Roy-Nelson-UFC-146-weigh-478x270Leading up to his UFC 166: Velasquez vs. dos Santos 3 co-main event bout against Roy Nelson, Daniel Cormier filed a complaint with the Texas athletic commission about Nelson’s signature beard. The former Olympic wrestler requested that Nelson have to shave the beard, or at least trim it.

On Wednesday, the commission informed UFC Tonight that Nelson will not have to shave or trim his facial hair prior to Saturday’s event in Houston.

Cormier’s complaint cited Nelson potentially having an unfair advantage with the beard, especially when fighting in close quarters.

“Well, Roy and I have been going back and forth and kind of messing with me up top in my head and everything. So there’s something there with that beard, he has it for a reason, he likes having it so why not make him shave it and take that comfort zone away from him,” said Cormier on a recent media conference call.

Cormier’s complaint gained traction following UFC 165, which took place on Sept. 21 in Toronto. The Canadian commission made Pat Healy trim his beard prior to his fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Cormier recently admitted that the complaint was in part mental games with his rival.

“Yes, it’s kind of tactical and also I thought those guys in Canada looked nice, but man, everybody looked nice and clean and like professional athletes,” he said.

Love him or hate him, Nelson’s working his career well. Even his beard is making headlines.

Somebody explain how the beard could possibly give Roy an advantage.

Well its like if he gets you to the ground he can try to suffocate you with it. It could also be extra cushion on his face to take punches easier. Idk, i dont have a problem with it but if i was fighting him, i wouldnt want that gross rug rubbing up on me.

Maybe any leftover bacon grease in the beard will distract Cormier from the goal to get down to 205.

    • Big Tuna

It’s like sand paper which can cause a rash burn on opponents which is why there is no facial hair allowed in competitive wrestling and BJJ

Its not like Daniel Cormier cant grow his own big beard.

This kind of stuff really makes fighters look dumb. In the history of earth…has a fight…a battle…a war ever been won because of the size of a mans beard???? Balls maybe…but not a beard!!

I think Cormier was trying to get inside Nelsons head…like shaving his beard would some how demoralize him and give Cormier the advantage. But it failed…and now Cormier just looks like an idiot.

      It was just mind games.

        I know…but he failed miserably!!

Roy’s beard has already defeated Cormier
