Stephan Bonnar UFC 139Stephen Bonnar and Dave Herman, following their participation at UFC 153 in Brazil, on Friday were the latest athletes snagged by drug testing. Bonnar tested positive for steroids, while Herman popped hot for marijuana.

When the UFC makes the trek down to Brazil, as in many other locations outside of the U.S. and Canada, there is often no athletic commission to oversee the event or drug testing. In such cases, the UFC regulates itself under the eye of former Nevada Athletic Commission executive director Marc Ratner, and contracts a third party, accredited drug testing company.

Bonnar and Herman tested positive as a result of such procedures, and the UFC on Saturday issued the following statement that includes an admission of guilt by Bonnar and Herman:

“Stephan Bonnar and Dave Herman tested positive for banned substances following their bouts at UFC 153. The UFC has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance-enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents. Both fighters have admitted taking the banned substances and have orally agreed to suspensions. Once the suspensions have been reduced to written agreements, the results of their tests and the agreed upon suspensions will be sent to the Association of Boxing Commissions official record-keeper so other jurisdictions will be on notice.”

Stephan Bonnar retired following the bout, while Dave Herman has lost his last three fights for the UFC.

Bonner should get his money back for his steroids they didn’t work very well.

I hope Bonner is never welcome back to the UFC. Never won more then 3 in a row, tested positive for boldenone for his rematch with Griffin and now this. It’s unacceptable. Thank goodness Anderson won. It would have caused so much chaos if you lost that and it got over turned. As for Herman, this is his second time testing positive for marjiuana and third loss so best of luck to him getting some wins elsewhere.

I agree to a point with you CombatScienceMMA. If you included the “Testosterone Replacement Therapy” users (a group that Forrest Griffin belongs to) as well as steroid violators, I would agree 110%. Low testosterone is NOT a disease but a fact of life and why MMA is a young man’s sport. If they allow that, they should allow Bionic’s when they become feasible.

I agree with what you are saying. But you have to remember if it wasn’t for that first Girffin Bonnar fight…the UFC probably wouldn’t be what it is today…or it would be seriously behind where it is.

He pee pee’d all over his legacy that he built. While never a title contender he always came to fight and could take a beating!

      Herman…who cares.

I don’t even care for that fight. Not at all. It wasn’t a display of high level martial arts, it was a back and fourth fist fight (yes with a lot of heart) but it attracted more of the fans who just wanted a wreck less fight. GSP, Anderson Silva, Matt Hughes, those are high level martial arts fighters. But yes your right, that fight is the one that helped take the sport main stream in homes everywhere.

    What a moron Bonnar is

  • J

Masteron doesn’t do **** other than make you look good so I don’t get why he would take it, I guess it helps with the weight cut but not performance gain.

    • Yannick Messaoud

if your total BF% is higher then 10% masteron wont do **** beleive me LOL

  • Fuser

Okay… People are ready to sip on the strongest batch of haterade when it comes to a guy like Bonnar taking steroids. The mother****** just wants to recover fast. That is the number one reason that people take the ****. Not to get ginormous, not because they make you a more dangerous martial artist, not because they turn you into a rabid animal foaming at the mouth ready to lay down the pain train. They take the **** just so that they can train, compete, and recover (ad infinitum) faster than a 30+ year old’s body would normally allow.

So, to all these people saying Bonnar’s use of steroids “didn’t work”, your understanding of PEDs and their use is simply not accurate.

    • Yannick Messaoud

masteron is a stack steroid, taken on its own it does not do much, this is just bad judgement from is camp and proof they know nothing about steroids. MMA fighters need to avoid equipoise, winstrol V, long ester testosterone, masteron, and deca they stay too long on the blood, they need to use short ester like suspension even then trenbolone acetate wont do nothing it is hard on cardio.

Your undereducated, roids help men in so many ways from reaction time to vision to speed. To make a long story short it makes you a better hunter, all of the critical senses needed to hunt are enhanced. Remember how fas Barry Bonds could turn on a 95 mph fastball or the speed of Ben Johnson. Cheaters belong in the casino not amongst honorable sportsmen.

Tell me more.. You seem insecure.

    • BizzleZX10R

Really? He wasn’t on Dr. perscribed TRT or anything. He tried to use a PED, knowing exactly what his post fight drug test was going to entail.
He wanted to be the guy who beat Anderson Silva.
      Period.

    • duderama

well we know that they are illegal

  • guil cortez

Come on, do we really blame Bonnar, he was just facing the best pound for pound fighter in the ufc. Their is a reason he was a 14-1 underdog, because hes fucken Stephan Bonnar. The guy had no reason to be in the same ring as Anderson, but the ufc needed someone to put in front of him. I don’t blame Stephan he knew what he was going against, and he needed the roids. too bad they didnt help to much
