Former Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza will look to continue his path back to a title with an expected bout against Derek Brunson penciled in for the upcoming Aug 18 card in San Diego.
Sources close to the match-up confirmed to MMAWeekly.com that verbal agreements are in place for the middleweight showdown, although bout agreements have not been signed yet.
Ronald ‘Jacare’ Souza will look to take one more step towards a potential middleweight title shot when he returns in August following his last win in March.
Souza took out late replacement Bristol Marunde in March at the Strikeforce event in Ohio after his original opponent, who also happens to be his next opponent, was forced out of the fight after not passing the required eye tests from the state athletic commission.
Following his removal from the fight against Souza in March, Derek Brunson underwent LASIK surgery to repair his eyesight to avoid any further entanglements with the athletic commissions.
Unfortunately for Brunson it also came with some extended time off so he took a bout on short notice just last week to face former Ultimate Fighter winner Kendall Grove at ShoFights in the co-main event on the card.
Brunson came up on the wrong end of a split decision, but not without some controversy as more than a few people watching the show scored the bout for the North Carolina native. Be that as it may, Brunson is now ready to wash the bad taste of the first loss of his career out of his mouth and face Souza in August.
