Strikeforce returns to its stomping grounds of San Jose, Calif., on Saturday night for the first time since Diaz vs. Noons II in October.
Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz once again headlines the card at the HP Pavilion, this time defending his belt against Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos, husband and training partner of women’s middleweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Santos.
Diaz and Santos each weighed in at 169.5 pounds, a full half-pound under the 170-pound limit for their title fight.
Diaz, slightly taller than Santos, tried to stare a hole through Santos’ head when they squared off for photos, but Santos didn’t waver.
“He’s a brawler and he kicks well. He’s a kickboxer brawler. He’s a good fighter,” Diaz said about his opponent leading up to the weigh-ins. “He has knockout power and he hits hard. He can hurt you with one punch. If you hit anyone right with a good punch, they’ll go down.”
Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza also defends his belt on Saturday night. He squares off against Robbie Lawler.
Jacare had no trouble making weight, stepping on the scale at 184.25 pounds. Neither did his opponent. Lawler came in one pound under the 185-pound championship limit.
