- STRIKEFORCE RESULTS AND LIVE PLAY-BY-PLAY

MMAWeekly is live in San Jose, Calif., to bring you live results from Friday night’s Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Thomson event at the HP Pavilions.

Current Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez will defend his title against UFC veteran Josh Thomson in the main event. In another championship bout, light heavyweight champ Bobby Southworth will try to fend off Anthony Ruiz, who defeated Southworth last year in a non-title fight.

The preliminary bouts are scheduled to get underway at 6:30 p.m. PT/9:30 p.m. ET.

-Eric Jacob vs. Alexander Trivino

After getting the fight to the ground, Trivino locked on an armbar for the win.

-Jorge Interiano vs. Travis Johnson

Interiano controlled both rounds of action on the feet, using punches to batter Johnson that left him bloodied and unable to continue after two rounds.

-Cyrillo Padhillo vs. Jesse Jones

Padhillo controlled the action for the first two rounds with takedowns and ground control as Jones was unable to stop the takedown. In the final round, Jones dropped Padhillo and swarmed with a barrage but was unable to finish the fight and again was controlled for the rest of the fight.

-Alvin Cacdac vs. Brian Caraway
R1- Caraway gets the early takedown on Cacdac and works to take his back. Caraway moves from body triangle to getting his hooks in while sinking in a rear naked choke. Cacdac tries to fight out, but he is unable and he taps out.

-Bobby Stack vs. Jose Palacios
R1- The fighters trade early on with Palacios showing a great amount of quickness, landing good shots throughout the round including a number of good kicks. Stack works late in the round for a takedown, putting Palacios on his back but not doing much damage.

R2- Stack gets the takedown early in the second round, working for a ground and pound attack, trying to stay active in the guard of his opponent. Late in the session, Palacios reverses positions, but Stack almost locks on an armbar. Palacios gets out and the round ends

R3- Stack takes the fight to the ground again to open the third, moving into mount trying to finish Palacios. Palacios does a good job defending, but Stack still stays in the dominant position for most of the round.

-Chris Cariaso vs. Anthony Figueroa
R1- Cariaso takes Figueroa down quickly where he transitions to half guard and then moves to mount. Cariaso goes for a key lock from the mount, but Figueroa reverses before Cariaso gets the fight back down again. Cariaso stays aggressive on the ground for most of the round.

R2- Cariaso gets the fight down again and ends up mounting Figueroa, while again trying to go for a keylock again. Cariaso starts to reign down punches, Figueroa gives up his back. The fighters move on the ground a bit before Cariaso locks on a fight ending rear naked choke

-Jeremiah Metcalf vs. Raymond Daniels
R1- Metcalf takes Daniels down to start the fight. Daniels does lock on a guillotine choke, but Metcalf gets out. Metcalf dominates the rest of the round with ground and pound, moving to mount and almost getting a stop to the fight, pounding down on Daniels as the round ends.

R2- Metcalf dominates the second round as well, taking Daniels down early then moving to mount. Daniels struggles underneath, not able to get out, and as he rolls trying to escape, Metcalf locks on a fight ending rear naked choke.

-Elaina Maxwell vs. Miesha Tate
R1- Tate takes Maxwell down to open the fight and moves into mount very quickly. Tate then transitions to an armbar and works for the majority of the round going for the finish. As she finally extends the arm, the round ends and Maxwell survives.

R2- Tate gets mount on Maxwell again in the 2nd where she works a ground and pound attack. Maxwell is able to buck up and lock her legs onto Tate’s head and pull her backwards. Tate gets out of the scissor lock and moves back into side control before the round ends.

R3- Tate shoots in trying for another takedown, but Maxwell is able to hold onto the clinch against the cage. Maxwell seems to be holding the cage a few times, while the referee remains oblivious, but eventually warns her. Maxwell ends up taking Tate’s back in the fight. Maxwell tries for a choke then an armbar, but the fight ends.

-Bobby Southworth vs. Anthony Ruiz
R1- Southworth works a good strategy early on, taking Ruiz down, getting into side mount and then taking his back. Ruiz is able to defend and reverse positions. Southworth gets back to the ground, he transitions to an armbar and then an omoplata, but Ruiz stays out of the submission.

R2- The fighters trade takedowns in the 2nd round with Southworth maintaining control for a longer amount of time. Southworth is reversed late in the 2nd, but almost locks on a triangle choke. Not much action as the round closes.

R3- Very slow moving round with both fighters landing takedowns. Just as quickly as one gets a takedown, the other reverses, with neither gaining an overly dominant position. Very close round as both fighters seem to be tiring.

R4- Another extremely slow moving fight as the crowd becomes more and more restless. Southworth manages a couple of takedowns, and when he ends up on his back, he does try for a kimura, but Ruiz defends well.

R5- Southworth dominates the final round, taking Ruiz to the ground, almost locking on a kimura, then taking his opponent’s back and trying for an armbar. Nothing exciting, but Southworth looks much stronger in the round

-Nam Phan vs. Billy Evangelista
R1- Evangelista works for a clinch early on and then moves to take Phan to the ground. Evangelista spends the remainder of the round grounding and pounding Phan from the top while maintaining control throughout.

R2- Phan comes out strong in the 2nd round hitting Evangelista with a good number of strikes. Evangelista struggles in the stand-up game with Phan in the round. After working tirelessly and taking an elbow to the side of the head that opens a good size cut, Evangelista finally gets the Phan to the ground before the round ends.

R3- The third round slows down significantly with Phan trying to strike, but Evangelista is able to keep tight in the clinch and go for takedowns. The punches and kicks landed with power were landed by Phan in the round, but Evangelista controlled the bigger part of the round with his ground game.

-Gilbert Melendez vs. Josh Thomson
R1- The fighters trade to start the fight and Melendez shoots in for a takedown, but Thomson defends well and shrugs him off. Thomson this time shoots in and lands a nice takedown on Melendez where he works a ground and pound attack while keeping Gilbert on his back. Gilbert is able to reverse and take Thomson down, but Josh works back to his feet quickly.

R2- Thomson comes out firing in the 2nd round landing some heavy kicks that seem to rock Melendez. The fighters settle in standing up with Thomson hitting a much bigger number of effective strikes. Thomson lands a big knee about halfway through the round, but Melendez recovers. As the round is about to end, Thomson lands a nice takedown.

R3- The fighters trade heavy strikes in the third round with Melendez attacking more, but Thomson landing the better strikes. Thomson rocks Melendez again as he’s coming forward, but the champ recovers. Melendez continues to come forward, but Thomson counters well and lands a takedown later in the round.

R4- Thomson peppers Melendez with body kicks in the third round while using a very effective front kick that is almost like a jab keeping Melendez away from him. Thomson lands a nice left-right combination that backs Melendez away. Thomson scores a nice takedown on Melendez before taking his back. Thomson tries to lock on a rear naked choke, but Melendez barely escapes as the round ends.

R5- Thomson hits a takedown on Melendez early, but the fighters get back to their feet. Thomson stays elusive while landing good front kicks in the third round. As Melendez continues to pursue, Thomson lands another takedown and also a front kick that lands squarely on Melendez’s jaw. Late in the round, Thomson clinches up with Melendez, controlling him as the fight ends.
