Rampage Jackson Puts Tito Ortiz Behind Him, Enters Bellator Light Heavyweight Tourney

Posted on by Ken Pishna and Jeff Cain

Quinton 'Rampage' JacksonBellator MMA on Monday announced that Quinton “Rampage” Jackson – once targeted to headline the promotion’s first pay-per-view event against fellow former UFC champion Tito Ortiz – will now join the company’s tournament format.

Jackson will make his first tournament appearance in several years when he joins the four-man light heavyweight tournament at Bellator 110. The event is slated for Spike TV to launch Bellator’s tenth season on Feb. 28 from the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut.

Rampage hasn’t fought in the tournament format since the Pride Middleweight Grand Prix in 2005.

“I’m very excited to do my first tournament in years,” said Rampage during a Monday conference call with select members of the media, including MMAWeekly.com.

Rampage’s opening round opponent will be Christian M’Pumbu. M’Pumbu is a former tournament finalist, but is coming off back-to-back losses, including losing his bid to wrest the title from Attila Vegh at Bellator 91.

Also included in the tournament is a pairing of former Strikeforce champion King Mo Lawal and Mikhail Zayats.

“I’m in it, and I’m in it to win it. I’m going to win this tournament by everybody going to sleep,” said Rampage, who has moved on from the idea of fighting Ortiz, after the UFC Hall of Famer backed out of their pay-per-view headlining bout last November, citing a neck injury.

“I’m not interested in [Tito Ortiz],” said Rampage.  “I’m worried about Christian M’Pumbu.”

I hope he wins the whole thing, along with Kongo. Bjorn said he didn’t want Bellator to be a UFC graveyard, but that’s exactly what is happening.

    • Timothy Malone

Why are people so mad about a couple UFC guys in Bellator? Wilson Reis and Zach Makovsky washed out of Bellator and they are in UFC so is UFC a Bellator graveyard? Here are Bellator’s top 20 guys:

      Vitaly Minakov
      Cheick Kongo
      Attila Vegh
      Emmanuel Newton
      Rampage Jackson
      Muhammed Lawal
      Alexander Shlemenko
      Brennan Ward
      Douglas Lima
      Rick Hawn
      Eddie Alvarez
      Michael Chandler
      Dave Jansen
      Will Brooks
      Daniel Straus
      Frodo Khasbulaev
      Patricio Freire
      Eduardo Dantas
      Rafael Silva
      Joe Warren

How does that read like a UFC graveyard?

        JOHN ALESSIO

        JOEY “THE MEXICUTIONER”
        MARCUS DAVIS
        TERRY ETIM
        ROB “THE SAINT” EMERSON
        KENDALL GROVE

But none of those guys except a couple were successful. They brought in UFC guys and had their own talent beat them. There is an obvious value in that.

          • Cereal Killer

That’s my point. If Bjorn wouldn’t have made the comment multiple times, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. They didn’t bring in successful guys, they brought in guys they cut.

      • Drock420

What about Andrey Koreshkov? I’m not sure if hes still in Bellator or not. Def a good fighter he only lost to the champ I believe.

  • Timothy Malone

Evidently they will do as many four-man tournaments as it takes to get one of their new stars to a title shot.

  • BobLemons

A four man tournament isn’t much of a tournament really. Where are the 8 man tourneys at? Bellator is losing what made it great..

    • Gary Fredericks

It is a big tournament for old and lazy Rampage.

  • Maddawgmar

Is it just me, or did the article make a big booboo? Wasn’t M’Pumbu champion when he fought Vegh? So He failed to retain his title, not wrestle it away from Vegh.

  • Woodrow

Please stop making Rampage your headliner, he’s an idiot! Develop your own fighters and market them. Surely you have better fighters than washed-up Rampage who could beat any wrestlers and was beat down by Jon Jones.

  • shakejunt

page might have a chance against mpumbu. i think zayats beats lawal though.

  • Shartnado

    Rampage likes Tito behind him?
