Two fights have been added to the upcoming Strikeforce Challengers show on Oct 22 in Fresno, California as Lavar Johnson faces Virgil Zwicker, while Shana Olsen meets Julia Budd in a women’s bout on the card as well.
Johnson, who actually took several bullets just last year, returned to action earlier in 2010 to pick up his first win since recovering from the shooting. Now he’s looking to add to his win totals as he faces Zwicker in a heavyweight bout on the card.
After spending 30 days in the hospital, Johnson was quick to want to return to his passion of fighting, and he did so in emphatic fashion with the win over Lolohea Mahe in May.
The other fight added on Wednesday will pit Shana Olsen, who was originally gunning for a shot at Erin Toughill, but will now face Canadian Muay Thai champion Julia Budd instead.
With an undefeated 4-0 record, Olsen is hoping to build her credentials to eventually get a shot at current 145lb Strikeforce champion Cris “Cyborg” Santos, but first she’ll have to get by a very tough stand-up fighter from Canada.
Julia Budd, who is making her pro MMA debut, is actually the only fighter to hold a win over former top Strikeforce female fighter Gina Carano in a Muay Thai bout.
The card featuring both new fights will hit Showtime on Friday, Oct 22 from Fresno, and will also feature a welterweight rematch between Roger Bowling and Bobby Voelker.
