Pivotal Lightweight Bout Between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Pat Healy Added to UFC 165

Posted on by MMAWeekly.com Staff

Pat Healy-Strikeforce-0911-10098-478x270A pivotal lightweight bout has been added to the UFC 165: Jones vs. Gustafsson fight card slated for Sept. 21 in Toronto.

UFC officials on Sunday announced that Khabib Nurmagomedov will welcome Pat Healy back from suspension as part of the Canadian card.

Light heavyweight champion Jon Jones puts his belt on the line against Alexander Gustafsson in the UFC 165 main event at the Air Canada Centre.

Nurmagomedov (20-0) has been steadily proving himself in the Octagon, winning four consecutive fights over Kamal Shalorus, Gleison Tibau, Thiago Tavares, and most recently, Abel Trujillo.

Healy (29-16, 1 NC) scored the biggest victory of his career at UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen, submitting perennial UFC lightweight contender Jim Miller. The victory was overturned, however, when Healy failed his post-fight drug test. His test results were positive for marijuana.

Not only did he lose the fight, Healy also lost $130,000 in bonuses for Fight of the Night and Submission of the Night.

“I would like to start off by apologizing to the UFC, Jim Miller, the MMA community, it’s fans, my family, teammates and coaches for my positive testing for marijuana after my UFC 159 fight with Jim Miller,” Healy said in a statement after his drug test result became public.

This is a tough fight, but also an important one, for both fighters. Each is looking to establish himself as a contender in the division.

I think bad news for Healy. Nurmagomedov is gonna win a championship really soon IMO. Him and Rustam Khabilov are the biggest prospects in the UFC lightweight division.

idk… his wrestling is very nasty, but his striking needs alot of work. right now, he’s a bit too one-dimensional.

      • Maddawgmar

He has nothing but time to develop his striking. I think he has another fight should he win before a title shot. Healy’s striking is nothing to be in awe about and Khabib’s grappling is way better than Healy’s wrestling. I don’t see anyone in the lightweight division out grappling Khabib except maybe Rustam.

This may be true, but I do think his wrestling is good enough to bring the quality of a good striker down a bit as he would force strikers to adjust their stances too much and be worrying about takedown defence. This guy is only going to improve his striking more than he already has IMVHO.

good match up. risky fight for healy but a win over nurm would definitely re-solidify him as top 10.

Healy wins this fight. Nurmagomedov should have lost to Tibau and Healy is a way tougher fight than Tibau

Khabib is a problem… he whipped around Trujilio who was and still is a huge prospect ,and he did it with a broken wrist… Khabib will be a terror for Benson or Pettis.. i like Healy alot butthis is a bad match-up

Agreed, Nurmagomedov is going to be a problem for alot of people. He has a very different style than anyone else in the LW division right now. Either way this will be a great fight!

    • Gary Fredericks

One could probably make the argument that fighting Khabib is further punishment for his Mary Wanna infraction.

Nurmagomedov is a special talent. I see big things for this guy and like to see his fights!

great match up, lets hope Khabib makes weight and Healy stays clear of the magic herbs!
