The Ultimate Fighting Championship proved reality shows are a viable medium for mixed martial arts, as “The Ultimate Fighter” has become a hit on Spike TV.

ProElite announced on Friday that, in conjunction with reality television guru Mark Burnett, it will produce a celebrity MMA themed series with Herschel Walker and Jose Canseco already on board to star in the show.

Mark Burnett, who produced and developed series such as “Survivor” and “The Contender,” will lead the way for development of the series, which currently does not have a name. It will focus on former athletes who will compete in MMA competitions.

“I am thrilled to collaborate with ProElite and look forward to working with an organization that is dedicated to the growth of a sport that is sure to become among the biggest in the world,” said Burnett. “I believe a primetime reality series involving world-class athletes from all sports competing in MMA will resonate with audiences far and wide as the sport garners popularity around the world.”

Former pro football player Herschel Walker and former Major League Baseball player Jose Canseco are already set to star in the series. Both have indicated that they have formidable backgrounds in martial arts.

Walker and Canseco are currently developing teams made up of former professional athletes to compete on the show. Each week the athletes will train with fighters from EliteXC, leading up to a finale that will include an MMA bout between two celebrity athletes from the season.

As of now, no timeline has been given for production of the series. When finished, it will be shopped for network television.
