Shogun RuaFormer UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua had an eventful trip to Rio de Janeiro recently when his car was stopped and he was robbed at gunpoint.

Shogun was in Rio earlier this month to do some promotional work for a sponsor. He and his manager, Eduardo Alonso, went out to dinner with fellow UFC fighter Demian Maia, who was also in town representing one of his sponsors.

After dropping Alonso and Maia off at their hotel in Barra da Tijuca, Shogun was driving a friend’s car back to his own hotel when he was stopped by another car. Four armed men robbed him and stole his friend’s car.

Shogun was not harmed.

“We were in Rio de Janeiro with Demian representing a sponsor, and we went out to dinner with the Shogun. He was there also taking photos for another sponsor,” Alonso told Brazilian news site PVT. “By the end of the night, he left us in our hotel in Barra da Tijuca, and went to Niterói, where he was staying.

“On his way, driving a friend’s car, he was stopped by another car and four armed individuals and stole his friend’s car, stole Shogun’s shirt, stole his money, and said, ‘I know who you are, you’re a fighter. Don’t try anything.’ It was an unfortunate situation.”

Shogun broke his nose in his most recent fight with Dan Henderson. He recently had surgery to repair his nose, but it is unclear when he will return to the Octagon.

    I’m glad he’s okay.

Same here. Sometimes I troll you guys for the fun of it, but I don’t joke about this kind of stuff. Kind of why I don’t go south of 8 Mile.

      • Bucket of Chicken

        That’s a good attitude, lad

      • Bucket of Chicken

I wouldn’t want to run into Papa Doc and the Free World gangstas.

It’s easy to rob people when concealed carry is illegal.

    • MuayThaiFood

It’s easy to rob people when concealed carry is legal and it’s 4 guns to one too so what’s your point? Either way Shogun gets robbed or killed likely. Is some cash and your car worth risking your life over?

      • Ian Price

The point I was trying to make was a pro-2nd amendment one

        • MuayThaiFood

Well my friend, I’m not against the second amendment in any way, shape or form but more guns aren’t going to solve the crime problem in Brazil. Less economic disparity and corruption are what Brazil needs.

          • Ian Price

A lot of truth to that…

    • Gary Fredericks

Concealed carry is a joke unless you actually TRAIN in reality based scenarios or programs such as those by Front Sight or similar. Go check out an RBSD or Krav Maga school and try out some of their disarm drills. You may be shocked that it is nothing like one would see in Walker Texas Ranger episodes. Heck, even local tactical classes would be good. Most FL carriers that I know have a skewed view on how conflicts go down, and never have even been in a schoolyard fight let alone a gunfight.

I’m all for arming yourself/myself. Problem is most FL carriers are living in a fantasy world where just having the gun is gonna make them a self defense machine or ready to take on Obama and the gubbermint when they come to take it from their cold dead hands.

That’s not true entirely. There are numerous cases of people getting jumped in Texas and then shot by CCL people. Untrained people. It depends on the person. I mean, I’m just saying. You can’t make a blanket statement like that. If someone approaches you who obviously has bad intentions, the weapon comes out. It depends on the situation and the person. People don’t get robbed at gunpoint very often in Texas who have CCL’s.

    wat

  • Mario Lopez

Man Shogun can’t catch a break first the Hendo comeback now this!

  • used2bgood

If four random unarmed people approach Shogun and try to rob him, he is going to win…but when there is a gun involved, he should be happy with staying alive and well. Hope he gets over the stress quick. I want to see him fight Gustaff again or another top LHW.

    • The milkman

Not exactly. If four of me tried robbing shogun unarmed we would get away. I’m 6’6 275 in good shape and trained mma for years. He’s not gonna knock out four of me in a row.

      • Guts316

Ok milkman. You would be tired as soon as you got out of the car. Go back to your hotpockets. Shogun would cave a hole in your face and take a Sh*t in it.

yea im 7″ 8 inches myself and 350lbs

      • Bucket of Chicken

        I bet you’re a 10x Pride GP champion also

      • Milosc

Without making any specific judgements on Milkman’s validity: the last three posters strike me as people who’ve never been jumped or really fought anyone

*(He could have been using a hypothetical scenario, and your Ad Hominem thinking spells “insecurity” to those who understand

        His reasoning is sound)

He’d probably gas after the 1st guy.

I know there is plenty of crime in the US but Brazil is the worse. I would never want to visit that country. That is why everyone who gets a chance tries to move out of that country.

    • MuayThaiFood

That’s the same argument my kid used to use when I tried to get him to eat something new. Never tried it but he just knew he wasn’t going to like it. I spent a month there. Yes, you have to be aware and there’s always some risk but you could also avoid swimming in Hawaii for fear of being attacked by a shark.

I’m surprised they didn’t make him sign the stuff they stole from him to raise the value. I would’ve made him sign the wallet.
