On Tuesday, famed boxing promoter Don King issued a “cease and desist” order to MMA organization Shine Fights stating that he had exclusive rights to promote former world champion boxer turned MMA fighter Ricardo Mayorga, who is set to face Din Thomas on pay-per-view on May 15.
Shine Fights president Devin Price on Wednesday issued a statement refuting King’s claims, and added that while King has promotional rights to Mayorga as a boxer, they have the contract for his MMA services.
“Shine Fights has a valid and exclusive promotional contract with Ricardo Mayorga for mixed martial arts,” said Price. “We are pleased to offer both MMA fans and boxing fans a great night of MMA action on Saturday, May 15.”
King has worked with Mayorga during his boxing career, but according to the release from Shine on Wednesday the promotion has no doubts that their headline fight will go on without any further interruptions.
Mayorga will be making his MMA debut after a long and storied boxing career, and he has no easy task in front of him as he faces former UFC lightweight Din Thomas in a catchweight bout of 160lbs.
The fight will headline the pay-per-view card set to take place on Saturday night May 15 from North Carolina, and also features several other former UFC and Pride veterans on the card.
