The ninth iteration of the Strikeforce Challengers series takes place on Friday night in Everett, Wash. The main event features heavyweight hopefuls Shane Del Rosario and Lolohea Mahe battling it out. The co-main event features Strikeforce women’s welterweight champion Sarah Kaufmann taking on her toughest challenge to date in Roxanne Modafferi.

STRIKEFORCE PLAY-BY-PLAY:

Shane Del Rosario vs. Lolohea Mahe

R1 – Del Rosario lands first with a leg kick. Mahe misses with a big right hook. Del Rosario with another leg kick. Mahe tries to counter the kick with a punch. They clinch and before long the referee separates them. Mahe looking to load up with a right hand. The clinch again and Del Rosario lands a knee to the groin and Mahe is given time to recover. The replay shows it was a legal knee. The fight is restarted. Mahe throws a straight right down the middle. Del Rosario lands a left hook and throws a high kick. They clinch and Del Rosario lands a knee hurting Mahe and followed with a knee to the body. Mahe just covers up and falls over. The fight is stopped. Del Rosario remains undefeated.

Sarah Kaufman vs. Roxanne Modafferi (Strikeforce Women’s 135-Pound Title Bout)

R1 – Modafferi rushes across the cage and throws a flying knee. They immediately clinch. Modafferi lands some knees to the body as they jockey for position against the fence. Modafferi gets Kaufman to the ground. Kaufman ties Modafferi up inside her closed guard. The referee stands them up with two minutes remaining. Kaufman lands a combination and another. Modafferi clinches and tries to land a throw on Kaufman. Kaufman having none of it. The round ends with the ladies clinched along the cage. Not much happened in the round. Modafferi got a takedown but did nothing with it. Kaufman landed a couple of good shots.

R2 – Kaufman’s boxing begins to shine landing several big shots on Modafferi. Modafferi wants to get the action to the ground but Kaufman has other plans. They clinch and Kaufman flurries as they separate. Modafferi tries to pull guard. It doesn’t work. minutes of clinching. Kaufman lands knees as Modafferi tries to get a takedown. Kaufman lands a few big shots with a flurry. MMAWeekly.com scored the round 10-9 for Kaufman.

R3 – Modafferi fires a high kick that’s blocked. Kaufman lands a right hand and another. Modaffer ties her up. Modafferi gets a takedown and tries to ground and pound Kaufman. Kaufman gets back to her feet at the midway mark. The referee separates them and has some extra tape cut off Kaufman’s glove. Action resumes with Kaufman landing punches but Modafferi clinches and pulls guard and works for a submission. Kaufman picks her up and slams Modafferi to the canvas knocking her out.

Cory Devela vs. Bobby Voelker

R1 – No touch of the gloves in this one. After a quick exchange they clinch. Devela gets double underhooks and takes Voelker down where he mounts him. Devela punches while Voelker bucks. Voelker is able to free himself and get back to his feet but finds himself pressed against the cage. Devela secures another takedown. Devela lands punches inside Voelker’s half guard. Devela goes for a guillotine but Voelker gets out and gains top position. And that’s how the round ends. MMAWeekly.com scores the round 10-9 for Devela.

R2 – Voelker storms across the cage but Devela clinches and gets the takedown. Voelker sweeps and lands short punches. Devela isolates an arm and lands punches from the bottom. Voelker landing a few punches but Devela going a good job staying active and controling Voelker’s posture. Voelker doing enough to not get stood up but not inflicting damage. Devela works to get a leg but Voelker quickly retreats. As the round ends, Devela lands a combination and a big right hand. A close round but MMAWeekly.com scores it 10-9 for Voelker.

R3 – Devela ties Voelker up immediately and pushes him to the fence. They separate and Devela shoots in for a double leg takedown but doesn’t get it. Voelker lands a knee as Devela gets back to his feet. Devela clinches, dropping down for a single leg but doesn’t get it. Voelker with an upper cut that sends Devela back. Devela returns fire and tries to get the fight to the ground. Devela attempts a guillotine and jumps to guard but Voelker quickly gets out. Devela looks to get a hold of a heel but Voelker gets out. They are both exhausted and winging punches. Another close round. It’s in the hands of the judges. Voelker gets the nod to the boos of the crowd.

Ron “Abongo” Humphrey vs. Mike Kyle

R1 – Kyle lands a combination. Humphrey attempts a takedown but Kyle brushes it off. Humphrey clinches and presses Kyle against the fence. They separate and Humphrey attacks landing a right hand and a flurry before taking Kyle down. Kyle kicks Humphrey off and tries to get back up but Humphrey reacts and attempts a choke. Kyle gets out and escapes another choke and gets back to his feet. Kyle with a flying knee. Kyle attempts another flying knee and Humphrey takes him down. Kyle sweeps to obtain top position. He passes Humphrey’s guard and mounts but Humphrey scrambles and gets back on top. The round ends with Humphrey working another guillotine choke. MMAWeekly.com scores the round 10-9 for Humphrey.

R2 – Kyle works his jab and Humphrey lands a couple of leg kicks. Humphrey lands a left hand but Kyle connects with a combination that had Humphrey looking for a takedown. Kyle gets the takedown and Humphrey secures a leg. Kyle gets out before Humphrey could apply a knee bar or work for a heel hook. Humphrey inside Kyle’s guard and Kyle ties him up. The referee stands them up pretty quickly. Kyle gets a body lock to turn into a takedown where he mounts Humphrey. Humphrey gives up his back. Kyle lands punches to the side of Humphrey’s head. Humphrey rolls and Kyle applies a rear naked choke forcing Humphrey to tap. Kyle extends his win streak to five.

Caros Fodor vs. Thomas Diagne

R1 – With a touch of gloves the Showtime portion of the card begins. Fodor moving forward aggressively. Diagne moves away and lands a leg kick. Fodor lands a right hand as Diagne retreats, dropping him to the canvas. Diagne recovers but gets knocked down again with left hook. He gets back to his feet and ties Fodor up. Fodor lands knees to the body from the clinch. They separate with two minutes remaining and Fodor stalks. They clinch along the cage. They separate again and Diagne lands a spinning back kick to the body of Fodor. They clinch and that’s how the round ends. MMAWeekly.com scores the round 10-8 for Fodor.

R2 – Diagne pumps his jab, but Fodor closes the distance and clinches and goes to work with knees to the thighs and body. Diagne unable to do anything pressed against the cage. He spins for better position and lands a right hand. Diagne gets free and attempts a flying knee and high kick. Fodor immediately ties him up and slams him to the canvas. Diagne gives up his back and Fodor lands punches to the head. Diagne momentarily got back to his feet but is immediately taken back down. Fodor slaps on a key lock but Diagne rolls himself free and scrambles back to his feet. The round ends with the two fighters clinched against the fence. R3 – A spinning back kick by Diagne to start the final round, but Fodor presses him against the fence. Diagne gets free and lands big shot. Diagne needs distance to do damage and Fodor is not giving it to him. Fodor gets the fight to the ground and works for a kimura from side control. He steps over and cranks. Diagne rolls. It’s in deep, but Diagne gets out. Fodor clinches and lands knees. Diange now attempts a takedown but is stuffed. Fodor lands hammerfists to his head mixed with hooks. Diagne rolls to his back and Fodor starts to pound away. The round ends and Diagne survives, but loses a one-sided fight. MMAWeekly.com scores the final round 10-9 for Fodor and the bout 30-26.
