Ronda Rousey vs. Cris “Cyborg” Santos Close to Becoming a Reality?

Ronda Rousey - StrikeforceThere are a lot of fights that could happen in the world of women’s MMA, but none would be bigger than Strikeforce champion Ronda Rousey taking on former champ Cris “Cyborg” Santos.

The two fighters have had nothing but bad words for each other over the last year, and after Rousey’s last win over Sarah Kaufman she immediately called out the Brazilian to make the move down to 135lbs and face her in the cage.

Unfortunately, Santos has stated time and again that she can’t make the move down to 135lbs for health reasons, and Rousey doesn’t seem to want to budge on the issue.

Well, now it appears UFC President Dana White might be intervening in the situation after spending some time speaking to Rousey over the last few days while the two were both in Minnesota ahead of UFC on FX 5.

“I think we are,” White answered when asked if we were any closer to a Rousey vs. Cyborg super fight. “You’ve been seeing me hang around with Ronda a lot, so I’m working on it.”

Santos won’t be eligible to compete again until at least after Dec 17, 2012 when her suspension is up after testing positive for banned substances stemming from her last fight in Strikeforce.

At that time the only fight on the horizon seems to be a bout against Rousey, in what could be the biggest bout in women’s MMA history.

Rousey’s options aren’t quite as limited with former Olympic silver medalist Sara McMann making her Strikeforce debut against Liz Carmouche in November, and she could potentially face the winner of that fight next instead.

Still, a match-up against Cyborg would be the biggest fight for Rousey in terms of exposure and fan interest, but now it’s just a matter of making it happen.

Make this fight happen…and put it on the Columbus card in March. With the media attention and the Arnold going on the same weekend Nationwide Arena will be packed to the rafters

  • The truth

Better be in strikeforce…I’m not paying for a UFC when they already need to focus on expanding there new flyweight devision instead of focusing on Ronda Rousey.

  • The build up to this fight has been so entertaining. Dana knows this fight will be a big draw for the womens division. I hope they can come to terms and put this together.

  • If I’m Rousey, there is only one way I’m agreeing to this fight. And that’s if Santos agrees to being tested by VADA!!! That’s it. No fight if this doesn’t happen!!!

    • After Lance Armstrong, I wouldn’t bet on Ronda’s juiceless career either.

Cyborg is a man and will destroy the feminine Rousey in a one sided blast off. Rousey has never been hit in the face before and will get a Carano style beatdown from the dude Cyborg.

    • You clearly no nothing about MMA and the techniques involved.

Johnny boy:I am willing to bet $10,000 on Cyborg to win even up. Care to wager and bypass the bookies?

      • al57

I am willing to wager $10,000 on Cyborg care to bet knowledge man?

  • al57

Make the fight at 135lbs with stringent drug testing weekly. Cyborg is a lab created chemical steroid creation nothing more.

  • shakejunt

not sure this ends up being at 135. there is, however, the possibility that dana makes it a one-off match in the ufc.

  • al57

Rousey used to fight at 145lbs and will be destroyed by the man Cyborg in a total destruction at even 140lbs. Rousey used to fight at 145 and moved down to avoid Cyborg. Make it happen and shut this Rousey up forever and hurt her.Smash bones and break her pretty face up brutally. Finish this big mouth up.

  • Bugster

I can’t stand Rousy, she talks way too much. I hope Santos would slap her mouth a few times.

Ronda claims that Cyborg needs to prove something, and hence, should come down to 135. Not so, Cyborg’s reign in Women’s MMA has actually been more dominant and impressive than Ronda’s, hence Ronda needs this fight, for her own legacy and credibility. She hasn’t fought a striker w/ great JJ yet, and thats what awaits her in Cyborg.

  • al57

The betting line will open with Cyborg a 3-1 favorite at 140 lbs and above. If the fight is at 135 lbs possible even odds.

Dana said womans MMA would NEVER be in the UFC, he better not put this on a PPV card. I will smack the shine off his head if he does. Oh and Dana guess what, you have ZERO chance of banging Ronda, get off her jock old man.
