MMA Weekly has learned that former Shooto Middleweight Champion Jake Shields is not going to be appearing on the upcoming IFC “Rock ‘N Rumble” show scheduled for July 30th in Reno, NV. Shields had been advertised as fighting Roan “Jacuo” Carnerio in the main event, but will not be fighting on the card.
According to Shields, “I’ve been getting calls from people asking if I’ll be on the show but I’m not. There were talks of me appearing but due to an injury I sustained at Abu Dhabi I won’t be fighting on the show. I don’t know why they are advertising me as fighting because I was never really on the show to begin with.”
With July out of the question, Jake will shift his focus to recovering 100% in hopes of getting back into MMA action for the first time this year. “My manager (Cesar Gracie) is working on something for me in August, so we’ll see if that works out. If not then I’ll be fighting in San Jose in October and then would like to get a couple more fights in by the end of the year.”
The San Jose show that Shields is referring to is the first ever CSAC sanctioned MMA show in California’s history. Along with Jake, currently scheduled to appear on the card are Josh Thomson, Cesar Gracie, and Frank Shamrock.
Shields is most known for being the last American fighter to hold a Shooto world title, and at this year’s Abu Dhabi World Championships he placed third in his weight class, defeating TUF Season 1 middleweight winner Diego Sanchez in the process.
Prior to losing the Shooto belt this past December to current Hero’s lightweight tournament fighter Akira Kikuchi, Shields had previously defeated Kikuchi, UFC veteran Jeremy Jackson, and Pride Bushido stars Hayoto “Mach” Sakurai, and Milton Viera.
