Anderson-Silva-UFC-126-Prefight_4686UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva has been fined $50,000 for skipping UFC 162 media obligations.

Silva was scheduled to meet with several media outlets – including newspapers, websites, and television and radio stations – on Tuesday, according to a USA Today Sports report. He instead passed on the meeting and instead flew home to Brazil.

“We had a full media day set up for him in Los Angeles, and he just decided he didn’t want to do it,” UFC president Dana White told USA Today Sports. “So he’s being fined $50,000.”

The media event was planned to help publicize UFC 162: Silva vs. Weidman with tickets going on-sale this Friday.

His opponent, Chris Weidman, has similar media obligations on Wednesday.

Although Nick Diaz was removed from the UFC 137 main event bout with Georges St-Pierre for missing media obligations, White told USA Today Sports that he didn’t anticipate taking similar action against Silva.

“Nick Diaz didn’t show up for the press conference,” White said. “This was just a smaller media day, but it’s still not acceptable, so we’re fining him $50,000.”

UFC 162 is slated for July 6 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Ed Soares, Silva’s manager, declined to comment on the situation when contacted by MMAWeekly.com.

LOL, screw Dana Douche. I hope he refuses the fine ,if he can? and holds out on the fight!

    • Lawdog1521

He signed a contract. Maybe $50,000 is worth it but don’t expect to get off with nothing done when you’re contractually obligated. Us grown ups think about such things.

      • kbroesq

I agree that Silva was wrong to not show up to these media obligations, but are we missing something here? 50k for missing one day of media when Silva, as far as we know, has had a flawless record of being a complete professional. I really think such a fine would only be justified if White had warned Silva or this was a pattern.

Yes, to all those who say that 50k is not a lot to Silva, that’s not the point. It’s a lot of money in general, and I just don’t see how it’s justified based only upon the facts in the story. At least call it ‘reimbursement’ instead of ‘fine.’ Even that might be harsh for a first time offense considering how much money Silva has brought to the UFC.

        • Sir_Roy

I get what you’re saying … but Silva wasted the time and money of many that day. 50K is probably not even adequate recompense. As a consumer, when you purchase something, and you don’t get your money’s worth or what you were assured, you would want recompense yes? Same goes here for the media time and UFC dime.

Very important that the UFC set a precedence and nip this crap in the bud. They’re saying even the p4p king Mr. Anderson Silva will not get away with this crap. Good for them.

    • Fightfankevin

Funny how someone sees Dana as a douche for expecting someone to do their job. A fighters job is more than showing up on fight night. Everyone gets down on Chael Sonnen for the trash talk but the guy sells his fights and does his very best to promote himself and the UFC brand.

  • Elegia

    Isn’t $50,000 like $5 to Anderson Silva?

    • urdooomb

no. $50k is $50k to Anderson.

      • MMAreality

No! 50k isn’t 50k to Anderson Silva other wise he would have been to the media obligation.

  • Triggerman99

Silva very likely doesn’t care about this. People want to be like “that’s what he gets for not doing his job! Serves him right!”, but he probably has no problem taking a 50k hit for something like this. He probably just had some stuff he had to do at home and was just like “I’ll probably get in trouble for this, but meh, who cares?”.

    • Dave Dunn

He’ll just tell Dana “Take it out of my winnings”

    • Supaman

rather than not caring about a possible fine or the media day…

what Andy is REALLY saying is that he doesn’t care about Weidman. If you’ve seen his other interview on youtube, he repeatedly referred to Weidman as a “kid.”

Basically, fighting Weidman doesn’t interest him b/c he knows beating Weidman won’t add much to his legacy. He realizes that he has a limited fights remaining in his career and wants the fights that have more value (ie. opponents w/ more name recognition / popularity)

  • bajafox

Same people on Silvas side are probably the same idiots crapping on Diaz when he skipped his, lol

    • MuayThaiFood

Anderson won’t upload a video to youtube whining about it or blaming it on his management not telling him. And he won’t test positive for a banned substance after the fight either.

      • Sir_Roy

        I lol’d.

      • http://twitter.com/EncoroEncuero encoro-encuero

        buuurn!

      • bajafox

It doesn’t make the same whiners about Diaz less of a hypocrite, lol

Either they both get the same treatment or you’re all just typical fanboys. Their actions afterwards has nothing to do with them missing their obligations in the first place.

        • MMAreality

I don’t think that there is a bigger DIaz man crush out there than the one that bajafox has for them. Please Nick or Nate send him a pair of your underpants, jockstrap, or something!

        • MuayThaiFood

Your point is lost on me. Maybe it’s because I’m not half baked and into my third round of ice cream and skittles. I only remember the whining coming from the Diaz camp, and if you read the article above you would see that Dana said it was a lesser offense than what Diaz did. But if you really believe what you say about equal treatment then Diaz should have been fired for testing for pot because Matt Riddle was let go for the same reason…..”hypocrite fanboy”.

  • RJ

Honestly, this was probably a previously thought out move. He gets just as much media exposure, if not more out of it, gets to keep the aloof super fighter persona going, and didn’t have make the appearance. He will make more in pr cred then 50k would have bought, him, hell we are talking about it now.

  • Nuk3r

Silvas heading getting to big with the fame ……LAME

    • urdooomb

Silva['s] head [is] getting [too] big with the fame.

dude, either you are uneducated or simply sad.

      • Cereal Killer

Or Engrish isn’t his first language.

  • feenom

The facts about this situation hasn’t been all layed out. It does look bad & costed Dana money that Silva missed. He might have had an emergency. This be Silva’s biggest fight to date. I don’t think he’s going to win this one.

    • urdooomb

it does not look bad. Dana is trying to make it look bad.

      Who cares?

      • Fightfankevin

Perhaps all of the people who took the time to schedule and show up for the interviews. Who cares right? Well If you are on this site you should. It’s how we get info on MMA.

    • Blahafox

Biggest fight to date. Not even close!!!

    • Lucas Freire

Biggest fight? Really? Bigger than a fight against on a win streak SF champion Bendo? Bigger than against Belfort? Bigger than Silva vs Sonnen 2?
      wut

  • http://www.facebook.com/christopher.l.piercy Christopher Lamont Piercy

He probably just wanted a break from it all. Sometimes you got to take time off for yourself and drop everything else.

  • Sgt. Pepper

    I wish I had $50K

    • http://www.mmamadman.com/ Chase Brian Beebe

      i make over 50k a year

      • scoston05

        Is that relevant?

      • El Gvapo

My flatmate’s sister makes $50k every month by staying at homeland using the Internet. If you want to find out how you can earn etc etc etc…

  • King_DG

looks like Silva isn’t taking Weidman seriously but $50k is peanuts to him LOL

    • blahafox

Why would he need to take Weidman serious. This is a fight that has no reason to happen. This one that I will be skipping.

      • King_DG

Because the 1st time he fought Chael, he didn’t take him seriously as well and almost got beat?

        • Lucas Freire

Well,Chael was on roids and is a much more seasoned fighter than Weidman. He also was the champion of WEC and unlike Weidman, who defeated an overhyped Munoz and a Maia out of title contention run,he came from wins over Okami and Marquardt.

  • Dcortes92

It’s already been cleared as to why Silva didn’t show up. There was a short article saying he wanted to spend time with his son.

  • Cereal Killer

One of the biggest stars in Brazil and he has a Nike contract. I don’t think this will hurt his dinner plans too much.

  • Blahafox

Its media to promote a fight that shouldn’t even happen. Weidman stands no chance. It is not even a fight that I want to watch let alone follow media coverage about.

  • Adam Vogt, North Yarmouth

$50,000 seems a tad steep to me. It’s not like he has a history of missing obligations, does he?

  • Alex Adams

Silva’s clearly using this ”time” to send a message to Dana White and the UFC. You want me to promote and talk to the media, do some PR…FINE! I want my 10 fights contract under my term….FINE? It’s just a way for him to say I want something, you want something lets make a deal! Contract negotiation seems in the news for months if not a year or 2…Silva now puts pressure that’s it! Right or wrong? But I think that the UFc need Silva mnore than Silva need the UFC.

    • Trevor

Are you high? Dana and the brothers are loaded financially in ways that Anderson will never know. He needs them more than they need him.

      • Alex Adams

UFC without the best P4P in the world. They lose 2 super fight? They lose a lot more than cold hard cash they lose credibility! Wich hurts even more.

  • pappy

Silva cant look weidman in eyes yet, still trying to find a way out of this fight cause he knows weidman gonna beat him

    • real

      Truth!!!!!!!!!!!!
