Dan Henderson vs. Rashad EvansUFC officials on Tuesday confirmed that interim bantamweight champion Renan Barão sustained an injury that would keep him out of his planned title defense against Eddie Wineland at UFC 161 on June 15.

A short time later, the promotion released an additional statement, noting that the previous co-main event bout between Rashad Evans and Dan Henderson would now serve as the new UFC 161 headliner.

Evans vs. Henderson will remain a three-round bout.

The UFC did not reveal details of Barão’s injury, although Tatame.com reported that he injured his right foot.

Henderson (29-9) was on target to finally score the UFC light heavyweight championship bout that he missed out on at UFC 151 due to injury, but had his plans derailed when he lost a split decision to Lyoto Machida at UFC 157.

Henderson had been on a four-fight winning streak prior to that loss, including victories over Shogun Rua and Fedor Emelianenko.

Evans (17-3-1) is a former UFC light heavyweight champion.

He rode a four-fight winning streak – weathering several setbacks due to injury – into a return shot at the belt at UFC 145, but fell short to champion Jon Jones, his former teammate. Evans followed that up with a flat performance against Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 156 over Super Bowl weekend.

Evans lost both fights by unanimous decision, entering the bout with Henderson in desperate need of a victory.

UFC 161 takes place on Saturday, June 15, at MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

“Evans vs. Henderson will remain a three-round bout.”

      • yellowmonkey

I wish it was a 5 rounder. Of course, I think all co-main events should already be 5 anyhow. Otherwise, what is the point of even calling them a main event.

        • Joe

Couldn’t be said better, if the point in a co main event is to protect an event as this fight has done why not already schedule it for 5?

      • Ian Price

        Should be a 5-rounder. It’s 3 weeks away!

    • bajafox

To date I don’t think they’ve changed a 3 round fight to 5 rounds after the contracts have been signed.

    • Cereal Killer

Why do people comment without reading the article??? It drives me insane! If you would have read two paragraphs, you would have had your answer. Jeez

      • Darin

What happened to Barao? Is Hendo-Evans the main event now?

        • Cereal Killer

Another troll, get out your repellant!

      • Lucas Freire

Why isn’t Barao going to fight?

  • Very important fight for both of these guys. To bad their fighting coming off losses. I hate that one of them has to lose and possibly retire or be set back even further from being in a number one contender position again. This fight should be awesome though.

    • Jason Decipher

Amen brother I feel exactly the same. When Hendo got a title shot I was curious to see how well he would do against Bones. Now that possibility is no more. I also hope this lights a fire underneath Rashad’s ass & if we see the old Rashad I believe he WILL defeat Hendo. I predict a very competitive fight that could be close. Due to both fighters desperately needing a W. It better be enough motivation for Rashad if not his head is definitely not in the game anymore

      • Lucas Freire

Due to both fighters desperately needing a win, I think we’ll see another Little nog vs Rashad.
If the iniciative doesn’t come from Hendo, this is gonna be a very boring fight.
So I hope Hendo catches Rashad with a big right hand, because if it doesn’t happen… It’s not gonna be a good fight.

      • I’m sure this will be an exciting fight. Rashad is upset with his recent loss and Hendo is frustrated with the Machida fight.

  • bajafox

Rashad will stay away from Hendo’s right hand and Hendo will probably not be able to take down Rashad. With it only being 3 rounds, I see it ending in a boring unanimous decision

  • goatpope

    “He road a four-fight winning streak” ROAD?…REALLY?

    • Darin

      Wass rong wit dat?

  • Cereal Killer

It’s really a messed up main event now. It’s not five rounds, it’s not a title fight, it’s not for a #1 contender, it’s not even a rising star. Good luck selling this PPV!

  • fsunoles10

i think 2 things when i hear or see hendo and those 2 things are the ko of bisping and chael on rogans podcast talking about every time he sees hendo he gives him so form of insult which is hendos way of saying wassup.

  • shakejunt

2 guys coming off not only losses, but awful fights. i get that it’s the most marketable fight left, but how is rashad gonna main after getting beat by the comain?

  • Mike mckinney

Hendo and rashad were going to sell more ppv’s anyhow. I don’t think they’re worried about that.

  • RealFedor

Is Hendo gonna get TRT approved? Is everybody going to f*** him like they did to Vitor? Or not, because he is American…

  • julian moran

    Henderson should win this easy.

  • Kris-tyahn

You cant ask 2 guys who’ve been training for 3 rounds, to fight a 5 round fight, 3 weeks until fight time, which would mean they have 2 weeks to basically double their cardio?!? LOL yeah, good luck with that! If the UFC would double their pay, I’m sure they probably would, but the UFC won’t. Besides, they signed to fight a 3 rounder, even if the UFC offered more cahs, I’m not sure they could take it. No idea how that would work, in regards to contract “change”.
