MMAWeekly’s Lee Whitehead sat down with Pride Middleweight Grand Prix Champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua this past weekend in England for a one-on-one extensive video interview.
In England as the cornerman for his brother, Murilo “Ninja” Rua, Shogun was very forthcoming in this MMAWeekly exclusive. He spoke about his confidence and training for his upcoming fight with Kevin Randleman and the importance of a great performance on Pride’s U.S. debut in October. He also discussed his desire to rematch Mark Coleman, the man he actually wanted to fight in Las Vegas, but that’s not all.
There have been rumors that Shogun’s management has been in negotiations with Pride about a New Year’s Eve bout and one of the possible opponents being discussed is apparently Pride Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko. In the interview, Shogun comments on whether these rumors are just that or if they are fact, as well as his thoughts on facing Fedor.
He also discussed the possibility of fighting at heavyweight, the possibility of having to face Chute Boxe teammate Wanderlei Silva in next year’s Grand Prix, what would have happened if they had met in the finals of the last Middleweight Grand Prix, and more.
