Shogun Rua at UFC 139Heading into Saturday night’s UFC on Fox 4, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua had a golden opportunity before him to get another crack at the UFC light heavyweight championship.

The winner of his headlining bout with Brandon Vera was originally slated to automatically become the number one contender. Some backlash from fans changed the scenario, however, leading UFC president Dana White to open the race up to the best-performing light heavyweight at the top of the card.

Shogun pulled off the victory in a hard-fought battle with Vera that went deep into the fourth round, but it wasn’t enough. Brazilian countryman Lyoto Machida’s knockout of Ryan Bader scored higher on the impression perception scale, leading “The Dragon” into the next title shot.

“All four guys were ready to fight for the belt,” Shogun stated after the fight. “I think Lyoto is a top five and he deserves right now to be the next contender and let’s wait for my opportunity.”

Not sure what exactly is next for his career, Shogun made it clear that he wants to move on and keep moving forward.

“I’m happy fighting. I just want to keep fighting. Let’s see what happens; let’s see what the UFC decides for my future for me.”

Shogun just wants to keep fighting? Why didnt he have that sama attitude when offered Glover Texeira? I am not sure he would take this fight if offered a 2nd time.

  • if Glover beats Rampage theres no way Shogun can turn that fight down a 2nd time because Glover would have beaten a legitimate top 10 LHW that everyone knows…that excuse that nobody knows Glover wouldnt holdup…Shogun better get ready cause Glover is coming and hes gonna beat Shogun down…

    • Lesnardo

rampage is not a legitimate top 10 anymore. He is top 10 in ranking only…kinda like Big Nog.

How long is Gustafsson out for? Let him fight Shogun in his return fight to remind Shogun why he is no longer considered elite. After last nights performance he has no business talking about fighting Jones for the title.

  • I don’t get all the Shogun blasting. He fights as often as the majority of fighters of his caliber. His last fight before the Vera fight, was a 5 round Epic showdown with Dan Henderson. He got beat down by Jon Jones. Took the Title from Machida. Clearly, he should have won the first Machida fight. I don’t see how you guys are saying Gustafsson and Glover have him scared and are better. Nonsense.

I really want to see Shogun vs Rashad. No reason for it not to happen now, and no better time for it. Winner gets next title shot.
