Robbie Lawler vs. Matt Brown Headlines UFC on FOX 12 with Title Shot on the Line

Robbie Lawler vs Matt BrownSince returning to the UFC last February, Robbie Lawler has fought five times, and he’s not slowing down.

UFC president Dana White on Tuesday announced that Lawler will square off with Matt Brown in the UFC on FOX 12 main event on July 26 in Sacramento, Calif.

Not only is the bout already a Fight of the Year candidate in most pundits’ eyes, White said that the winner of the fight is guaranteed the next shot at UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks.

Lawler (23-10, 1 NC) is amidst an amazing career resurgence that has seen him win four of his last five fights in the Octagon. His only loss was via a narrow decision to Hendricks when the two fought to fill the vacancy left by former 170-pound kingpin Georges St-Pierre.

Once again making a quick return, Lawler is fresh off of a third-round stoppage of Jake Ellenberger at Saturday’s UFC 173 in Las Vegas.

Brown (19-11), like Lawler, is also experiencing the most impressive stretch of his career. Fresh off of a main event drubbing of Erick Silva, Brown has won his last seven fights.

While detractors point to Brown having not faced a Top 10 opponent during his current run, a convincing victory over Lawler would surely put such concerns to rest, and prove him worthy of a title shot.

UFC on FOX 12 also features a light heavyweight bout pitting Anthony Johnson against the returning Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

I like both guys but I think this one is Robbie’s. He has fought high levels of competion for many years. Should be a great fight.

    • robc

Perhaps but Brown has lost 11 times, 9 of which are by submission. Lawler has a single sub win in his entire career. The point being, Brown’s weakness in sub defence (which was much improved in the Silva fight) will not come into play here. Brown lost a split decision to Dong 6 years ago but otherwise has been tearing up standup guys. Lawler is the better guy on the feet but Brown has the better cardio. This is a 5 rounder, be very interesting to see how it plays out.

      • fan of both

precisely So that means he wants to stand with Lawler which i think is bad idea. Look what he did to Jake and Rory. Think Mike Brown is outclassed in this fight. Good to see UFC wanting Robbie to get the next shot

        • TheCerealKiller

Mike Brown stinks, but his brother Matt is pretty good.

  • Charles

Awesome fight. Two guys with solid chins, press forward style that look for the finish. This is a great matchup for a 5 rounder.

  • Shartnado2, the Sloppy One

Well it’s been a nice run Matt Brown but now youve run into the one guy in the division thats better than you at everything.

    • Wolf Ticket

Well, Brown is definitely the better can-crusher :)

  • MuayThaiFood

Should be an awesome fight. I don’t think it will go the distance and my money is on Lawler. Robbie’s killer instinct is going to be the X factor. Brown is durable but I see him getting hurt and Lawler….well…ruthless.

  • Simon Carmont

For the newbies to MMA this a Robbie Lawler win. But for those that know Matt Brown’s freak Cardio, he will out work and grind away at Lawler, smothering him and closing distance.

    • MuayThaiFood

Cardio won’t be that much of an advantage for Brown in this one. Especially if he’s out in 2 and Idon’t see Robbie being the hunted in this one.

    • Baller31

Newbies? For everyone who’s been watching since UFC 1, this is still a lawler win.

  • shakejunt

the matt brown train had to come to a stop at some point.

can’t wait to see what happens though. the betting lines are gonna be crazy wide in robbie’s favor.

    • uncle

Brown has been the underdog in all of his fights
      I’m rooting for him

      • shakejunt

and rightfully so. he’s been nearly finished in a few of the fights leading up to this.

  • Sir Thomas Price

Don’t count Brown out. I think he will take simply because he won’t back up which I believe Lawler might because it was the only thing that put him in the position of losing the Hendricks fight. I think Robbie only gets the win if he gets the KO(which is possible), but Matt has the same chance at getting a TKO as well as a good chance for a sub. If it comes down to a decision then due to his cardio and forward movement Brown takes it 9 out of 10 times.

    • fan of both

lawler is not getting Ko’d. Diaz was not taken seriously back when lawler made 0 money and had to work a job. Since then he has handled everything strikers have thrown at him. He even starched manhoef… ( which i know was heading toward a loss) but if manhoef couldn’t ko him Brown has no chance my friend. Besides brown has never been hit hard like this at all.

Robbie has 3 more fights than brown. But a laundry list of competitors. Only reason brown is on a tear is because he is taking low level fights ( with exception of Silva)

Hate to be so harsh but is clear UFC wanted Robbie to fight for title again. Just call i
      like it see it.

      • Sir Thomas Price

Well I don’t think Robbie will get KO’d either, I said TKO. I make that distinction because I don’t think Lawler would go out but I think Matt’s pressure could have a chance of throwing enough for the reff to stop it (when Robbie is gassed).
It’s like I said above though, If this is a five round fight then looking at what Robbie did against Hendricks then he either won’t be throwing with his power or throw big and not have the energy to keep the power shots going past the third.

        • fan of both

          i can appreciated that

      • lowlb

        Why give him Brown then?
He deserves a shot right now..

    • fan of both

Oh and if he chases lawler he will pay very dearly mark my words after a single flush shot he will back up. Look at any list on hardest hitters and lawler is top ten in the world. He makes other fighter hesitate (rory had 0 answer for lawler) and look sad. this is not middleweight people.
Unless someone holds him down they are in trouble.

      • Sir Thomas Price

Well I cant stand Rory so I can’t tell you how happy that fight made me, but I am looking at his fight with Hendricks. Robbie paced himself and didn’t throw with the power he could have because of it which is evident in the fact that he hit Hendricks so much without as much as I knockdown(at least I don’t remember one). I think Robbie will try to pace himself but Brown won’t let him which will give him his KO power for the first 2 rounds but afterwards I don’t think he will have the energy to throw like we all know he can.

        • fan of both

That may have to do with Johnny Hendricks have the best college wrestling credentials ever in ufc. (robbie always lost to people holding him down)

        • fan of both

I like Brown but I am thinking after taking so many low level fights this fight is a stylistic nightmare for him, A loss to Robbie may actually raise his ranking tbh.

        • natpaukar7

          damn good thought…

    • natpaukar7

plausible but I think you are definitely underestimating lawler…also…especially in a 3 rd fight Lawler has perfect cardio, the way he crumpled from body shots, I understand he may have been hurt, but lawler is relentless and smart, if he sees a hurt body he’s feasting on ribs all night then knocking him out when he’s done…although, as a headline this is likely a 5rd fight…I see Lawler takes it 7/10…opposite of what you said but not as wide of a gap

      • Sir Thomas Price

You’re right, I probably am underestimating Lawler and agree with a lot of what your saying. 3 rounds and Lawler has no problem but since it looks like its a 5 round fight then that is where I think Brown gets the big edge with decisions (the 9/10 was only for the fight going to a decision). As for odds on the total fight I think I’ll give your 7/10 but for Brown. The big things that make me think Brown is his cardio, clinch work, and his jj which I think is very underrated because of earlier in his career.

        • MuayThaiFood

Brown’s gas tank is good but if Lawler hurts him early it may equalize things later if he makes it out of early rounds. Brown seems to get hurt bad in a lot of fights and comes out of it. Robbie is a different animal imo though than the guys that have hurt Brown in the past and couldn’t finish him. He’s got power and he goes for the kill when be has guys hurt.

    • Cptmats

If Brown doesn’t back up he will go to sleep fast.

  • julian moran

    Lawler all day.

    • Gary Fredericks

I remember people saying that years ago when Nick Diaz fought Lawler.

      • TheCerealKiller

Any fight over three years old is completely irrelevant.

        • Gary Fredericks

How so? My point that underestimating a fighter is a very relevant and timeless fact.

          • Cereal Killer

Because that Lawler is not the same fighter he is today. Besides, anytime you say Nick Diaz, you’re automatically wrong.

          • Gary Fredericks

Why is it so hard for you to understand that I am not comparing any of the fighters mentioned in this thread? I have posted several time explaining that I am talking about the similar speculation of the fans between the two fights. Put the bong down. It IS harming your comprehension dude.

      • Darin

Congratulations on not only making an incredibly irrelevant point, but also bringing up Nick Diaz yet again ( a completely irrelevant fighter).

        • Gary Fredericks

Please see my posted response to Cereal Killer. I apologize that public school has failed you miserably.

      • julian moran

        Brown aint no Diaz.

        • Gary Fredericks

Your comment ain’t no relative to the point of my comment.

  • fan of both

Robbie with Money, proper training time and motivation is a monster to all strikers.
I hope matt has some tricks up his sleeve.
Only good thing is this will not hurt his ranking. Since he has fought near all unranked opponents.

  • Dragon Kid

Lawler is more well rounded than Brown. Matt Browns got no ground game and will get smashed.

    • uncle

Everybody that Brown fought, was more well rounded you said the same thing about Erick
Silva. and look what happened he can win
this… but its going to be tough battle

      • Dragon Kid

All those guys Brown fought weren’t championship calibre fighters, so it doesn’t mean squat if one journeyman fighter is fighting other journeyman fighters. Brown has never fought high level fighters whereas Robbie Lawler has.

        • Cptmats

Agreed, there is no substitute for Lawlers experience.
Silva had Brown hurt bad with Body shot’s if he was even half the finisher Lawler is Brown wouldn’t have made it out of the first.

    • TheCerealKiller

He stopped Erick from doing anything on his back. That shows some huge improvement!

      • Dragon Kid

So what, Jon Fitch did it too. But Brown got handled by Silva in the first round and showed signs of struggle during their battle.

    • Darin

Nobody puts on a win streak like Matt’s with “no (fill in the blank) game”. Brown isn’t as skilled as Lawler and will likely lose, but he can fight anywhere, he schooled Mike Swick on the ground.

      • Dragon Kid

Anyone can rack up a streak beating guys who aren’t top ten or not championship material. Mike Swick is a guy nobody cares about and will never win a world title. Guys like Brian Foster & Seth Baczynski tapped Brown out. Hell, Chris Lytle did it twice.

  • J

Robbie is Robbed a 2nd time, First IMO he won the title, and at least should have gotten a rematch. Now he destroys another and is forced to take on another just for a chance at a rematch. I am sure he is getting paid well but common… Skill wins fight, but there is always that 1%chance you might get caught and then what – start over after all of that work.

  • uncle

This is going to be a brutal

  • drkdisciple

Those title shot promises seem to change every time a new match up is announced. Last I remember Dana also promised the winner of Rory vs Woodley a title shot next. By next month he will probably also be promising Lombard a title shot and before the summer is over he will announce that if GSP comes back he is next in line for a title shot.

    • Darin

Great point. Woodley did get screwed on that one.

      • Cptmats

To be honest i though Woodley was on his way to losing against Condit and didn’t deserve a shot.

  • Gary Fredericks

This is a fight that truly makes sense and has star raising potential for both fighters written all over it. I don’t have to mention the fact it could be FOTN or FOTY material as well. Two on my favorite fighters currently fighting.

  • lowlb

Go Lawler! He’s making some money but the guy already deserves a title shot.. Hendricks barely won and Ellen sure didn’t win. He should be getting a title shot now. I guess it make sense to have Hendricks fight someone else first though..

Lawler handled Hendricks and Ellenberger, Brown has nothing Lawler hasn’t seen before, and Brown doesn’t have the power those other guys have.. ( Hendricks,Ellenberger)

    • Just-scrap-nation

I see this being a lot like the Cerrone vs Barboza fight. Everyone thinks it will be FOTY (which it could). Brown will push it early in the first, look good and then Lawler will land a shot and 15 seconds later the ref will save him. Brown needs to work on foot movement for this fight. Aggression and grit will only land him turtled up against the fence… I admire his fighting style but it won’t work on a fighter as technical as Robbie.

      • natpaukar7

good analysis, I don’t see it ending early though but for sure Brown has put his relentless foot forward as a determining factor in most fights, lawler has that foot, foot movement and more power to back it up so I see this as a War in which Lawler has more tools and just as much heart, it will come down to if Brown is willing to fight a unique fight

        • Just-scrap-nation

“If Brown is willing to fight a unique fight”… Spot on brother. He’ll have to come out looking like a fighter we’ve never seen before. It’s still going to be tough though. Lawler looks like a man possessed right now. He’ll be tough to knock off for anyone at this point in time. Hopefully Josh Thomson can get back on track. I felt he pulled it off against Bendo.

      • lowlb

yep, I think you’re right. Sadly I think Brown’s gonna get his butt kicked.

      • Sir Thomas Price

I think his footwork is more than what he needs for this one. Robbie is a badass boxer so he won’t mind staying in the pocket which is where Matt will shine because of his ridiculous clinch game.

      • The guest of guests

Couldn’t agree more with each word, but at the same time you can never underestimate the toughness of someone. I see the same thing happening that you mentioned but would not be too surprised to see Brown give Robbie a few problems with his tenacity should he make it to the later rounds.

    • Sir Thomas Price

The bottom line is that he didn’t win the fight and although it was a solid fight, it wasn’t hard fought enough to give a rematch until a few fights like they are doing.

If Lawler fights like he did against Hendricks then he won’t win and I think he will due to the fact that it is 5 rounds. But what Brown has is his aggression that will back up Robbie and right when Robbie hits the cage he will stay in the pocket (because he is a badass) but it will lead into Matt’s biggest strength which is his clinch game with a very diverse attack. On top of his clinch Brown has the gas tank and bjj game(to work from the bottom) that Neither Hendricks nor Ellenberger have.

      • Cptmats

” Brown has is his aggression that will back up Robbie”

Brown doesn’t have anything Lawler can’t eat like a sandwich ! Hendricks best left hand wasn’t even enough to make Lawler stop laughing at him !

  • Obi-Wan Granoli

WOW! THIS will be a war! Both of these guys are die-hards. And robbie lawler should be known as restless not ruthless, the dude never rests.

  • Darin

Lawler has to be a big favorite here, but Brown’s durability and tenacity will make it an entertaining fight.

Lawler has everything to lose and Brown has everything to win, makes for an interesting x-factor.

    • julian moran

They both have the same thing to win, a title shot.

  • Naustradumbass

My prediction is Matt brown shows off his seldom seen bbj in chokes Robbie out in the 3rd… In lil nog doesn’t make it to the fight n is replaced by Dana whites ex girlfriend Tito ortez..n

  • uncle

Matt Brown is a scrappy bastard you never count out

    • Ian Price

And he has the cardio to take out Lawler

      • Cptmats

        Says who ?
He’s never fought more than 3 Rounds.

  • jimmy777

Robbie will win, fight Hendricks and take the belt

  • julian moran

Lawler played it a bit safe with Hendricks and Ellenberger, as they were both wrestlers. Lawler will not have to worry about Brown’s takedown attempts, thus be able to go forward at full force, and Ko Brown in round 1.

    • Drock420

I did not see the Lawler Ellenberger fight, but you can’t ever count Matt Brown out of a fight!

  • j

I think danas pushing for lawler to be ww champ. Hope hendricks beats him again

  • Cameron Merryman

Damn this is going to be a crazy fight. I like both guys but what if Brown wins? Wow

  • taylor2008

I like both of these guys, but Lawler is going to KO Brown. Lawler will be too powerful and fast for Brown. Lawler will KO brown in the first rd.

  • envel707

    san jose not sac

  • envel707

the last 3 opponents robbie has faced where top ten maybe 4 i cant remember if kos was in top 10 at the time they fought, brown has yet to face someone in the top ten until now. Brown is a beast but one hard body shot and he cripples. Always has since he lost on TUF to amir sadolla, up to his last fight with silva.First rd tko watch for the liver shots that robbie will use.
