ONE FC returns to Manila on April 24 with a card that will be headlined by one of the promotion’s biggest stars, as Ben Askren makes the first defense of his welterweight title against experienced Brazilian Luis Santos.

Santos (61-9-1) holds a black belt in BJJ, but is renowned for his striking prowess. He has a number of spectacular knockout wins to his name, most notably from an XFC International event last year when he knocked out an opponent with a front kick to the face.

Santos is coming off a first-round win over Bakhtiyar Abbasov at ONE FC: Battle of Lions with a brutal knee to the stomach doing the damage. He secured an immediate shot at the 170-pound belt.

After also finishing Abbasov in the opening round on his promotional debut, Askren went on to win the welterweight title by stopping inaugural champion Nobutatsu Suzuki in under 90 seconds at ONE FC: Reign of Champions.

how many more on his contract?

    • HG

      4 i think

      • shakejunt

damn so that’s at least a year. maybe mid 2016?

  • TheCerealKiller

Askren has won multiple titles, finished all 4 of his last 4 fights and is 14-0. Dana won’t give him a chance in the UFC.

McGregor hasn’t beaten a top 5 guy and has two losses. Title shot!

I understand the marketing side of it, but after Ben defends his One FC title, you gotta give him a chance.

Shinya Aoki is a dominating champion on ONE FC.
Remember how well he did in the west?
Askren would be facing better competition at Bellator.

      • TheCerealKiller

        Which he already did.

        • Lucas Freire

That’s what I’m trying to say. He was better of at Bellator. At least if what he wanted was visibility. There he may be getting a few bucks more, but’ll never make enough noise to make the UFC go after him.

both have poor striking, but ben doesn’t end up on bottom like aoki does. ben has already fought and beat western competition.

The problem looking to be that neither one of them look to want to work with each other. Ben even said in an interview that he is not sure if he want to be on the ufc roaster. It’s not easy to sign a guy that don’t want to work for you… It’s remind me of the Fedor case. And by the way he is not the only one that doing well outside the ufc. To me Vitaly Minakov is doing well in Bellator.

When will he be in the UFC?

    • JJDNB

When Dana stops bad mouthing him

  • onepunch

A worthy matchup and one i think will test Ben. Since joing One FC, Ben was previously labelled as a boring fighter but not when he fights in One FC. There are many tools available to him and not just lay and slide. Both fighters are now household names since competing in One FC. Their attendance and viewership is only second to the biggest promotion, making them the second largest mma promotion in the world. They are the most exciting mma organization. This is fully backup by the lack of matches going to a decision.

Financially, it’ll be wise of askren to stay at one fc and get paid a lot to fight nobodies. But if he wants a real challenge, Dana needs to sign him up. Good for the fans as well. He’ll have to take a huge pay cut.

  • Hendryx

Another Askren fight nobody on earth would pay real money to watch. This Askren kid is a wet-blanket.

  • Matt Sharrett

I like Askren. I know a lot of people don’t but the guy is Elite at what he does. Since he smashed Karl Amoussou he has been on fire. The UFC should give him a chance. He would surprise many people. He would be top 5 for sure.

    • JJDNB

i agree but no one should be surprised
