Two former champions with a penchant for knockouts will meet at UFC 148, as Rich Franklin squares up with Cung Le.
Verbal agreements are in place for the fight according to UFC officials.
It’s been over a year since former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin stepped foot in the Octagon due to shoulder surgery that sidelined the Cincinnati native.
Franklin was scheduled to meet Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 133 in Philadelphia last August, but suffered a shoulder injury that required surgery. He has been on the shelf for several months dealing with rehabilitation.
With his health returned, Franklin is anxious to get back to action, but he’ll have a tough test ahead of him in July.
It will also mark the return of Franklin to the middleweight division where he ruled as champion, and then left the division after a win over Travis Lutter in 2008.
Former Strikeforce champion Cung Le long dreamed of moving to the UFC and fighting on the biggest MMA stage in the world.
Le got his wish at UFC 139 in 2011. Despite coming up short in an epic battle with former Pride king Wanderlei Silva, the lifelong martial artist promised to return again to the Octagon.
He now has a date and an opponent and Le will not only look to bounce back from a loss, but he’ll try to do so against a former UFC champion.
Franklin vs. Le is the latest fight to be announced for the UFC 148 fight card, which will be headlined by Ultimate Fighter Live coaches Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber settling their rivalry once and for all.
