Nick Diaz Will Return to Fighting, Asks to Face Anderson Silva in the UFC

Posted on by Damon Martin

Nick Diaz UFC 129Nick Diaz is not done with fighting after all.

A tumultuous year that saw Diaz lose an interim UFC welterweight title fight followed by a year long suspension from the sport after a positive drug test for marijuana made the Stockton, Calif., native opt for retirement instead of continuing on with the fight game.

A few months later, however, according to his manager and trainer Cesar Gracie, Diaz is back in the gym, working hard and will return to fighting when his suspension is up.

“For the last couple of months I’ve watched Nick begin to frequent the gym more and more. He’s training harder now than he has for many of his fights. It was obvious that training and fighting is in his DNA. It is who he is,” Gracie wrote Friday on his website GracieFighter.com.

“This week we had a great talk and he made it clear to me that he is ready to get back to the cage. Nick Diaz will return.”

Gracie says that they are continuing to deal with the court system to hopefully overturn Diaz’s year long suspension, which would see him out until at least February 2013, and if they can get the result they long for, Diaz would love to return later this year.

“To address the NSAC suspension, I will say that we have appealed to the courts and if things go our way, it will be plausible that Nick could return as early as sometime at the end of this year,” said Gracie.

“For too long NSAC bureaucrats have acted with malicious incompetence towards the fighters. We will challenge them in court.”

Regardless of that pending action, Diaz is already looking ahead at potential opponents and says he only wants fights that “matter.”

Diaz’s dream fight would still be against UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, but he’s tied up in November with a title fight against Carlos Condit, the man that defeated Diaz back in February.

With that fight out of the realm of possibility, Diaz has turned his attention to the biggest fight he could think of, both literally and figuratively.

“As far as future opponents, Nick has stated that he would like to take fights ‘that matter.’ Since GSP will be fighting Condit, he has to look elsewhere. He will respectfully ask for a fight with Anderson Silva, a fighter he respects and would like to challenge,” Gracie wrote.

“Silva’s camp has been speaking of a fight with GSP, possibly even at a catch weight. Nick will take that fight in a minute, but has told me that should Silva decide not to drop at all, he will move up to 185 pounds to face the champ.”

Diaz has dabbled at higher weights before picking up wins over both Frank Shamrock and Scott Smith while competing in Strikeforce.

Silva’s managers have both been vocal at their desire for the UFC’s reigning middleweight champion to face only top competition or step into a “super fight” situation against somebody like St-Pierre.

According to Silva’s representatives, the Brazilian legend has little desire to face names like Chris Weidman or Tim Boetsch.

So is Nick Diaz a name that would entice Anderson Silva?

Gracie plans on meeting with UFC president Dana White next week to discuss the possibility.

“I will be meeting with Dana next Monday August 6th to discuss this and other issues,” said Gracie. “If you appreciate Nick’s fighting style, please let Dana know that you want Nick back ASAP.”

What has Diaz done to deserve a shot at Anderson Silva?

    • RonnieV

YEAH BABY!!! Diaz, yer my boy Blue!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002041189808 karlyhuey

I dont’ think Nick wants the belt he will fight in a catch weight. The belt will not be on the line. Does he deserve to fight Anderson, if the fans want to see it then YES. Is all about the money, nobody will buy PPV to see him fight Boetch and Weidman.

    • http://www.facebook.com/dan.main.526 danmain

Shot off his mouth. He wins 61.5% of his fights in the UFC.

    • williamfarris

Well he got beat by Condit, got busted for a banned substance, gives the sport a bad name, so sure, by all means give him a shot at the best fighter in the world, NOT!!!!! Where the hell does this guy get the balls to think he deserves anything. I can’t stand Bisbing, but if anybody deserves a shot at Silva, it’s him. Diaz should have to fight his way back in to a title shot. Sorry Nick, your brother, (whom I can’t stand either) deserves a title shot, so help him train for his shot, and stop taking away his time to shine.

    • cockrobin1

ill just come back after being suspension and fight Anderson Silva, yea hru doin twat, this guy thinks the fact he asks to fight Silva probably the best MMA around that this in some way makes him in the same league, wise up man your a joke a one trick pony, even Condit was to classy for you,TWAT!!

    • wilhaul

      Very good point and question.
While Diaz has his mouth full of piss and vinager towards anything “anti–Diaz”..where does he think he has the right to call out the top slot ?
Diaz is,and always be a low brow contender in any fight he plays in.
Regardless of any win,Diaz always needs to play the “poor boy” card..in that nothing matters, and nothing will.
I speculate that were Nick to win any belt,it wouldn’t amount to a hill of beans..why?
Because he’s just always so deserving of just so much more..and always will.
Nick Diaz is all about Nick Diaz ,the martyrdom
      of MMA..

    • kostagiann

      hes beaten everybody including condit

      • http://www.facebook.com/jim.mays.37 jimmays

your smokin the same stuff Diaz smokes, his UFC record is 7-5, most of his career was in strikeforce, a 7-5 record and coming off a loss does’nt warrent a shot at Silva, no matter what the PPV might bring

  • JD

How about Josh Koschek or Jon Fitch first?

  • Machterf5

This has got to be a joke. Just when I thought I couldn’t stand Nick Diaz or Cesar Gracie anymore, they pull crap like this.

  • http://www.facebook.com/corey.hutton.5 coreyhutton

Lends more credence to my theory that Nick Diaz is legally retarded.

    • RubeKegal

      HAHAHA pure gold

  • Drock420

This is a fight I would want to see. I really think it would be a great & exciting fight. I’m not saying Nick Diaz deserves the shot at Silva, but you gotta admit it would be an awesome fight! As much as I like Diaz I don’t like his chances against Silva, in other words Silva will win, but you can’t ever count any of the Diaz brothers out of a fight.

    • RonnieV

Anderson has never fought a boxer like Diaz, and they both are Black Belt BJJ. The Diaz haters should want this, they have been begging to see him get knocked out for the past five years. I too believe Silva would win, but it would be an entertaining fight, because Nick has an incredible chin. Diaz is not a small guy, I’ve met him when he wasn’t training for a fight, and he easily walks around at 200 lbs. Bisping in my mind deserves the next shot at Silva, but this fight would sell more tickets & PPV buys.

      • MrAdidas

I wouldnt mind seing Nick get KTFO, b/c I doubt Diaz could stand with Silva & take his strikes for 25 mins, but if Diaz could take those bombs for 2 or 3 rounds, I’d be shocked as hell & even think he could beat Silva if that ever happened, but I doubt it. I’d like to know if Diaz would try to take Silva down, and “IF” … “IF” he did, what would happen & could Diaz keep Silva down?!?

BTW: Do not compare Sonnen taking Silva down with Diaz taking Silva down “IF” Diaz could. Silva would have to worry about submissions, NOT GnP.

I also find it funny how Silva wants NOTHING to do with Jon Jones (someone his own size), but WANTS to fight a smaller GSP with a much shorter reach. What a joke/COWARD Silva is, keep figthing those smaller fighters Silva, it really shows your true colors. I think Silva would get a run for his money vs. Weidman. Weidman is a BIG MW & he has sick wrestling with serious power & good striking.

        • MaritalArtist

I’d love to see silva vs weidman. Gsp’s reach is only 1.5″ less than silva’s. But he’s 4″ shorter. At least he’s fast and has the best takedowns on the ww division.

        • sameames

Jon Jones could be a heavyweight. Anderson Silva fought at Welterweight early in his career. Jon Jones could never make middleweight. Why do people think they are the same size?

      • rfxgordy

mentioned this last week when people were saying who should get the next shot at anderson and a couple of people slated it but i agree with you ronnieV it would be an excellent match up and for me i see diaz knocking him out.

      • http://www.facebook.com/jim.mays.37 jimmays

yeah he has an incredible chin cuz marijuana was originally prescribed to help cancer patients with the pain, if it deadens pain he can take more punches…just my opinion

  • johnyfz450

i would really like to see nick back and im sure he is gonna make his way back to the ufc but i would rather see him fight gsp or condit as im sure we all would

  • Cptmats

Sry man but Diaz isn’t a boxer ! Yeh he can stand a trade with just about any one but it’s because he has an iron chin a great cardio. IMO his boxing is a little weak. BJ showed us that !

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001024036749 alexmartinez

Dude, he trains with pro boxers…

      • MrAdidas

Dude he doesnt have “great” boxing/stand up, he has a very effective style, punches in bunches. Like Cptmats said … “BJ showed us that” BJ being the smaller fighter with such a huge reach disavantage, he out boxed Diaz in the 1st round & then in true BJ form, his cardio faded. Had BJ actually worked on his cardio, he would have beaten Diaz, b/c he did win the 1st round vs. Diaz.

FYI: I’m no BJ Penn fan by any means, but I’m realistic.

        • B-rok

You don’t know what you are talking about. Diaz is actually a pro boxer and has stated many times that he’ll go back to that if the big fight in mma aren’t there for him. Am i the only one who actually follows this sport? BJ is my favorite fighter but he got out boxed and that is why he lost the fight. He won rd 1 because he took him down and took his back.

          • RonnieV

True, BJ landed 9 more punches in the first round & scored a takedown, but then again Diaz was more hesitant in the first round. In the second round Diaz landed a hundred more punches. Knock BJ’s cardio all you want, but if you get jabbed that many times in the face it will suck the wind out of anyone.

          • Guy In The Know

All the info you provided is false.

          • http://www.facebook.com/jim.mays.37 jimmays

Really?? Diaz is a pro boxer?? What’s his record?? Who has he fought…enlighten please as you are the only one that follows the sport

        • Jeff

Whats the difference between great stand up and “very effective style”? If you use your”very effective style” to GREAT EFFECT against your opponent, doesnt that kinda fall under the same category of GREAT STAND UP?

      • kylesmith

What are you talking about, “BJ showed us that?” Diaz absolutely OWNED BJ on the feet, turned his face into hamburger meat…

        • Glock45s

Whats up Kyle . Diaz would beat Silva no doubt and i would love t see that fight.I know you disagree but i do believe this.

    • B-rok
    • Jeff

Exactly how did BJ show that? By having his face beaten worse than its EVER been and being so upset he wanted to retire? BJ is a good boxer and Nick smoked him. If Nick isnt a boxer then what is he exactly? He does jits and rarely uses kicks so what is he doing with his hands the entire fight? BOXING or origami?

    • Glock45s

Who is this dummythats saying Diaz isnt a boxer. Its clear this idiot knows nothing about the fight game and Diaz is the perfect fighter to beat Silva. He has a great chin and can go all 5 rounds wih no problem. He also has a way of bringing guys into his kind of fight and i believe he could frustrate Silva and take his belt on any giving night.

      • macgrubber

        TROLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. Try harder plz

  • Jmoney

Diaz vs silva makes for a fun fight. Think that match up would sell a shit load of tickets and be an exciting fight standing or on the ground

    • MaritalArtist

      I agree!

    • Jeff

      Absolutely correct.

  • lowlb

I guess Diaz is still hi.

I think he can beat most of the 170 devision if he fights smart. His corner let him down against Conduit. He needs to solve that, Gracie may not be serving him well.

In reference to the request this article brings up, (Dana) I like Diaz and I want to see him fight and win. AS is a silly idea though.

Maybe Diaz vs. Sonnen that would be very entertaining.

    • MaritalArtist

Sonnen would put him on his back, end of story.

      • MaritalArtist

And no, Nick wouldn’t be able to submit him. He’s been practicing anti-silva submission defense pretty much everyday for the last 2 years.

      • Jeff

End of story as in he would put him on his back and pretty much get tapped or lay there TRYING to damage him and NOT succeed or would Nick somehow lose the fight getting laid on?

    • Jeff

why is it so silly? Hes never been ko’d. If anyone could do it its Silva. His BJJ is just as good as Silvas. If he gets KO’d then all the Diaz haters can rejoice. I think it makes ALOT of sense. Whats Chael gonna do to DIAZ? Seriously.? This would be closer than you think imo.

  • zacharydetal

The reality of the situation is this fight would sell more PPV’s than Silva vs Weidman or Boetsch. Silva and Bisping would sell alot bc of the european fan base, but Diaz is more entertaining. I hope they put Diaz/Silva together.

    • Jeff

      Totally agree.

  • take1

this fight wont happen. if it does as much as Nick drops his hands and invites punches, Anderson would destroy him quickly.

    • yellowmonkey

Agreed. That is why it would have entertainment value; Diaz would be taunting like a jackass and get KOed.

    • Jeff

Do you REALLY think he would do that against Silva? Everyone may think hes stupid but he isnt THAT foolish.

  • wiiliamstanley

RonnieV, Hell yeah I’m with you buddy. And Cptmats,Diaz won a decisive fight over penn with no controversy…… by out striking BJ. Bj’s boxing is the SH$T and still Penn’s face looked like ass after that fight. I respect your opinion but your the only Diaz hater i think to ever say Diaz can’t box. Thats why Joe Rogan rides his dick in every fight saying, “Diaz’s punches look like they have no power, but since he throws them with perfect technique, they hurt” ,or, ” Look at the angles Diaz uses when he throws his punches, wow!”. He knows perfect technique from being a good boxer and training boxing with pro’s like Ward. Now I’m not saying he will out strike Anderson by any means or that he even deserves a shot at him. But Diaz can box and bring a fight where ever it goes. Come on, It would make for a sick fight. I get it…… the guy can’t talk and he says dumb shit.

    • Cptmats

i agree Diaz won no question over bj, what i meant was Diaz clearly lost the first round, he was out boxed and got a quick bjj lesson from penn in the first round, and if BJ didn’t gas like he always does the whole fight would have been as one sised as the first round was. Sry dude but his boxing is a little weak. He uses it well because he is able to maintain a pace that very few fighters can and he doesn’t seem to be able to be hurt by a punch but his technique is a bit sloppy.

      • MaritalArtist

If he can avoid getting ko’ed in the first couple rounds, Nick just might be able to tire the old man out. Punches in bunches…. I bet Anderson’s never experienced that before!

It would tickle me pink to watch nick front Anderson and call him bitch or something.

      • B-rok

Diaz has some of the best boxing in mma. You have no clue what you are talking about. His angles and body shots are flawless. Just because he doesn’t have power doesn’t mean he’s not a good boxer. He’s technically a pro boxer with one bout.

    • MrAdidas

It’s not that Diaz “can’t” box, but he doesnt have “great” technique. He’s very effective with his punches in bunches, but he doesnt “hurt” you with bombs, he hurts you with so many small punches. Diaz has a few KO’s but I dont know any that are vs. any world class fighters, if anything I see that when Diaz has fought world class fighters, he’s lost most of those fights. Karo Parisyan, Diego Sanchez, Joe Riggs, Sean Sherk & Carlos Condit are all losses, he even lost to KJ Noons. His only win vs. a “world class fighter” is BJ Penn & thats not saying a whole lot since they fought @ WW. BJ Penn @ WW = below avg fighter – BJ Penn @ LW = top 5 in the world.

      • B-rok

Again you are clueless. Diaz is known around the sport as having some of the best technique in mma. He lost to kj noon because of a cut. oh and by the way kj noons is also a pro boxer. all those losses with the exception of condit was when he was young 21 or 22. Its not like condit ran through him. if anything under the new abc rules he probably would have won. The people on this board have no clue about mma.

  • samflchr

Anderson silva throws his hands down too it would probably be a weird fight be like him and Maia never know he will probably fight him Dana is nicks but buddy I’d watch it before weidman vs silva

  • http://www.twitter.com/uncanny390 uncanny390

Diaz is alot like Penn actually in that his only chance would be to use his grappling skills, but for whatever reason he would choose to box and be destroyed. No stand-up fighter has come remotely close to matching Anderson Silva. Only someone with great wrestling is going to beat him.

  • pooby

Lose to Condit – call out the best fighter in the world.

    Yeah, that makes perfect sense.

    • philmckracken

Exactly!!! But I would pay to see Silva beat him down. haha

  • zacharydetal

He called out the fighter that will bring the biggest pay day. It makes perfect sense, poopy

  • WarriorScholar

Some of you are crazy if you think Nick Diaz has great standup, sparring with Andre Ward doesn’t make him a world class boxer.Anderson Silva would destroy him standing up.

    • B-rok

you really have no clue. his foot work and use of angles makes him great. oh and the fact that he is a pro boxer and has stated many times that he’ll go to boxing if he leaves mma.

      • gnodeb

Nick stated that he would fight AS at MW. That doesn’t make him MW fighter. His record is 0-0 in UFC MW division. He has similar pro boxing record. He is not pro boxer and he is not good pro boxer for sure. He is trash talker who is bagging for some money right now…

      • gnodeb

      • Cptmats

Boxers make alot more money than mma fighters. If Diaz was good enough to box as a pro he would be doing it ! Truth is Diaz has great cardio and an Iron chin….thats about it, His boxing is weak ! Half the guy he fought in Strikeforce would have K.O.ed him if he didn’t such a solid chin.
And for those of you IDIOT ! talking about the BJ fight look at the pic of them sitting together after the fight. BJ ****** Diaz’s face as bad in the first round as Diaz did in the next two.

    • B-rok
      • RonnieV

        Great article, thanks for posting!

    • Glock45s

no way is Silvas standup better than Diaz, yea he gets off crazy shots onpeople but most are scared and they bring it on their selves.Diaz woldnt be scared to stand with him and he could take most of those crazy, lucky shots……Silva is a damn good fighter but the luckiest s.o.b ive ever seen in mma.I cant stand that girl talking man and cant wait to bring that belt back to the USA

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000468891939 liemianbresenio

If you think about it, if you really think about it… Arianny Celeste ACTUALLY has more of a claim to a championship fight against Anderson Silva than Nick Diaz.

    • The_Sheriff

I think Arianny would get pissed if you put her in the same weight class as Anderson Silva and I hear that chick is violent. Better watch yo self. LOL

  • wiiliamstanley

He held the belt at that class. If thats not a world class fighter then i don’t know what is. He also was good enough to get a title fight. But i do agree, 170 isn’t his strong point.

  • http://www.facebook.com/alex.antelo.3 alexantelo

Honestly, who else is there for Anderson Silva to fight at 185? lol

  • http://www.facebook.com/alex.antelo.3 alexantelo

Honestly, who else is there for Silva to fight at 185?

  • homerwilson

Diaz is a disgruntled mixed up moron. ban this piece of crap from MMA. He breaks the drug rules has zero personality and is a foul mouthed punk. The UFC is better than this turd Diaz.

    • RonnieV

I can’t argue with a few of your arguments, but remember that foul-mouthed, pot smoking punk has a HUGE fan base, and he always puts on entertaining fights! UFC wants him back asap, they need him back! The haters believe he’s a real life villian, his fans think he’s the most exciting fighter in the UFC.

  • Michael

i really really wanna see this fight i would love to see Diaz get his face pounded off

  • D-rail

Some ignorant ass clowns don’t get it even if it smacked them upside their dumb face. This would be huge!! It would sell a ton of PPV. Diaz has a better chance of standing than Chael any day, plus he would fight someone who wouldn’t strategically run around for 25mins. That kind of nonsense spawned Calgary’s embarrassing main event card u point freaks. Even Dana straight out said he was ashamed of that BORING SNOREFEST. People walked out of the bar that’s how horrible it was.

    • Jeff

All I can think is that its bcuz peoples disdain for Nick. I personally LOVE watching his fights because he comes to FIGHT. Granted his antics are kinda bogus and alot of times downright foolish BUT he puts on exciting fights and ENTERTAINS in this sport called the Ultimate FIGHTING Championship. Ive always wanted to see him fight Silva. I think he has a WAYYYYY better chance than GSP. It would dfinitely be more exciting. I remember people telling me there was no way he’d beat SHAMROCK. He basically toyed and destroyed FRANK. Im not sure if he could beat Silva but LETS FIND OUT! HE aint SCARED HOMEY!!! :-)

  • AdamBianski

This would be a great fight and a huge draw look at all the comments.

  • MaritalArtist

Let’s get it done, Dana! I wanna see nick taunt silva…lol!!!!!!

  • MaritalArtist

    Where you at, silva?!

  • maddawgmar

And while we are at it Frakie Edgar wants to fight JDS. Jones v Aldo. Faber v Condit. Fights sound fun, but It would be a one sided fight and someone would get KO’d quick.

  • http://theinstruction.com Theinstruction.com

Anyone that says this wouldnt be an amazing fight is simply not as big of an MMA fan as they would like to think or they dont follow it as well as they might think……. DANA WHITE!!! PLEASE!!!! you need to make this fight happen! I have seen UFC 1 all the way up to UFC 149! Nick with his amazing unorthadox fun as **** to watch and unique stand up skills(who by the has never been KO’d) -vs- the most talented, and dominant striker in MMA! THIS IS A MUST SEE EVENT! NO BRAINER! COME ON PEOPLE THIS WOULD BE A FREAKING SICK FIGHT!

  • B-rok

I would love to see this fight. Nicks boxing and grappling skill against Silvas power and quickness would be interesting. I do think Anderson would win, but not by knockout. Diaz hasn’t been knocked out in his career and his chin is ridiculous. But he cuts very easily so i think he would likely get opened up and the fight stopped. This would be similar to the KJ Noons fight. It would be interesting to see silvas counter striking against diaz because he is so aggressive.

    • WarriorScholar

He has been knocked out by a convicted rapist,Diaz is tailor made for Anderson to knockout. You really have no clue about fighting.

      • frumps

Nick is one of the best off of his back BJJ-wise – even newer MMA fans know this. Gogos, triangles, armbars, etc are very easy for Nick because of his flexibility.

Odds are that Silva will be expecting a stand-up fight, since Nick likes to bang on the feet. Let’s say Nick pulls guard intentionally and submits Silva at some point in this fight, which is certainly within the realm of possibility.

In that case, who would really have no clue about fighting, Mr. “WarriorScholar”?

        • WarriorScholar

I guess you don’t know Anderson trains with Jacare,Andre Galvao and i think Roger Gracie joined Blackhouse. You really think that would happen?

          • frumps

Is this not MMA? Expect the unexpected, young grasshoppah.

Everybody blows about Silva’s BJJ, but he’s really only had 3 submission victories IMHO, the other 3 he had were due to either Punches or Elbows, not really good evidence of hot BJJ.

Matt Serra knocked GSP out. Gonzaga high-kick KO’d CroCop. Hell, even Chonan caught your boy with a slick submission. So is it that crazy to think Diaz slaps an armbar on Silva?

If you answer yes, the conversation is over. I will then confirm your tard status.

    • Jeff

Actually, not sure if your aware but Diaz had his bones in his face shaved so he wouldnt get cut like he used to. He did it afte the first NOONS fight bcuz he was so pissed they stopped it over a cut.

  • gnodeb

I would like this circus to end. If he want’s to fight AS he need 3-5 wins in MW division. Or he need to take UFC WW title and keep it for 2-3 years. Then he can ask for super fight.
Seriously, trash talking is all he has for bargaining.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=731572142 robirwin

I don’t think he deserves a title shot, but I’d like to see the fight. If they can agree to a catchweight 3 round fight, I’d pay to see it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=623975398 eddieblanq

For a long time, I used to think Nick Diaz was a moron. Now I know its not just him : His camp doesn’t do him any favors. If he wants a catchweight fight against Silva, i’d pay to see Anderson bob and weave through Diaz’s wild flurries and throw a jab running back a la Forrest Griffin.
Of course, this would all depend on whether or not Anderson would actually want this fight. Which I say he probably doesn’t.

  • joeshine

Nick Diaz loses to an average Condit get suspended for drugs says dumb thing and now wants to come right back for a title shot against Silva? Amazing how dumb this Diaz is. Throw him out of the UFC. Give Nate Diaz a title shot. Nick Diaz is a turd.

    • sameames

An average Condit? Holy shit hate mixed with ignorance.

  • http://www.facebook.com/chuck.shipley.94 chuckshipley

You must be higher than Nick if you think Dana would trust Him in this big of a fight again.

  • TKD

    Very, very well said.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Gruvalicious Josee Angel

Love him or hate him… this would be a great fight!!!

  • marrk_us

Doesn’t matter whether it’s Anderson or GSP after his next fight. They’ve both been in the UFC long enough that the least they can do is take the trash (Diaz) out before they retire. How’s a New Years Eve UFC supercard sound?

    JDS vs Overeem
Silva or GSP vs Nick Diaz
winner of Henderson/Edgar vs Nate Diaz

Hold it in Cowboys Stadium, make tons of money, get rid of all the UFC’s trash in one night and start the new year fresh? They could charge whatever they want!

    • Guy In The Know

      Wishful thinking…… those fights are all headliners. Even though the fans deserve a card thats stacked. {after these latest ppv}

  • xenolord

This is all moot IMO. I can’t see a battle with the NSAC in court being resloved before his suspension is up anyway. By early 2013 GSP will have returned to the fold and the MW picture will be sorted out a bit as far as contenders go. If Weidman,Boetsch,Bisping, or Stann have yet to assert themselves as a clear #1 contender by then I’m sure Silva’s camp will be pushing hard for GSP. As chuckshipley said, I can’t see Dana trusting Diaz in a fight of that magnitude anyway after his GSP fiasco.

  • http://theinstruction.com Theinstruction.com

“i’d pay to see Anderson bob and weave through Diaz’s wild flurries and throw a jab running back a la Forrest Griffin.” eddieblanq

That proves my point. Comparing Forrest Griffin to Nick Diaz??? NOt even in the same ball park.

  • RonnieV

Silva IMO would win this fight, but he would do it the same way Condit did. Stick & move! Diaz has the best chin in MMA! Condit kicked him flush in the cheek, and I don’t think Diaz flinched. Diaz is not Forrest Griffin or Rich Franklin. He has ten times better boxing, stamina, BJJ, and a can take a punch. Silva would have his hands full with Diaz, but I think he would still win.

  • joeshine

Give Nate Diaz a chance and dump Nick and flush him. Nick is trouble. He couldn’t beat Condit who is average.

    • xenolord

OK Joe, you’ve said it twice now so I’ll bite. How in the world can you describe Condit, 10-1 since 2007,as AVERAGE? Do tell?

      • Jeff

I agree THAT IS a ridiculous statement.

  • Guy In The Know

Diaz is a boss. Let me remind the fanboys, that Diaz finished Gomie – When he was recognized as the best p4p fighter in the world. Hes’ never been finished and always comes to fight. Would be a matchup worth making.

    • Cptmats

Just so you know Gomie has never been recognized as being even close to the best p4p fighter. Best lightweight maybe, but that was when the ufc had no LW div. You’ve seen Gomie in the the UFC since then and he’s gone 3-2 so a win over him by Diaz isn’t really that impressive is it?
Its easy to win a belt and run up a good record and say “hes never been finished” when he has spent most of his career in the minor leauges

  • pooby

85 comments??!!!! Are you effing kidding me?

Diaz is NOT worth all this attention.

  • collideoverme

I hate to say it, as someone who isn’t a Diaz fan, this fight would sell. At this point for Silva, I can promise you, that’s all that matters. There will be no GSP vs Silva superfight. It just doesn’t make any sense. The only way it would is if GSP relinquished the Welterweight title and decided to move up permanently. If GSP moved up to fight for the title, what’s in it for Silva? Nothing. He couldn’t get the WW belt with winning. GSP would have both…you see my point?
Sonnen tried his best and is now moving up to 205. Boetsch and Weidman need to each other first. Book it and be done with it. That way when Diaz loses, he can go bye bye for good.

What in the hell happened. I’m away from the site for 3 weeks and it goes to hell. It’s like the bleacher report merged with mmaweekly. At least the commenters.
    -
We now have “you obviously know nothing about the sport” guy. Also, his younger brother is here, he’s “your so clueless” guy. And of course we have “punch stats are the end all, be all” guy.
    -
Mraddidas, and Cptmats, I feel for pain.
So many people look at the result of a fight, and then presume the guy who one is more “skilled.”
A great example of this not being true was the frank Mir vs. Shane carwin fight. Mir is much more skilled standing up, but he got knocked out just the same.
    -
The first round of the Diaz vs. penn fight showed a lot. Penn wasn’t the more skilled guy because he landed more strikes. It was the fact that every time Diaz tried to throw strikes Diaz got nailed. It wasn’t just that bj won the round, it was that penn picked Diaz apart.
Diaz however supposedly looked great when penn stood against the cage and covered up. Penn was tired and offered next to no resistance.
I would like to say one thing however. It is no knock to Diaz that he’s not as “skilled” as penn. an arguement can be made that penn is the most “skilled” guy the sport has ever had.
    -
I also still love the phantom “fan base” Diaz is suppose to have. He’s only had one fight in the UFC in which Diaz could be considered the biggest name, and that was a tittle fight with condit. Diaz may have some young people who have seen him free on tv, however there is no data to show that Diaz would be the cause for a large number of ppv buys.
Silva’s fights sell themself. People will buy fights with silva reguardless of opponent. Same goes with jones, and Gsp. They may not be mega events, but very few are.
    Sorry, way too much writing.

    • Guy In The Know

      YAWN… your ignorance bores me.

      • RonnieV

Mike Mc you used to get my respect, NO MAS HOMBRE! First off, Silva doesn’t sell fights, his opponent do!

        • MikeMc1983

Why has it changed? You’ve seen me say this same thing before. I’ve had the debates with you.
          -
I’m not sure if you your separating the guy “selling fights” with the guys “causing the fight to be bought.”
I believe chaels last free fight vs. munoz had less viewers than his ppv fight vs. silva. Who knows, maybe your right. Maybe everyone bought silva vs. okami because the wanted to see okami fight…
          -
Put the joint down and think. Diaz hasn’t been the “big name” on any card in the UFC. However, an arguement could be made that he was equal/bigger than condit. However, it’s not as if that ppv had big numbers. It was right there with all of the other ppv’s with other poor drawing fighters.

    • B-rok

bleacher report is the only site they will let me post. There is a great interview with freddie roach, where he ranks the boxers in mma. Diaz is three on that list. You can hate diaz all you want but the only people that matter know how good he is. Having good cardio is a skill. Just like having heart or good instincts. So when it cones down to it diaz was/is the more skilled fighter.

    • rfxgordy

      agreed MikeMc1983

  • WarriorScholar

Diaz fanboys you guys are retarded,if he can’t win the title at 170 what in the hell makes you think he has a chance at 185????

  • adriana

The fact that there are so many posts and so many strong opinions tells us something- love him or hate him, we need Nick Diaz! He makes the sport more entertaining and enjoyable. Yes, he is a bit mouthy, but there is no denying that he is very talented. AND there is a strong possibility he could beat Silva.

Other fighters at mw have called Silva out, but he has not shown any interest. It appears as though this is a fight he would consider taking. Is it because it will generate buzz and sell tickets? Is it because he doesn’t have to move up to lhw? Does he think he will absolutely beat Diaz? Do we really care about why?

There are so many reasons to want to see this match up. And other than the few “he’s trash/cheap shot” comments, most of the above posts show intelligent discussion and insight. Is Diaz an every man’s hero? a trash-talking villain? an over-hyped scrapper who will finally get KO’ed? a super-skilled fighter who will finally unseat Silva? We can and do make arguments for all of the above. But this is exactly why we NEED this fight!! Don’t we all want to know???

    • http://www.facebook.com/dan.main.526 danmain

8 and 5 in UFC? And he’s talented?

      • adriana

He is definitely talented! Rewatch his fights! and dude: gogoplata! Need I say more?

  • rfxgordy

little annoyed mentioned this as a possible match up last week nobody cared for it now that nick diaz has openly stated he’d like to fight him people are all over it just saying.

  • MikeMc1983

Ceaser Gracie must have been educated as well as nick Diaz. Lol j/k
    His quote.

“For too long NSAC bureaucrats have acted with malicious incompetence towards the fighters. We will challenge them in court.”
    -
That quote does not make sense. The nsac can’t be both malicious and incompetent. If they’re incompetent then they don’t know what they’re doing. Hence, they can’t be malicious.
    -
I wish someone would ask him what he means. If he believes they have a grudge, it would be interesting to know why he thinks so.

  • javiersepulveda

Obviously Diaz vs. Silva is a fight most people would buy, but you can’t just give Diaz the fight ( that he doesn’t deserve ) just because people would watch it. Hell I would pay to watch mighty mouse vs JDS, there not going to make that happen.

  • Mario

    YES!

Now that’s a fight (I’ve) dreamed of personally. It would be amazing to witness!

    Anderson Silva vs. Nick Diaz

God I hope it happens someday, somehow :)

  • RonnieV

100+ comments – MMAWeekly loves any news surrounding Nick Diaz!

  • Booker T

    109 comments…….REALLY!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/dan.main.526 danmain

Hey, don’t forget Nick is 8 and 5 in the UFC with a win % of 61.5. Whats he got to lose. Big paycheck and only having to be hit one time. He would be making like $1,000,000 per minute.

  • RonnieV

Nick is 1-1 in the UFC in the last five years! If you think Diaz will get knocked out in one punch, you need to watch more of his fights, instead of studying his Sherdog profile page.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mark.mcdowall.14 Beaver

The ONLY reason Diaz wants this fight is for the paycheck it will bring…can’t argue with him going for the big paycheck fights…but you get offered a title fight against GSP and blow it because you have “anxiety”, then win against a past it BJ Penn, then fight condit and loose, get suspended for being a pothead and then expect a fight against the #1 fighter in the world? Must be growing some god stuff out in Stockton…

Silva has better striking and a reach advantage over Diaz. If you think Diaz’s overly stiff boxing will beat Silva your retarded.

Silva and Diaz are both black belts in BJJ…but not all black belts are created equal. Ceaser is a gracie like 2 or 3 brances down the tree…and lets not forget his storied MMA career. Diaz is good on his back…but Silva is GREAT.

If he’s fighting for the paycheck then more power too him…but it wont happen.

    I do like the Diaz/Sonnen idea though…

  • http://www.facebook.com/wilone2 williamhall

    Poor Nick.

Nick Diaz is all about Nick Diaz ,the martyrdom
    of MMA..

  • kostagiann

i cant stand gracie or diaz but he is a better fighter than silva, love to see that fight

  • Spartacus

Cmon….Really?? People forget quickly what Silva did to Leben who at the time had the best chin in UFC. He put him to sleep. He doesn’t dodge people he just wants someone who can challenge him. Weidman needs to do much more to get a shot…at least two more wins but the problem being that there is no one to face him right now who has earned it. I would have preferred Hendo to get the chance to face him again. Nick would be slightly more retarded if he fought Anderson he would get DESTROYED!

  • Becken

Great hope he gets it and get his ass kicked yet again so he can retire for good this time.
Silva would beat him and he knows it.
All that fake ass trash talk isn’t getting anyone.
Nobody buys into that lame acting he tries to put on.
Give him Silva who hands him his own ass and then send the guy packing.

  • tazman

nick diaz is a freakin moron much like his little brother and g.s.p will kick nicks bud smokin ass
