Let the stand-up war begin.

Two former champions with a penchant for knockouts will meet at UFC 148, as Rich Franklin squares up with Cung Le.

Verbal agreements are in place for the fight according to UFC officials.

It’s been over a year since former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin stepped foot in the Octagon due to shoulder surgery that sidelined the Cincinnati native.

Franklin was scheduled to meet Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 133 in Philadelphia last August, but suffered a shoulder injury that required surgery. He has been on the shelf for several months dealing with rehabilitation.

With his health returned, Franklin is anxious to get back to action, but he’ll have a tough test ahead of him in July.

It will also mark the return of Franklin to the middleweight division where he ruled as champion, and then left the division after a win over Travis Lutter in 2008.

Former Strikeforce champion Cung Le long dreamed of moving to the UFC and fighting on the biggest MMA stage in the world.

Le got his wish at UFC 139 in 2011. Despite coming up short in an epic battle with former Pride king Wanderlei Silva, the lifelong martial artist promised to return again to the Octagon.

He now has a date and an opponent and Le will not only look to bounce back from a loss, but he’ll try to do so against a former UFC champion.

Franklin vs. Le is the latest fight to be announced for the UFC 148 fight card, which will be headlined by Ultimate Fighter Live coaches Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber settling their rivalry once and for all.

im feeling some cung le ninje wompin action

  • This was an unexpected match-up. I like it though, should be a good one.

I have Rich Franklin by easy KO in this one. Cung Le is past his prime and will not be able to hang with the tougher competition in the UFC. Not taking anything away from what he has accomplished, I just do not see him taking out the much more well rounded Franklin.

    • Lesnardo

I agree. While both are past their primes, Franklin has more big name fights under his belt.

Koing Cung Le in the first round is not easy because of his speed and good stand up.

But I predict Franklin TKOing Cung Le in the second or third round after a stand up war.

  • Franklin wins via KO in the first round. Total domination. It’s a no brainer.

    • adam1848

I agree. Only way Franklin doesn’t have this in the bag is if he dies cutting weight.

    • Lesnardo

Not KO in the first. TKO in the second or third.

Cung is too fast and skilled for a first round KO.

I see a war in the first round. Then the momentum will shift to Franklin, who is more of an MMA fighter than Cung. Then I see Franklin TKOing Cung in the second or third round.

Remember 3-4 years ago when many as well as this website talked as if this guy was unstoppable cause he beat a way past his prime Frank Shamrock…ridiculous! I’m glad Scott Smith knocked him the f*** out and shut everyone up exaggerating how great Le was. Franklin’s past his peak, but he should win this fight.

I thought he was done at Middleweight.

This is actually a cool fight. Rich Franklin was always one of the greatest 185 pound fighters in the world. His only real losses came to Anderson Silva.

Best of luck to him. He was always one of my favorite fighters. Very tough guy with losses to (only) the greatest of fighters. 🙂

    • Lesnardo

Umm.. Franklin lost to Belfort via KO. And at 185, I am not sure if he could beat the new guys. If Anderson wasn’t there, I would love to see him compete at 185 since that weight class now has some good fighters.

      Franklin vs Chael
      Franklin vs Bisping
      Franklin vs Munoz
      Franklin vs Boetch

  • I was actually surprised that Cung Le decided to fight again after losing to Silva. I think he retires after this loss.

  • Towers66

Should be an exciting fight. I am going to go with Le winning this one with something fancy. I believe Franklin is a far better Martial Artist all around but my gut says Le.

  • Good name match-up and it should also be a good fight. I see this one going to decision. Franklin should take it if he doesn’t allow Le to keep him at distance with his kicks through the fight.

  • daddy250

i say double ko! cung le will kick franklin in the face whilefranklin is punching cung le in the face. it will be a good match up. i like both fighters and yes they are old and will probably not be champs anymore but a good fight is a good fight
