Before 2007 came to a close, the listeners of MMAWeekly Radio took time to call in and voice their opinions on a great number of subjects including their picks for “Fight of the Year” and “Fighter of the Year.”
While many battles could have taken home the honor of Fight of the Year, the fans of MMAWeekly Radio voted for the lightweight war in February between Takanori Gomi and Nick Diaz during Pride 33 in Las Vegas.
Despite the eventual outcome of a no decision handed down from the Nevada State Athletic Commission because of Nick Diaz’s positive drug test, the fans spoke and still believe it was worthy of receiving the honor of the best fight in all of 2007.
Jason from Nova Scotia called into the show and said, “Fight of the Year for me would have to be Gomi vs. Diaz. That was just six minutes and 46 seconds of madness. At the end with the gogoplata to finish it, that was crazy. I probably watched that fight more than any other.”
Many other fights received votes from the callers including bouts between Jon Koppenhaver and Jared Rollins, along with fights featuring Clay Guida vs. Roger Huerta and Clay Guida vs. Tyson Griffin.
Fighter of the Year was a bit more clear-cut as UFC middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva took the majority of the votes for his unbelievable run through the 185-pound weight class in 2007.
Silva reeled off wins over Travis Lutter, Nathan Marquardt and closed things out with another dominant performance over former champion Rich Franklin in their rematch in October.
The fans calling into the show also voiced their approval of the growth of the Ultimate Fighter as a major part of the expansion of mixed martial arts, while also speaking of the shock and fallout from the announcement of the resignation of UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture earlier this year.
