LIVERPOOL, England – The Liverpool Olympia played host to a stacked card featuring 17 fights, made up almost entirely of North West talent. Top of the bill was supposed to be the classic “Grappler vs. Striker” bout between relentless wrestler Ali Arish and heavy-handed OMMAC favorite Wayne Murrie.

What transpired was very much on-script during the first seven and half minutes of the encounter, with Arish continually scoring takedowns and slowing the pace to suit his style, avoiding any lengthy striking exchanges and racking up points on the judges scorecards.
He must have spotted an opening or got bored midway through the second stanza, however, as he unleashed the mother-of-all right hands and sent an unconscious Wayne Murrie crashing to the canvas. Arish tore up the script and marked himself out as the next challenger to incumbent champion John Maguire’s belt.

Chris Fishgold clearly had a plan in mind when engaging Danny Welsh. He wasted no time in landing a takedown before forcing his opponent to move around under strikes, opening up the opportunity to sink home a rear naked choke with ease.

A very tough and determined Artemis Lobov scored an upset over Uche Ihiewke by sinking in a fight ending triangle choke late in the third.

Interestingly enough, when the bout first got underway, Lobov looked to be in danger of getting knocked out due to his hands-by-the-waist striking stance and bizarre lateral movements. It proved not to be the case though as his style frustrated his highly regarded opponent into a takedown.

One of the most impressive overall performances of the night had to go to Richie Downes, who spent the best part of his bout in the clinch with opponent Dan James, firing away with brutally effective knees to the thigh and face. James took everything the Kaobon fighter dished out but ultimately had no answer to the ensuing assault.

Battered, bruised and bleeding, James was unable to answer the bell for the second round – handing victory to an elated Downes.
