by Damon Martin – MMAWeekly.com Two lightweights may be battling for their UFC careers in November as Gabe Ruediger will get another crack in the Octagon as he faces British fighter Paul Kelly at UFC 123 in Detroit.
The fight was confirmed to MMAWeekly.com by sources close to the fight on Tuesday, with bout agreements expected to be issued shortly.
Getting back to the UFC after a 4 year hiatus, Gabe Ruediger (17-6) stepped in on short notice to face Joe Lauzon at UFC 118 in Boston. It didn’t go so well for Ruediger.
Stumbling out of the gates early, Ruediger found himself submitted by Lauzon at just over 2 minutes into the first round. Vowing to come back stronger after UFC matchmaker Joe Silva promised him at least one more shot, Ruediger will get a full training camp to prepare for his November showdown at UFC 123.
For his part, Paul Kelly (10-3) has been a tough fighter for the UFC ever since he debuted in 2008. Picking up some big wins along the way, Kelly eventually dropped from welterweight to lightweight, but has had mixed results.
Going 2-2 over his last 4 fights, Kelly will look to keep his UFC career alive when he faces Ruediger in the undercard at UFC 123 in Detroit.
More fights for the UFC’s upcoming return to Detroit should be announced in the coming weeks.
