Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche Kick Off Historic Weekend For Women in Sports

Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche kick off a historic weekend for women in sports tonight, headlining UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

For the first time in UFC history, the Las Vegas-based fight promotion will feature a female fight. It’s the first UFC women’s title bout and the first time a female match-up headlines a UFC event.

Across the country in Daytona Beach, Danica Patrick made history by becoming the first female driver to capture a pole in NASCAR’s top division, the Sprint Cup Series, posting a lap of 196.434 mph around Daytona International Speedway. She will lead the 43-car field to the green flag on Sunday in “The Great American Race.”

The historical significance of this weekend for females hasn’t gone unnoticed by UFC president Dana White.

“It’s a really cool weekend because the first ever women’s fight in the UFC. These two are fighting and main eventing for a title and the Danica Patrick thing on Sunday, so it’s a pretty cool weekend for women,” said White at a question and answers session prior to the UFC 157 official weigh-ins on Friday.
