ONE Championship’s lightweight division is stacked with talented contenders and two of them will be going head to head with each other in Singapore on May 22. Lowen Tynanes and Kuat Khamitov confirmed independently via social media that a fight between them has been booked.
Tynanes (6-0) has not fought for ONE Championship for nearly a year due to a contract dispute with King of the Cage, which has now been resolved, but a third straight win for Asia’s biggest MMA organization would leave him in pole position for a title shot.
In the opposite corner will be promotional newcomer Khamitov (18-3-1), who is riding a six-fight win streak that has included victories in China and India. He will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow Kazakh Igor Svirid by eventually winning a title with ONE Championship.
Tynanes has registered wins against Vuyisile Colossa and Felipe Enomoto inside the ONE Championship cage. The 24-year-old Hawaiian also beat Eduard Folayang while fighting for another organization, but his career was put on hold due to the aforementioned contractual dispute with King of the Cage.
The fight is set for ONE: Warrior’s Quest, which is headlined by a lightweight title fight between reigning champion Shinya Aoki and Japanese challenger Koji Ando. So the winner of the bout between Khamitov and Tynanes could well be next in line to face the winner.
Another lightweight looking to work his way up the ladder is UFC and Bellator veteran Roger Huerta, who announced this week that he had put pen to paper on a new contract with ONE Championship and was hoping to be back in action soon.
