Posted on by MMAWeekly.com Staff

Rafael dos AnjosA lightweight match-up between Rafael dos Anjos and Rustam Khabilov has been verbally agreed to by the fighters for UFC 170, according to reports on Monday.

Sources familiar with the fight spoke with MMABoxing.ru, confirming the 155-pound tilt will take place on the Las Vegas card.

Dos Anjos (20-6) is on a hot streak of late in his UFC career, winning five in a row. In his most recent outing, dos Anjos took out top lightweight Donald Cerrone with a unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 27.

Khabilov (17-1) is undefeated since coming to the UFC one year ago. The Russian fighter’s last performance had him going the distance with former Strikeforce contender Jorge Masvidal, earning a unanimous-decision win for his efforts at UFC Fight for the Troops 3.

UFC 170 takes place on Feb. 22 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, and includes a pivotal light heavyweight fight between Alexander Gustafsson and Jimi Manuwa.

    I like this fight

Definitely thought Dos Anjos was gonna get a higher ranked fighter, but Khabilov is no joke, should be a good one.

I like this fight, but was hoping to see Dos Anjos vs Nate tbh. It could almost look like Rafael wants a low ranked opponent he (thinks he) can beat and then hopes to slide into a title fight based on winning streaks and injured co-contenders, cause this fight doesn’t make much sense strategically for him. Hope Tiger gets the upset.

The thing is Khabillov is a hyped prospect. He may not have big names on his record, but he’s getting some attention and I think this win could really put Dos Anjos on the Title Fight.
I know Nate Diaz is as tough as anyone can be on LW, but he’s 1-2 on the last fights, even though it’s against the old champ and the title contender, Dos Anjos doesn’t need to face someone making a return, but someone with a fresh streak just like his

You make good points, and title shot or not should be a great fight either way.

On the other hand, a loss to Khabilov will put him much further behind than a loss to Diaz

hard to see what they’re setting up here with this match-up. hopefully khabib-gil and nate-grant (though he doesn’t deserve it)

    • Maddawgmar

Khabib Nurmagomedov asked to fight Gil. So they might be working towards that. And Nate just fought, so maybe they might set him up with someone else down the line.

Rustam’s stand up is improving leaps and bound under Jackson-Winklejohn, but I have to think that his grappling is what he’ll need to use to win this fight. I’ll be rooting for Khabilov in this one.
