee and Buentello responds with a flurry of punches and Overeem takes him down. Overeem is in side control and landing knees to the boedy and punches to the head. Overeem is landing solid punches to Buentello’s face. Overeem goes for a guillotine choke but Buentello escapes and gets to his feet but Overeem lands knees and punches. They are clinched up and Overeem continues to land pinches. The fight hits the ground and Overeem goes for another guillotine choke but Buentello survives and gets back to his feet. Clinched in the corner and Overeem lands knees until the round ends.

RD2: Buentello throws some nasty uppercuts as they start to trade shots. Overeem gets a takedown and starts to work some ground and pound. Overeem is content to throw shots within guard as he stays busy. They are restarted on the feet and Buentello lands a punch but Overeem gets another takedown. Overeem is landing shots from the turtled position. Buentello gets back to his feet but Overeem lands two wicked knees to Buentello’s body and Buentello falls to the ground, tapping out.

Middleweight Tournament Final Bout:

Jorge Santiago vs. Trevor Prangley

RD1: Both fighters come out cautious to start, Santiago lands a nice low kick. Santiago starts to let his hands losse and Prangley responds with a wicked body shot. Santiago lands another low kick and follows with a big hook. He lands another punch and drops Prangley but he gets back up. Santiago lands a body kick that Prangley catches but can’t get the takedown. Santiago lands a hook that hurts Prangley then a knee to the body and to the head that drops Prangley. santiago follows with two punches before the referee can stop the fight. Jorge Santiago wins the Strikeforce Middleweight Tournament.

Middleweight Bout:

Cung Le vs. Sam Morgan

RD1: Morgan bull rushes Le gets the takedown. They get back to their feet and both guys are swinging widly as Le gets another takedown. Morgan gets back up and Le throws an array of kicks before taking Le takes him down again. Back on their feet, Le lands more kicks and gets another takedown. Back on their feet, Le lands a kick and Morgan misses with a kick before Le gets another takedown. Back on their feet, Morgan lands a couple of shots but they hit the ground and Le briefly mounts him before they get back on their feet. Le lands a body kick and they scramble on the ground as the round ends.

RD2: Morgan lands acouple of shots to start the round. Morgan swining wildly as Le is forced to take him down. Le is in side control and landing punches before they get back to their feet. Morgan goes for a takedown but Le is defending well. They are clinched along the fence but sperate and Le takes Morgan down. Le mounts Morgan but he escapes to his feet. Le gets another takedown and lands in side control. Le is going for a keylock but Morgan escapes. Le locks Morgan’s arm and starts to rain down punches but Morgan gets his arm loose. Le lands some good shots just as the round comes to an end.

RD3: Morgan swings wildly to start the round but Le drops him with a punch. Le lets him back up and lands a wicked low kick as Morgan swings away. Le starts letting his hands loose and lands a kick that drops Morgan as he finishes him with strikes.
