The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday officially announced UFC 111 for March 27 in Newark, N.J.
Welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre headlines the event at the Prudential Center, defending his belt against top contender Dan Hardy. Top heavyweight contender Shane Carwin and former UFC champion Frank Mir will meet in the co-main event to declare an interim heavyweight titleholder while current champ Brock Lesnar is on the mend.
On a six-fight winning streak, St-Pierre (19-2) looks to defend his belt for the fourth time in succession. It is his first action since healing up from an injury suffered in a win over Thiago Alves at UFC 100.
Hardy (24-6) is on a seven-fight roll, earning his shot at St-Pierre with a dominant decision victory over Mike Swick at UFC 105 in November.
Mir (13-4) has served both as UFC heavyweight champion and interim champion in the past. He is 4-1 in his last five bouts, his lone loss being to Lesnar. He choked Cheick Kongo unconscious at UFC 107 to set up the bout with Carwin.
Undefeated at 11-0, Shane Carwin has been on a meteoric rise since entering the ranks of the UFC. He has never seen the second round in a fight. In fact, his longest fight was his first; it lasted two minutes, 11 seconds.
