A lightweight bout pitting former EliteXC champion K.J. Noons against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace Jorge Gurgel has tentatively been scheduled for the upcoming Strikeforce show on Aug. 21 in Houston.
The bout has been offered and verbally accepted, although no bout agreements have been issued according to sources speaking to MMAWeekly.com on Wednesday.
Noons (9-2) returned for his first fight in the United States in just over two years at Strikeforce Live L.A. on June 16, taking on Eddie Bravo disciple Conor Heun. What ensued was a three-round war that kept the Los Angeles crowd on their feet. In the end, Noons won a split decision.
The boxing and MMA professional has stated that he hopes to eventually make a run at both the lightweight and welterweight titles in Strikeforce, but is happy to do whatever the promotion asks of him until he gets those opportunities.
Stepping in to try and derail that plan will be Jorge Gurgel (13-6), fighting out Cincinnati, Ohio, by way of Brazil. The former UFC lightweight made the move to Strikeforce in 2009, and has since gone 1-1 in the promotion.
Training alongside longtime students Rich Franklin and Dustin Hazelett, Gurgel has also picked up his training with close friend Marcus Davis under the tutelage of famed trainer Mark DellaGrotte and his team at Sityodtong in Boston.
Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal is expected to make his first light heavyweight title defense on the Houston fight card, although no opponent has been named at this time.
