Undefeated prospect Kurt Holobaugh has received the call to step in on short notice and face Pat Healy next weekend at Strikeforce’s final show in Oklahoma City.
Sources close to the contest confirmed to MMAWeekly.com that verbal agreements are in place for the match-up, although bout agreements should follow along shortly. Healy confirmed on Twitter that he had received a bout agreement, but didn’t reveal the opponent by name.
Kurt Holobaugh comes to Strikeforce just over a week out from fight time to replace champion Gilbert Melendez who was unable to take the fight due to the healing time on his injured shoulder.
With a perfect 7-0 record in his fight career, Holobaugh comes to Strikeforce with a daunting task facing Healy on short notice, who has been the No. 1 contender in the division for most of the past year.
Holobaugh actually tried out for the Ultimate Fighter two seasons ago when bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and challenger Urijah Faber headed up the teams. Holobaugh made the final selection all the way to where he was flown to Las Vegas when the show was about to begin filming, but didn’t make the final cut for the 32 fighters cast.
Now Holobaugh has a chance to make an even bigger impression if he can get past Healy on Jan 12 in Strikeforce.
The bout was first announced by MMAJunkie.com on Wednesday, but Strikeforce has yet to announce the fight between Healy and Holobaugh, so it’s unknown at this time where the fight will air.
