Ricardo Lamas vs Erik Koch at UFC on Fox 6It often takes a statement win to get noticed and earn a shot at a title in the UFC, and Ricardo Lamas did exactly that on Saturday night.

The former WEC lightweight moved down to 145lbs in 2011 and thus far is undefeated while picking up three wins over arguably 3 of the top five fighters in the division.

Lamas had already defeated Cub Swanson and Hatsu Hioki going into his fight at UFC on Fox 6, but the manner with which he dispatched of former top contender Erik Koch can only be described as impressive.

With a barrage of strikes on the ground, Lamas managed to make Koch’s face look like a balloon filled with red paint had just exploded on him. The devastating finish gave Lamas his 4th win at featherweight, and his third over top competition.

He’s making it clear now that following this latest victory, Lamas is targeting the winner of the UFC 156 main event fight between champion Jose Aldo and challenger Frankie Edgar.

“There’s a fight happening next weekend, I’m going to be there watching and I’d love to have the winner of that fight in the main event of Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar,” Lamas stated after his win over Koch.

With his latest win, Lamas has separated himself from the competition at 145lbs, and would almost seem like a lock at this point for a title shot. Nothing is guaranteed in the UFC however (just ask Johny Hendricks), but UFC President Dana White likes that he’s calling for the fight already.

“I like that he wants it,” White said about Lamas’ desire to fight for the belt.

Lamas most likely sits alongside fellow WEC veteran Chan Sung Jung better known as “The Korean Zombie” as the top contenders in the division currently. Lamas should still be far and away ahead in title contention right now due to Jung’s layoff due to injury, and he’s not expected back until almost mid-year.

    He earned it.

let’s be realistic, frankie (win or lose) already earned a rematch because … you know… he, like, gave rematches.

I think Lamas made a good argument that his hat will be in the top 5 of the division. This guy just gets better each time I see him fight.
