In addition to filling up its Jan. 17 debut event in Ireland, the Ultimate Fighting Championship on Monday also confirmed three more bouts for its Super Bowl weekend event in Las Vegas.
UFC 94 is headlined by a mega-fight between current welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and lightweight champion B.J. Penn. The bout will be for the St. Pierre’s 170-pound divisional title.
The bouts confirmed on Monday include Manny Gamburyan’s return to action following a devastating 12-second knockout loss to Robert Emerson at UFC 87. He will face Thiago Tavares, who is likely fighting for his UFC life. Tavares has lost three of his four most recent bouts, including the last two.
Despite maintaining a 10-2 professional record, Jake O’Brien is likely in the same position as Tavares. He has lost his last two fights in the Octagon and needs desperately to get back on track. He faces no easy task in Christian Wellisch. The American Kickboxing Academy fighter lost his most recent bout as well, to Shane Carwin at UFC 84.
The other UFC 94 bout announced on Monday is between Ultimate Fighter alumnus Matt Arroyo and Dan Cramer, who will be making his Octagon debut.
Already announced for the Jan. 31 event is a light heavyweight showdown between No. 3 ranked Lyoto Machida and No. 10 ranked Thiago Silva, and another 205-pound bout pitting Stephan Bonnar against Jon Jones.
