05-Rashad-Evans-UFC145-preThe spotlight has been shining intensely on the issue of an athlete’s sexuality lately, particularly in the mixed martial arts world.

Liz Carmouche, who recently challenge UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, grabbed headlines as the promotion’s first openly gay fighter. More recently, CFA fighter Fallon Fox has made news over the controversy swirling around her for competing as a transgender athlete. Fox was born a male, but several years ago underwent gender reassignment surgery and accompanying treatment to become a female.

The spotlight now has shifted slightly to the subject of gay marriage, and the support it is garnering from professional athletes, among them, former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans.

Minnesota Viking punter Chris Kluwe and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo recently submitted a Brief of Amici Curiae to the United States Supreme Court urging it to overturn bans on gay marriage. Evans, according to Outsports, signed the brief.

The brief basically outlines how sports and athletes have a strong influence, rightly or wrongly, on a large majority of the American population, and Kluwe and Ayanbadejo’s argument against bans on gay marriage.

“When we advance the idea that some people should be treated differently because of who they are, demeaned in public as lesser beings, not worthy of the same rights and benefits as others despite their actions as good citizens and neighbors, then we deny them equal protection under the laws,” they wrote. “America has walked this path before, and courageous people and the Court brought us to the right result. We urge the Court to repeat those actions here.”

Evans issued a statement to Outsports explaining his support of the brief and of gay marriage.

“I’m a UFC fighter, a macho-type sport,” he explained. “I am a heterosexual guy in a tough macho sport, which is exactly the reason I feel a duty to say I support gay marriage and gay rights.

“What people overlook is that is isn’t a sex issue, its a love issue. There’s no justifiable reason for trying to get in the way of two people who love each other.”

well rashad you was never my favorite but know you are not liked at all by me

    • Marine101

I bet Rashad is quite upset about losing a retarded bigot as a fan!

      • ItsNotOkToBeGay

Your piss weak and gutless, stand up for our rights, stop trying to defile the act of marraige

    • Oswald Cobblepott

This would be a non issue if people were educated to the fact that homosexuality is a genetic anomalie just like any other type of disorder and I hate using that word but it paints a better picture for all the knuckleheads!

      • DoubleLung81

“Genetic Anomalie!” Please tell me there is a cure for it too. So are we gonna start seeing infomercials like Autism, except you have 1 in 20 chance of having a “alternative lifestyle” baby?

        • Oswald Cobblepott

Dogs are born gay instances of homosexuality occur across all other mammals too, learn something in your life. I have three kids non are gay I can see that from an early age. If one were born gay I would see it early on too not find out later when they are adults. Gay is not a choice it is a birth right like being of color or female back when both were civil issues.

          • mmaHero

Sorry Oswald, but you are not born gay. It’s a moral choice.

          • MuayThaiFood

So, you are saying that you are attracted to men sexually which is why you like watching them roll around on the mat it’s just that you are making a moral choice. I respect you for your moral fortitude. I’ve never had to deal with that as I’ve always been attracted to women. I must be an anomaly.

          • mmaHero

Not sure where or how you got what you wrote from my statement? I’m simply stating that being gay is a choice that an individual makes, NOT because you’re born gay. A person chooses a moral stance on their “feeling” based how they they feel towards their own sexuality. Again, you are never born gay. No scientific/medical studies have ever proven this. People would like to theorized and believe this, but not proven. Bottom line; I believe in a book that has been around for thousands of years which has been tested, proven, tried and true…The Bible. I LOVE people who chooses to be gay, but I don’t agree with their choices. And just like everyone and Rashad’s opinion has been expressed in this forum, this is my creed.

  • DiazSUCKS

    What a joto

  • Matte

Parts of the MMA audience come off as moronic homofobical hillbillies.

I salute Rashad for this. I think it is very nice to stick up for peoples rights to be whomever they are.

    • paul blake

Sorry Matte but you’re the true moron. Why is it OK for someone to say the approve of homosexuality but not OK to say you don’t agree with it???? Why is it OK to try

      • hugo

Exactly, its funny how if you say you don’t agree with the homosexual agenda how the media and people like matte try to make you out to be pro violence against them. Does that mean matte is pro violence against people who don’t approve of his gay lifestyle?? Enough of this gay stuff already geeezzzzz

      • Mark McDowall

Agreed…you’ll never see an athlete coming out against something without being crusified. So why do they get praised for having a decision?

        • John Bunch

          Tim Tebow…nuff said…

      • John Bunch

Well…I can only say this…I don’t know of anyone ever being killed for saying they don’t agree with homosexuality, but there are plenty of cases of someone “looking” gay…even being gay…and being murdered for it. I used to live next to a park where people would troll for gay men, beating the crap out of them. I think plenty of people have spoken out against homosexuality throughout history, and continue to do so today with no fear of legal repercussions. Off my soap box…respect for Rashad.

      • fritz

actually, Matte’s right. Approve or don’t; America was founded on the concept of equality, and passing laws aimed at denying a group of citizens legal access to our system is 100% against that ideal, and America has a history of fighting back for the disenfranchised. It’s ok to have an opinion for or against gay marriage, (and this conversation isn’t about whether you can have an opinion or not) but it’s not ok to deny someone else’s rights based on an opinion. It’s be like saying “I’m a Libertarian, and being a Democrat is just wrong to me, so Democrats shouldn’t be allowed to vote.”

  • joe Washington

Is it just me or did the title yo this article say ” Rashid Evans comes out,…..” lol. That obviously was on purpose. I didn’t read where he actually admitted to being gay but obviously a straight guy with kids etc. Who is that passionate about gay issues is gay. Sad, really with the USA in such an economic meltdown that a small group has made homosexuals the number on topic of discussion. Sadder that the media tries to portray a sexual preference as an ethnic group such as blacks etc…

  • PhranktheTank

Really poor wording for the title

    • Cereal Killer

      I think it was perfect!

    • Milosc

      Indeed. Even manipulative

  • rUbEn

I do not support gay marriage… I do not agree with homosexuality… But I don’t hate ppl that do… I have gay friends and they’re cool ppl… I’m not a religious freak but it do believe in God and I don’t think what God wanted was 2 ppl of the same sex to be together… Gay rights… Cool they should have their rights.. Now marriage i don’t agree with.. A legal union so that they could share the same benefits as married couples well I wouldn’t be opposed to that…
To be honest i don’t think it’s “normal” and in don’t like the idea of young children being raised thinking it is Ok to experiment with other little kids like that..children learn what they see… If they grow older and decide to go that route on their own then fine… But I don’t like the idea of them being pushed in that direction… I think ppl go along with the media because the media says it’s Ok… Famous ppl r cool with it and younger ppl that don’t have the balls to form their own opinions go along with it… I feel like the media is really pushing this gay agenda on ppl hard and it’s everywhere… In every movie there’s something gay there even if it’s as a joke… I saw a video once of this dude on YouTube named yuri Alexander bezmenov – how to brainwash a nation and this kind of reminds me of it… The part about demoralizing a generation… If u have a few minutes check it out…

    • Oswald Cobblepott

      Blah blah blah your uneducated

      • TomMMA

        you’re*

      • TheTruth

Why don’t you read what you wrote you dumb ass

        Grow some balls

      • rUbEn

If wanting the best for my future children and everybody else’s makes me uneducated… Then Ok… A species is supposed to be born, grow, reproduce, and die… That keeps a species going and homosexuality doesn’t really contribute to that bro… N I’m cool with that if that’s what ppl want… Like I said homosexuality is there.. I’m not holding that against anyone… I know right from wrong and what’s what… I can form my own opinions without having to be influenced by others… Children can’t bro… Monkey see monkey do… We can’t hide homosexuality from them but we don’t have to force it on them…

I’m 26 and when I have kids i want the best for them and everybody else’s kids also…. I’m not trying to diss gay ppl but when someone has children they don’t wish for them to be gay.. They hope their children grow up, healthy, safe, in the future get married, have children and start a family.

Some might agree with me… Many won’t… But just like rashad evans has his opinion I have mine.

        • Oswald Cobblepott

Dogs are born gay instances of homosexuality occur across all other mammals too, learn something in your life. I have three kids non are gay I can see that from an early age. • mmaHero

I respect your opinion rUbEn. It’s sad to see people here ridicule your thoughts being expressed. You’ve got every right to say your opinion, just like Rashad and you shouldn’t have to be insulted.

    • Oswald Cobblepott

Dogs are born gay instances of homosexuality occur across all other mammals too, learn something in your life. I have three kids non are gay I can see that from an early age it’s just as if one were.

  • Mark McDowall

If your a good fighter…does it matter what or who you do in the bedroom? No…we pay to watch you fight…not to watch you play tummy sticks!!

This is a totally pointless article and Rashad is an idiot for even talking about it…he has now polarized alot of fans because of these comments. Carmouche even said that she was confused about the focus on her sexuality…

    • Neo

Yeah watching Carmouche walking out, I felt like vomiting. That chick is disgusting

      • Mark McDowall

And that is the sort of ignorant comment that makes articles like this gain traction…

  • Timothy Malone

I dont really care one way or the other about gay marriage but this reasoning bothers me:

“What people overlook is that is isn’t a sex issue, its a love issue.
There’s no justifiable reason for trying to get in the way of two people
    who love each other.”

Because if you accept this then you must accept incestuous love as well.

    • MuayThaiFood

Sorry, but incest is a crime in all 50 states. Hardly a comparison.

      • Timothy Malone

Gay marriage is illegal in some states as well. He is saying it shouldn’t be, and the logic he is using would mean neither should incest between consenting adults.

        • MuayThaiFood

Well, if you don’t care one way or the other why bring it up. His statement was not a general view, it was aimed only at the issue of gay marriage. Come on, you’re smarter than that. It sounds like you want to be neutral but you harbor some prejudice you don’t want to admit.

          • Alaindro

Timothy is right. If it is about love why isn’t incest allowed. There is no way the legal system can argue against it if homosexual marriage is permitted. And this my friends is why we had rules and systems in the first place, because now any and anything can and will be justified.

  • Ahmade Ahdoodi

Unlike Rashad Evans, I don’t support marriage at all……not for anybody — gay, straight, or other.

  • Greg Haislip

I used to be addicted to men, but 7 years ago Jesus set me FREE! (YouTube video)I made the switch from being married to my first wife by ditching her and our 2 sons to go into the gay life-choice. Today I am FREE, DELIVERED and married to a beautiful woman of God. I won’t go back! ALL HAIL KING JESUS!!!

    • mmaHero

Amen brother! Keep it strong in His name.

  • Jonathan

    gayyy

  • DamianCross

Am I the only football fan who absolutely hates the Minnesota Vikings but loves Chris Kluwe?

  • TomMMA

If anybody’s main reason for not allowing homosexual marriage is god then stop believing in fairy-tales and having so much aggression over something that probably doesn’t even effect or cause a concern in your daily life, you’re pathetic.

  • http://twitter.com/julianmoranart julian moran

Sounds like propaganda to get the “artsy” crowd to respect/open up to mma.

  • Neoconnected

My take…brilliant strategy on Rashad’s part to avoid being cut. Coming off a loss and one of his worst fights in memory, and considering the “Fitch” situation, Dana White is too PC now and corporate minded to ever cut the one guy in the UFC to come out in support of gay marriage. In essence, Rashad made himself immune from being cut anytime soon no matter how bad his future performances are…he could just use this “card” to stay in the UFC for the foreseeable future.

  • jeremy

I’m coming out in support of straight marriage ….

    • crapple

Sheep will attempt to defile the act of marriage

      • MuayThaiFood

What? Sheep want the right to marry too? Disgusting!!

  • MuayThaiFood

Most guys are attracted to women just like most people enjoy ice cream. If I’m sharing a pint of Ben and Jerry’s with my friends wouldn’t it be just weird and wrong if they didn’t like it? Hell no, it’s great….more for me! Who needs competition?

  • msin

this headline is terribly misleading. but good on rashad

    • ThatChickenShit

For being too much of a coward to say what he thinks and to just be a sheep and agree with everyone else.
Yes good on hijm for being a coward indeed

  • Skiman

Must say, I have lost a little respect for Rashad

Not that I had much to start with. Support gay marriage is a fad and a sick one at that. How can these people disrespect marriage like this and sleep at night? Just a disgrace

  • No Regrets

Phrasing anyone? That title needs to be changed.

  • phillopss niermotts

I think jon jones is gay

  • phillopss niermotts

I think jons j and rashsd had an affair

  • rapidfire

    it’s like this.
if you are against gay policy, then you are homophobic and closet homosexual who hates himself being a gay. that’s the reason why you are so against gays’ rights.they always pull that reverse psychology on you whenever you disagree with them. I’m not saying, i’m just saying.

  • Badguy

Well Evan’s the politician is missing a key point, they are not being treated differantly they are being treated based off the definiton of marriage nothing else. This isnt about what people believe in or treating people differantly or rights, its about the definition of marriage! Everything isnt about someones right. Change the definition of marriage then proceed forward but lets stop acting as if people want to surpress others rights. Most people believe in civil unions so partners can get the same benefits.
