The UFC has their first ever women’s champion in Ronda Rousey. The former Olympian will headline UFC 157 in Anaheim on Feb. 23 in her Octagon debut.

UFC president Dana White announced on Thursday that Rousey will face former Strikeforce and Invicta contender Liz Carmouche in the main event of the upcoming card in 2013.

“In the UFC, Feb. 23 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. (Ronda Rousey) will be fighting Liz Carmouche, and she is the main event,” said White.

Rousey signed with the UFC a few weeks ago, making her the first ever female fighter under contract with the promotion. Now she not only makes her UFC debut, but she headlines a pay-per-view card for her first fight in the Octagon.

“I think the women are here to stay and I want to prove it,” said Rousey.

Undefeated in her career, Rousey has been unstoppable thus far and looks to keep her streak alive when she debuts in the UFC in early 2013.

Facing Rousey will be the only lady who stepped up to the challenge, according to White, and that is former Strikeforce and Invicta contender Liz Carmouche.

“That’s who wanted to fight her. Believe me, people aren’t kicking the door down at Zuffa wanting to fight (Rousey),” White said about Carmouche.

A winner of two fights in a row, Carmouche will look to be the first person in MMA to hand Rousey a loss, while also taking over the UFC women’s bantamweight title.

UFC 157 goes down on Feb 23 from Anaheim, Calif., and airs live on pay-per-view.

Headline? Must be a weak card.

Yea seriously, the under card better be super stacked

      • Mark McDowall

Agreed. But you know how Dana White works…if the card does well its going to be down to Rousey being on the card. If it tanks its going to be because of the rest of the card.

dude that is when hendo vs machida and urijah fight, rousey put ahead? wtf. i think ufc thinks putting girls mma will make ufc mainstream or to get a wider audience

  • chuker

Is she good…yes should she headline a ppv absolutely not. Why not put it on free TV and build up womens mma. I may buy this card but because of hendo vs machida and faber vs menjivar should be entertaining. Rhonda should headline on Feul or the prelims especially against Liz carmouche.

    • Mark McDowall

Rousey/Cyborg absolutely on PPV…but a fight where they’ve already admitted Carmouche was the ONLY opponent they could find is not a great way to kick off WMMA in the UFC

      • chuker

agreed cyborg vs Rousey ppv worthy

Not an exciting fight for what should have been a historic first women’s fight in the UFC. Carmouche is not a threat, she will be arm barred within 1 round, easily. The UFC should have got Mcmann, or Coenen, or preferably cyborg. They could even have taken a risk on bjj blackbelt Sheila Bird, I mean, Rousey’s stand up hasn’t shown itself to be worthy of anything as of yet, and I’d like to see what she can do to Bird on the ground. I know it would not have been easy to get a girl to fight Ronda, but just like I thought when the UFC took on women’s mma, they get people to deal with it who know very little.

I think the reason Carmouche got the shot is 2 fold…A. She was supposedly the only fighter that wanted the fight…yet several fighters said they were not even offered the fight. B. I think they wanted to give her an easier opponent so that Dana can give everyone the “I told you how bad ass Rousey is” speech afterwards.

I like Rousey…but I think she is being given way to much exposure at the moment. Putting the first ever WMMA fight in the UFC as a main event on a PPV, against an opponent that we all see as a gimme just proves that Dana is thinking with the wrong head.

I don’t think it will happen…but what if Rousey looses? Then what…

  • I’ll be sure not to order that Dana white is a idiot

I like Rousey, but it’s too soon to headline a PPV. It takes two to headline, and there is little depth in women’s MMA. I’ll be curious to see their payoffs afterward. That could be interesting.

So its BS.. miesha wants to fight her again and has told the to zuffa.. shes made it very apparent.. again was never asked or approached or offered to fight her.. bs statement carmouche was the only one to step up.. there handing her carmouche so its almost a garuanted win for the poster girl..
