Robert Whittaker will get a second opportunity to fight under the UFC banner in front of his home country fans when the Australian TUF: The Smashes winner faces Brian Melancon at UFC Fight Night 33 in Brisbane, Australia, on Dec. 7 (Dec. 6 in the United States).
The fight was announced by MMAKanvas.com on Thursday night and later confirmed by UFC officials.
Whittaker, who at just 22 is one of the exciting prospects in the UFC welterweight division, is coming off of a split decision loss to Court McGee in August, his first defeat in the UFC.
His opponent will be former Strikeforce fighter Brian Melancon, who suffered a submission loss to Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Fight Night: Condit vs. Kampmann 2. The 31-year-old Texan is 1-1 in the UFC.
The card will be headlined by a heavyweight clash between Mark Hunt and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva with James Te Huna taking on Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in the co-main event.
Tickets will go on sale Oct. 10 and are priced at $50, $95, $150, $250 and $350 and will be available online at Ticketek.com.au.
