SAN DIEGO – Gilbert Melendez has done a lot of work to get the stellar reputation he has in the fight game. As one of the few fighters outside of the UFC to get his name thrown into the pound-for-pound discussion, Melendez continues to impress with wins on his way to an inevitable spot on the UFC roster.

“I’m proud of myself,” Melendez told on Thursday. “I’ve come a long way without the power of Zuffa behind me. Now that I have the marketing machine of Zuffa and the approval of them, things have… skyrocketed for me.”

But before he can make his debut in the Octagon, Melendez will have his hands full with Jorge Masvidal at a Strikeforce event on Dec. 17 in San Diego. The Strikeforce lightweight champ knows his challenger is dangerous and talks about those dangers in the video below.

In addition, Melendez shared his thoughts on Frankie Edgar being viewed as the world’s pound-for-pound No. 2 fighter in the eyes of Dana White. Check it out...

  • Gilbert deserves being consider for the “pound-for-pound” ranking more than Frankie Edgar.

Frankie is on there because he was the underdog against Penn twice and got dropped 863 times against Maynard in both first rounds of the championship fights and still came back. Melendez should be up there too, but he has to fight consistent top-competition before fans will accept that as a reality.

frankie is the ufc champion,so he fights the better guys. melendez not sure about that.

  • I love Gilbert Melendez’s style, I love his killer insticnt, but to say that he deserves more P4P recognition than Frankie Edgar is completely retarded. When Melendez comes over to the UFC and holds his own with the big boys of MMA, I’ll put him up there with Edgar. I think that would be an awesome fight by the way.
