Saffiedine, Mousasi and Huge List of Strikeforce Fighters Headed to the UFC

Posted on by Damon Martin

Gegard Mousasi at StrikeforceThe list of Strikeforce fighters heading to the UFC is growing with more names announced on Tuesday.

While the list does not comprise every single fighter that could eventually be brought over to compete in the Octagon, UFC Tonight revealed a major list of former Strikeforce fighters heading to the UFC later this year.

Daniel Cormier will of course move to the UFC from the Strikeforce heavyweight division when he faces Frank Mir at UFC on Fox 7 in April.

As of yet, former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett has not been confirmed for a return to the Octagon, but that doesn’t mean the door is closed to him coming back.

In the light heavyweight division, Gegard Mousasi and Gian Villante are both headed to the UFC’s 205-pound division. Mousasi is coming off a win over Mike Kyle at the final Strikeforce show marking his return to action after a long absence due to injury.

At middleweight, Strikeforce champion Luke Rockhold will be headed to the UFC along with Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, Tim Kennedy, Roger Gracie and Lorenz Larkin.

New Strikeforce champion Tarec Saffiedine earned a contract in the UFC with his win over Nate Marquardt, but both fighters will be competing in the Octagon this year. In addition to those two 170-pound fighters, Roger Bowling, Jason High and Bobby Voelker will head to the UFC.

The Strikeforce lightweight division will provide the biggest influx of fighters coming to the UFC with champion Gilbert Melendez already set to face Benson Henderson at UFC on Fox 7, as well as former champion Josh Thomson coming back to the UFC for the first time since 2004.

Also headed to the Octagon will be Ryan Couture, K.J. Noons, Pat Healy, Adriano Martins, and Kurt Holobaugh, who will actually drop to 145 pounds upon his arrival in the promotion.

There could be more fighters added to the UFC from the Strikeforce roster, but according to UFC Tonight that is the current list as it stands.

Great group of fighters coming over to the UFC. I’m curious to see how many of them make title runs though in their respective weight classes. I think a few of them certainly have the skillset to do so.

  • Cuntlick

Great news. Keep the talents coming!

    • Oswald Cobblepott

Great news indeed, I hope it results in better fight cards than we’ve been seeing lately rather than more fight cards.

Yea, if anything with the injury bug lately now there could be some good enough talent to fill the slots and maybe create new stars.

What Dana thinks to do with the other Women’s BW in Strikeforce that are not involved in contracts with Invicta FC or Dream?

Because seems that he wants a WBW division only to feeds Rousey with opponents, not to build a real division …

Cristiane Santos now is available but I think is a better WFW, and Germaine de Randamie, Julie Kedzie and Kerry Vera are still not involved with other promotions.

Never in history have we been closer to having all the best talent in the same organization. A great time to be an MMA fan

I think its great that so many guys are coming over. It means deeper cards. Should someone get hurt, they’ll be able to plug in someone else easily. Sure some guys possibly wont cut it but for now I’m just gonna enjoy it. Hope they bring over Masvidal and Fodor.

Doubt dana wants barnett in ufc, cause dana dont want cain or silva to lose their belts cause of endorsements. If they lose he stands chance of losing nike endorsements . Ufc is corrupt ,and dana is a punk

ummmm NO…barnett coming to the UFC comes down to how much they want to pay Josh compared to what Josh thinks hes worth and if he can pass a urine test when needed…simple as that…youre on a roll w/ completely wrong and misinformed comments today…

  • denny

Anderson silva is the most protected fighter in ufc history cause dana has a crush on him. Hope when dana has his ear cut off that they slip with knife and cut his tongue off

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=770998451 Thomas Abrams

most uninformed and ignorant comment ive seen today…how is silva protected? there isnt a fighter he in his division that he hasnt fought that he was ever supposed to…hes fought everyone in the division and then some…absolutely no truth to this statement…no proof to back up this claim…pure stupidity…

  • GoNoles

is jorge masvidal coming over or is that still an unknown?

  • http://twitter.com/D_A_M D.A.Marquez

The only champions that may have some challenges are Cain Velasquez and Bendo, all others will get crushed by the current champions for their respective weight divisions.
