Ronda Rousey Reveals Her Toughest MMA Fight Thus Far, and It Wasn’t Miesha Tate

Ronda RouseySince transitioning to mixed martial arts from a traditional Judo background, Olympic Judo Bronze Medalist Ronda Rousey has been an unstoppable force. She made her professional fighting debut in March 2011, finishing her first seven fights by first-round armbar.

The 27-year-old female fighting phenom has only been taken further than the first round once in her 10-fight career. She’s walked through the competition. The only time she’s faced adversity in a fight was for a few seconds in her first UFC title defense against Liz Carmouche at UFC 157. Carmouche took her back and applied a neck crank. Seconds later, Rousey was out of danger and in a dominant position.

With such quick finishes, including a 16-second knockout of Alexis Davis in her last outing at UFC 175, it’s hard to determine who has posed the biggest threat to Rousey’s reign.

Asked who was her toughest MMA fight while attending UFC Fight Night 51 in Brazil, Rousey gave that distinction to fellow Olympic Medalist Sara McMann.

“I would say my strongest opponent has been Sara McMann. I think she was the most physically strong one,” she said. “If she hadn’t gotten knocked down by that liver strike in the very beginning, I think it would have been a much tougher fight.”

It took Rousey 1:06 to finish McMann. Only Miesha Tate has made it out of the first round with the reigning champion, but Rousey doesn’t consider the two fights against Tate as “tough.”

“A lot of people would say Miesha, but I was mostly just trying to beat her up before I finished her off. I wouldn’t really call that a tough fight since I out-struck her five-to-one,” said Rousey.

“I would say within the short period of time that I fought McMann, I took a lot more damage than I did with anybody else.”

    Fair. Next.

  • johnnywrong

B—h should shut the f— up and fight Cris already. So far beyond bored with all her crap.

    • Larry

Cyborg got the crap beat out of her in kick boxing by a woman that hadn’t fought in 3 years.

      • redseanation

That woman who hadn’t fought(in a kickboxing match) in 3 years would of killed RR in a kickboxing match. You sir are a moron. Please dismiss yourself from this convo. That kickboxing chick who you don’t even know her name (Jorina Barrs) was undefeated in 38 pro fights. Chick is a beast. Learn about the fight game before you speak. 3 years is a long time but she had mma fights as recent as 2013, so it isn’t like she was away from the fight game. Also if you watched that fight, Cyborg did much better than I expected considering her comp.
PS. I hate Cyroid but RR is becoming more annoying way quicker.

        • Nate “THE CHEAT” Marquardt

Cyborg got knocked down 5 times and only reason she lasted the entire fight is because she tried to turn it into a MMA fight and constantly went for the clinch when she was taking a beating.
Keep making excuses for the steroid cheat shows your true character. You probably defend Sonnen also

          • The Prognosticator

In all fairness, Baars was 35-0 and would’ve easily KO’d Rousey in R1 of that MuayThai fight.

          • earlsimmons

Sooo let me get this straight, you bash cyborg for fighting and losing to one of the best women kickboxers but RR has never faced her or any other top boxer/kickboxer and thats perfectly fine?!? Cmon brah you sound like a clown. If RR faced her she wouldnt have lasted the first round.

          • Gravedigger

Not really keep in mind RR won’t even strike with Cris… RR is much smarter then that and will take her arm… She is calculated fighter and follows her game plan. When she stands and bangs it is just to prove a point. RR has the tools to stop a fight. Also RR wouldn’t try to stand with the best female Kickboxer in the world that girl would have to learn ground game and fast..

          • redseanation

I am not making excuses for anyone, just saying Baars is a beast and RR would of gotten herself killed. That is all I meant. I can’t stand Cyborg but she gets a pass on that fight for surviving alone.

        • Don Lee

So much for Cyborg being the most feared striker on the planet. LOL

    • tcaster52

Cyborg ain’t gonna be nothin without the juice. RR will tear her apart.

      • earlsimmons

any evidence of this or just crap coming out of your mouth?

    • Maddawgmar

Tell Cris to drop the weight and come to the UFC… Two way street, kinda like if Paquiao really want the Mayweather fight he could tell his camp to make it happen. If Cyborg wants the fight she knows how to get that fight. It’s a two way street.

      • Nate “THE CHEAT” Marquardt

Mayweather ducked Pacman. You have it backwards by a mile

        • Maddawgmar

You got me wrong by a mile. Most people say Mayweather ducked Paquiao, others say the other way (didn’t Paquiao refuse Olympic drug testing?). My contention is if either fighter really wanted the fight, they would make it happen. It was an analogy on if Cyborg really wants this fight she knows how to get it.

  • David Gerald

The only fight she actually had to work in was Liz Carmouche. She barely broke a sweat against McMahon. SHe was supposed to be a tough fight BUT it didn’t look tough

  • BJJ_god

She is such a snobby bitch. Her and Dana know that all her fights are based on money and not skill. They make sure her opponents are of no threat so they can keep the money train flowing.

    • Nate “THE CHEAT” Marquardt

Saying Rousey doesn’t have skill shows exactly how stupid you really are

      • earlsimmons

and your comment has done nothing to persuade him differently. Congrats bro you sound like a democrat.

    • Gary Duveyoung

The sad part about that is the fact that the fans still fork out their hard earned money to watch her fight. I wouldn’t spend a dime for ANY of her fights.

  • put me in the sauna coach

wow she really can’t get over her hatred of Tate. Which I never really understood since Ronda has said much more offensive and way more offensive remarks. Obviously to be a great fighter you don’t have to have much class.

    • Lawdog1521

I think she’s just that way. She said before her coaching season on TUF that she was afraid people would view her negatively and she was right.

      • Lutek

That was before the broadcast but after the filming. She knew by then, however the production would portray her, she would look bad. She knew the camera would not be lying, and it didn’t.

    • Don Lee

Looked like an easy fight to me. When did you see Tate ever give her a problem? When has Tate showed class? Was it when she shoved her hand into Cat’s face as she was getting up after rd 1 of their fight? Or was it when she was yucking up with her BF after he elbowed Cat in the head?

  • burgerman7

cyborg by 1st round ko if she faces her! Rhonda knows it so does Egghead White.

  • Tony Ridgway

What about Liz Carmouche? I’d say what she did to Rousey’s neck would count as “tough.”

    • deepgrim

yes i think carmouche would have to be toughest in the ufc, the fight with tate in strikeforce was more competitive than the one in ufc

    • Don Lee

Other than that she really didn’t have any problem handling her.

  • Lawdog1521

This is an example of why Rousey is trash. She’ll never give credit to Tate because she hates her. Rousey is unable to divorce her personal feelings from her professional ones. From doing the double flip off after winning to comments like this, Rousey is a poor sport.

    • jimmychong

Blah blah blah…She’s the Champion. it did look like a right from McMann landed clean during their first exchange in the fight. Tate was a rag doll for all 5 rounds. Just the Truth, Tate will never fight Rousey again,

      • I am Aboo

All 5 rounds and that’s supposed to be truth? LOL

    • theq

Or maybe you’re just a Tate fanboy.

    • Don Lee

She dominated Tate even from her back.

    • itzgoindwn

Miesha??? Please…She sucks. She’s not that good. Tell you what, this Saturday’s fight will be a true test for tate. Ronda clearly dominated that fight. Poor sport to me is one who complains about a stoppage that saved her ass from getting more knees to her face. Do you research before talking shit about a fighter
