During the UFC Fight Night: Gustafsson vs. Manuwa post-fight press conference on March 8 at the O2 Arena in London, UFC president Dana White announced that the promotion would be back in London at the same venue on Feb. 28, 2015. Those tentative plans have since changed.
UFC 184 has been scheduled for the Feb. 28 date in Los Angeles featuring two title fights. Middleweight champion Chris Weidman faces Vitor Belfort, while women’s bantamweight titleholder Ronda Rousey takes on Cat Zingano at the Staples Center. UFC Chief Global Officer Garry Cook appeared on Monday’s edition of the MMA Hour and said an event in London will be rescheduled for later in 2015.
“We’re going to move ourselves to another London date further down in the year,” Cook said. “So we had to make some changes, and as we always say with our business, it is subject to change, that’s just making sure the fans are taken care of. We don’t want to overdo it and make sure we get focused on that L.A. event at UFC 184 in Los Angeles.”
The first European UFC event to take place in 2015 is UFC on Fox 14: Gustafsson vs. Johnson. The event takes place on Jan. 24 at the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm. Stockholm native Alexander Gustafsson faces Anthony Johnson in the main event in a title eliminator bout. It will be the fourth time Sweden has played host to a UFC event and the second time a UFC fight card takes place in a stadium.
“It’s very important for Alexander Gustafsson, we wanted to place that one into that market, and we also have the LA show with Ronda on that card and with Belfort and Weidman on that card, and so to make some adjustments, we’re going to take ourselves out of that London date, and we’re going to move ourselves to another London date further down in the year,” said Cook.
