Featherweight prospect Raphael Assuncao will face fellow WEC newcomer Jameel Massouh at WEC 40 on April 5 in Chicago. Bout agreements have been signed and both fighters are a go.
According to sources close to Massouh, he was confirmed on Saturday after a victory at an unnamed show in Russia. The 24-year-old fighter now carries an impressive 21-4 professional record, and boasts a four-fight win streak. He currently trains with UFC veteran Dave Strasser’s Freestyle Academy in Milwaukee, Wis.
The 27-year-old Assuncao was scouted by new promotion Bellator Fighting Championships, but instead signed with the Zuffa-owned organization in early February. He remained without an opponent until Massouh’s victory. In 13 professional appearances, he has slid only once, against former WEC contender Jeff Curran in 2006.
Curran, a Chicago area native, will also make an appearance on the Chicago card, against up-and-comer Joseph Benavidez.
Until this week, WEC 40 was scheduled to feature Miguel Torres’ second bantamweight title defense, against Brian Bowles, but an injury to Bowles brought Japanese newcomer Takeya Mizugaki into the fold.
