Phil Davis vs. Lyoto Machida Slated for UFC 163

Posted on by MMAWeekly.com Staff

Lyoto Machida at UFC 104

A light heavyweight match-up between former titleholder Lyoto Machida and Phil Davis has been added to the UFC 163 fight card.

Portaldovaletudo.uol.com first reported the match-up on Monday and MMAWeekly.com has confirmed through sources close to the bout that Davis and Machida have verbally agreed to the fight.

Machida (19-3) is on a two-fight winning streak, defeating Ryan Bader and Dan Henderson in his last two outings.  A win over Davis could move Machida to the top of a short list of names to get a title shot.

Davis (11-1-1) is also riding a two-fight winning streak and has only been defeated by former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans.

UFC 163 takes places on August 3 at the HSBC Arena in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil and his headlined by a featherweight title bout between champion Jose Aldo and challenger Anthony Pettis.

Good match up. Great striker vs great wrestler. Mr wonderful has improved his striking, but is it enough? Can machida defend the takedown? Can’t wait to see it!

  • The Best Eva

Machida by KO Phil Davis is just awful to watch sometimes.

    • JudoMiguel

Machida is worse to watch than Phil Davis.. At least Davis comes forward, Machida Just counters, it’s fine to a certain point, then it becomes really boring, it’s crazy effective though

      • The Best Eva

I understand where your coming from but I really don’t like watching Davis fight he has no offense and looks for fence clinching and top control to stall out rounds.

Where at least Machida keeps guys off him and looks for finishes.

        • Baller31

They both bore me. I thought Henderson should have gotten the decision against Machida based on aggression…and I would much rather see Henderson/Jones than watch Machida get choked to death again.

          • Cptmats

“Henderson should have gotten the decision against Machida”
for chasing him around swinging at air ?

          • Baller31

I guess you thought Machida won…even though he ran away the whole fight, refused to engage and did absolutely zero damage?? IMO fighters should be going for a finish…always..not just trying to outpoint the other guy.

          • Marcus Miles

That fight sucked. At least fight to a decision. Im glad Machida isn’t getting a title fight after that Hendo fight. That fight was a title eliminator and thats how it panned out.

          • Cptmats

Just curious, are you a Diaz fan ? Cause you sound like one ! What kind of Idiot would stand and exchange with Henderson ? Or even think that finishing Hendo is possible ? Machida isn’t known for his grappling skills and i think we can both agree Machida isn’t going to KO Henderson. So what else should he have done ? I think Machida executed a solid game plan for an opponent like Henderson.

          • Baller31

I’m a fan of fighters who come to fight…and not just eke out pathetic decisions based on points. And of course Henderson can be finished….Machida’s own team mate did so in 2 rounds. I don’t think brawling is necessary, but great striking should be exciting not sleep inducing. Anderson Silva, Junior Dos Santos, Carlos Condit, Aldo, Pettis…all exciting strikers. Machida’s finishing rate is pathetic!!! More than half of his wins have been decisions.

          • relax

Machida has had 11 wins in the UFC, 5 came by KO or Submission. If we just look at his fights in which he started to be noticed and fight ‘bigger’ names – which you could argue started at sokoudjou (at the time sokoudjou was thought to be ok). Then Machida has had 8 wins with 5 being KOs or submissions. You need to get off the hate train. I completely understand thinking Machida did not earn a title shot with the Henderson win – but I can’t at all see how you think Henderson won that fight. He allowed Machida to dart in and out without cutting his angles. Because of this, Machida hit Henderson more than Henderson hit him, and he kicked and hit him in the face a few times also. Of course there is a reason Henderson didn’t rush in at Machida a lot – because it is not smart. Repeatedly rushing Machida is probably the worst thing you can do (unless you are really good). Conversely, standing in the pocket with Henderson is idiotic. What you saw is two smart fighters. Anyways you hate Machida and even if Baderizes or crane kicks Davis into oblivion you will still hate him. Enjoy.

          • The Best Eva

I would have preferred Henderson over Machida as well.

      • Cptmats

What Machida does is pure striking brilliance ! If that bores you you’re watching the wrong sport !

        • JudoMiguel

I bet Fitch and Okami bore you..
“If they bore you you’re watching the wrong sport!”
          That’s how stupid you sound

          • Baller31

I miss the Pride days where they got penalized for not keeping the action going…

          • Darin

            Eh…..WHAT?

          • muhaha

@ JudoMiguel I guess you like 2 men grinding and humping one another into submission and decision. In your mind that how they play the game. Lol!

Those guys bore me to death. Glad fitch is fighting somewhere else. As for okami he will be gone soon.

          • Baller31

I’m pretty sure JudoMiguel was being facetious to make a point to cptmats

          • JudoMiguel

I think you are watching to much porn dude

          • Cptmats

            I sound stupid bahahaha

            Once again !

What Machida does is pure striking brilliance ! If that bores you you’re watching the wrong sport !

If you want none stop action and finishes in every fight go watch some WWE or a Tough Man Comp.

            “That’s how stupid you sound”

LOL you’re entire comment make you sound stupid !

          • JudoMiguel

Dude, i just said that Fitch and Okami are two of my favourites and you comeback with
“If you want none stop action and finishes in every fight go watch some WWE or a Tough Man Comp.”
Maybe you should learn how to read

          • Cptmats

“Dude, i just said that Fitch and Okami are two of my favourites ”

            NO YOU DIDN’T
I don’t think anyone here knows WTF you said ! You don’t make alot of sense !

“Maybe you should learn how to read”

Maybe you should learn english !

        • Baller31

Was it pure striking brilliance when he got ko’d by Shogun? I thought so…on Rua’s end anyhow.

          • Cptmats

Don’t you have anything else to do troll !

          • Baller31

Don’t you have anything else to do but spout “pure MMA ignorance”?

          • Cptmats

            Don’t like being wrong ?
            Get used to it !

          • Baller31

Get used to being stupid. Oh, wait, you’ve had a lifetime for that.
Now get off the computer Lyoto and go practice your Bruce Lee imitation.

          • Cptmats

“Get used to being stupid. Oh, wait, you’ve had a lifetime for that.”
Says the guy who calls himself “Baller”

          • Baller31

Really? “Cptmats” is somehow better? And why in every response do you cut and paste what someone said to you…is it that hard to remember? Do everyone here a favor and try to argue intelligently and not just spout subjective opinions like they are facts.

          • Cptmats

“And why in every response do you cut and paste what someone said to you…is it that hard to remember?”

For an Idiot like you ? Yes ! And it will also help your simple mind to know exactly what fraze i am responding to…….cause it’s obviously not hard to confuse you !

          • Baller31

Simple mind? Maybe before you try, in your uneducated way, to insult someone else, you should learn the english language…the word you were looking for is “phrase” Your arguments are laughable….keep up the comedy! (but maybe go back to school first??)

      • Adam K Vogt

I love that Machida brings a unique and complex striking style to the sport. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the brawlers too, but there is room in MMA for more than one style of fighting. Not everybody needs to just stand and bang to be entertaining, in my opinion.

  • Mark McDowall

Awesome fight!! Can’t wait for this one!!

  • Chase Brian Beebe

I Think Machida has this one. Davis’s striking is still raw and machida has good hips to stuff his takedowns and counter phil. And with these 2 fighting each other gustafsson gets what he wants.

  • JudoMiguel

Machida by Decision.. I see him walking backwards, Landing his Stepping Knees and Stepping straights right hands and stuffing Davis Takedowns, cause those will be attempted from a mile away

  • Ashley Rodriguez

I was immensely disappointed after watching Henderson and machida, so hopefully this fight is more exciting. Machida by UD is my prediction.

  • zztoppppp

WOW, what a complete mismatch. Machida is going to embarrass Davis, even worse than he did Rashad, because Davis is a bad version of Rashad.

  • Cptmats

Starting to sound like Dana is trying to keep Machida and Jones from fighting again !
Machida was supposed to fight Jones after KOing Bader but somehow ended up having to fight Henderson first then after beating Henderson now has to fight Davis ?
Sounds like the striking lesson Machida gave Dana’s golden boy in the first round of their first fight gave Dana a little scare !

    • JudoMiguel

The fact that he got Dropped, and choked out in the Second round makes Dana fear Murder in the secon fight..
I don’t know if you noticed but whenever fighters adapted to Machida’s Style they defeated him pretty badly (Jones and Shogun)

      • Cptmats

“I don’t know if you noticed but whenever fighters adapted to Machida’s Style they defeated him pretty badly”

lol I don’t know if you noticed but the guys you listed are the only two to finish Machida and two of only three Guys to beat him in over a decade long MMA career and they are two of the top p4p fighter of all time ! BTW Machida’s record is a who’s who of MMA

    • shakejunt

bader is a good win, but it was expected of him. the fight with dan, on the other hand, was simply miserable to watch. something like that doesn’t get you a shot.

this is a tough match for phil. i’d like to think he has higher fight IQ than bader, but his striking is so behind. hopefully he can cause scrambles and end up on top.

      • Cptmats

“the fight with dan, on the other hand, was simply miserable to watch. something like that doesn’t get you a shot.”
        Worked for Johnny Hendricks !

        • shakejunt

not the same yo. machida has been on some mayweather type bicycle, hendricks is at least moving forward.

lyoto machida is 3-3 in his last 6, being put out cold twice, putting on simply terrible shows twice, and knocking out rudimentary strikers twice. you’re really gonna compare that to hendricks’ 6 fight win streak knocking off multiple top 5 contenders?

    • Baller31

Or…conspiracy theory alert….is Dana protecting Machida by not having him fight Shogun again?? Dude everything you say is just so f*&(%ng stupid!!!
Hey, I did like the lesson where Machida showed Jones how to choke his ass out)

  • http://www.CombatScienceMMA.com/ CombatScienceMMA

Finally another big fight for Davis. That loss to Rashad seemed to set him back in the division but he’s been looking sharp. I’am a big Machida fan, the guy is an animal and a scary fighter, people just don’t understand his style and think he’s boring but that’s a true martial artist. Phil Davis is athletic and would be deserving of a title shot or at least a #1 contender fight if he beats Machida in fashion. Everyones talking super fights for Jon Jones but the guy has plenty of competition in his division still. GSP and Silva held there titles for years.

    • Baller31

I don’t really see much competition for Jones in his division…he has dominated everyone so thoroughly. I would love to see him move to HW and then he would at least have Cain and JDS to contend with. If Cormier ever really moves down that may be interesting…although i would still favor Jones heavily. After the Machida/Henderson fight, I don’t ever want to see Machida in another title fight.

      • http://www.CombatScienceMMA.com/ CombatScienceMMA

We still have Gustaf and Glover Tex out there. And Phil Davis if he beats Machida. If Anderson Silva has been champ for all these years and is fighting a guy with only 9 fights then there is no reason why Jon Jones can’t continue taking on new guys who have not only been fighting top competition in their division but are veteran fighters with tons of experience. If Jones ever moved to HW I would love to see him fight Overeem.

    • Cptmats

I Agree about Machida ! I had him picking Henderson apart for three straight rounds 30-27

      • http://www.CombatScienceMMA.com/ CombatScienceMMA

Henderson is a legend. But he’s an olympic wrestler, and Lyoto is a high level life long martial artist who just had the skill to avoid taking any big shots and used his technique to win the fight. People forget Machida is a dangerous guy.

        • Cptmats

Machidas wrestling tends to get over looked. Most people seem to forget or don’t know about his sumo background which give him some very valuable skills in the clinch and on the fence.

          • http://www.CombatScienceMMA.com/ CombatScienceMMA

Indeed. He’s not a college wrestler of a Div I or II level but his judo and sumo backround have helped him against top level wrestlers. This will be a very big win for Davis if he can use athletic abilities to win this fight.

          • Baller31

Anyone who thinks Sumo is a skill that translates well to the UFC needs to take a history lesson and watch UFC 1

          • Cptmats

And anyone who thinks it isn’t is clueless !

Stop bothering me with your douchebagery ….Troll !

          • Baller31

again, see UFC 1 you moron. The one where the pro sumo wrestler (who began his sumo career 14 wins 0 losses…not some sumo rookie) got ko’d by a freaking karate guy who weighed less than half of what he did. Newbie! Oh wait, I forgot about the new trend where all the best MMa fighters are now incorporating sumo into their training…!! Oh, that’s right because they’re not. lol you’re a clueless jackass!

  • OverratedHippie

I’m cheering for Mr. Wonderful. Not because I dislike Machida and his counter strike tactics, or because Machida drinks his own urine. It’s also not because I dig Phil’s wrasslin skills or his behind the back kimura thing. It’s almost entirely because of them sexy hot pink shorts he wears to the cage.

  • james velasquez

    So much for title shot.
    Its better like this.
Give the shot to Gustafson or Texeira, or make them fight for a no.1 spot…

  • JDMMA

Much better, caus Machida doesn’t deserve a title shot after back paddling performance against Hendo

  • RacewalkAnd SprintChamps

This is going to be a close match with either of them
winning with decision going to the judges!

You will see Phil chasing Machida all over the octagon and Machida running away and stealing a jab or kick now and then! With this strategy, if Machida is just trying to win in front of the home crowd, it will be of no
use as he might not win at all with Phil Davies taking Machida down and using ground-n-pound or throwing volume punches standing. Thus, Machida will not get
a shot at the Light Heavyweight title. Instead after Alexander Gustafsson it will be Glover Teixeira who will get the title shot at John Jones’s LHW title!

Machida being an expert martial arts exponent, you should be aggressive like Bruce Lee (am a big fan of Bruce Lee since childhood) & Anthony Pettis just go forward menacingly, attack and finish your opponents and not dance and run away like a chicken! Machida, we are your fans. Give us an exciting fight and win like Vitor Belfort (aging or not, TRT use or not – we don’t care)!

  • dgs

Machida is easily one of the most dynamic fighters to ever compete in the sport. Not every fight he’s has been exciting, but that does nothing to diminish his importance to the sport. Whether the armchair warriors commenting here don’t like watching him fight is irrelevant. The fact is, Machida gives every fighter fits, and he is feared/respected by every one he’s fought.

Even a boring fight with Machida involved is more exciting to watch than a fight with a fighter like GSP (or Phil Davis for that matter, who I think Machida will beat handily).

I do believe Machida is currently the only LHW with the tools to beat Jones, and I believe he will be the first fighter in the UFC to do so when they meet again.

    • Baller31

First of all..you assume that everyone whom comments negatively on Machida is an ‘armchair warrior’….guess you don’t listen to fighter interviews, because there are a lot of UFC fighters who do not care for his style, to say the least. Dana White has been openly critical of Machida’s style as well. Machida is an accomplished mma fighter fighting in the biggest organization in the world. That said, he loses a lot of fans by playing it safe and not trying to finish a fight. Yes he has finished some fights, and if he stuns someone he moves in for the kill. But that’s few and far between. More than half of his victories are decisions. Jones has only 3 decisions in 18 victories. Silva has only 7 in 33. The Henderson fight was ridiculous…he ran the whole time..and did 0 damage to Henderson. That type of fight should not be tolerated. If you are afraid to get hit by Henderson…don’t fight him. This sport is about the fans…the ‘armchair athletes’ who pay the salaries of the fighters, and are therefore incredibly relevant. If you bore the fans with your fights, you will not last long. I would like to see the Dragon awake and fight like he did against Rashad and Thiago Silva. I guess we will see.
