With both Paulo Filho and Joe Doerksen, the latest additions to the WEC’s middleweight division, being ground specialists most people were a little surprised when Filho put Doerksen away in the first round with his fists.
It’s something that fans might expect more out of from the tough Brazilian. Although he fought all of his past fights in a ring, Filho said that he believes the caged enclosure that the WEC utilizes is more conducive to his style of fighting. In fact, in his post fight interview, Filho said that he likes fighting in a cage better than fighting in a ring.
The win, coming at the 4:07 mark, landed the WEC middleweight belt around Filho’s waist. The first such time in his career that he has been bestowed a title belt. He came close when he finished Kazuo Misaki in the Pride Grand Prix, but had to withdraw from the tournament due to injury. Misaki went on to take his place and win the belt.
The victory over Doerksen puts Filho’s professional mixed martial arts record at an unblemished 15-0 and has earned him the #2 middleweight ranking in the MMAWeekly World MMA Rankings.
Following his win, Filho, speaking through interpreter Ed Soares, spoke with the media about his victory over Doerksen, his Mike Tyson tattoo, who he would like to face in the cage, and whether or not he would ever fight his friend Anderson Silva.
