Stephan Bonnar was an unexpected guest on MMAWeekly SoundOff Radio today, and confirmed what Michael Disanto reported yesterday, he is off the October 3rd UFC live Spike TV card due to a broken hand. Bonnar was scheduled to face James Irvin, and it remains unclear whether the fight will be pushed back, or if the UFC will replace Stephan with another opponent.
“The Ultimate Fighter” season one light heavyweight runner-up described his injury as a freak accident. He said, “It was one of those freak things man. You know? Like how many fights have I had, and boxing matches? I actually hit the dude on the hip of all places. It’s not even a good story.” Stephan was wearing 16 oz. gloves when the injury occurred, but as he put it, “I guess the pelvis is stronger than the metacarpal.”
Questioned about how long he’ll be out, Stephan replied, “Broken bones they say like six to eight weeks until they’re healed…I’ll keep drinking my milk, and do what I can, work on my kicks now.”
Stephan discussed the frustration of getting hurt this close to an event. “I’m finally in the acceptance phase, so I’m starting to get over it. But yeah at first I was in denial and really pissed off, and now I’m dealing with it. I’m trying to look at the bright side, what I can use this to do, and what I came up with was improve my kicks more.”
Whether or not James Irvin will have an opponent is still up in the air, but Bonnar would like to see the fight pushed back to a later date. He commented, “Hopefully we can just push this fight back.” Bonnar will be hard to replace with a fighter on this short of notice who carries his notoriety. Joe Silva’s got his work cut out for him.
