Nick Diaz Will Get Top Contender Not GSP/Condit Winner When He Returns in 2013

Posted on by Damon Martin

Nick Diaz UFC 129When Nick Diaz is eligible to re-apply for a fight license in February 2013, a top fight in the UFC welterweight division will be awaiting him, but it won’t be a title fight.

Diaz lost his last bout by unanimous decision to current UFC interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit. He was then suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after testing positive for marijuana following the bout.

Because it was his second infraction for the same substance, Diaz was handed a one-year suspension by the commission. The suspension runs through Feb. 4, 2013.

The UFC’s welterweight division will move on in Diaz’s absence, most notably on Nov. 17 at UFC 154 when Georges St-Pierre returns to action to face Carlos Condit to unify the welterweight title.

Also on that card, Martin Kampmann meets Johny Hendricks in what is presumably a No. 1 contender’s fight with the winner getting the next crack at either St-Pierre or Condit.

While the reigning UFC champion still has to get through Condit before anything else can happen, St-Pierre has had a long standing feud with Diaz over the last two years, and a fight between the two rivals could be one of the most requested fights in UFC history.

UFC president Dana White is well aware that many fans are still clamoring for a St-Pierre vs. Diaz showdown, but it won’t be the fight welcoming the Stockton bad boy back to the cage even if GSP defeats Condit.

“When Diaz gets off suspension, he’ll have a fight against one of the top guys at 170 pounds, and then we’ll see what happens,” White said this week.

“I agree, a lot of people want to see that fight.”

Diaz’s camp has pushed for a fight against pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva, although there’s not much chance that bout actually comes to fruition.

What’s more likely is Diaz returns in early 2013 and faces any number of top eligible welterweight contenders currently without a fight. Names would include Jon Fitch, Josh Koscheck, or Jake Ellenberger, but right now Diaz still has to wait for the suspension he’s currently under to be lifted and then he can book his next fight.

The fact that this is “News” is pathetic.
He lost, so OF COURSE he has to fight a top contender to get another shot at the Champ.
I swear, it’s like his retardation rubs off on everybody.

    • Titus M

well as pathetic it may be to you, you have to remember the latest news of a fighter from Oregon losing his last fight pretty convincingly and getting a title shot. Diaz’s loss was close if not controversial. Enjoy the fights!

    • http://twitter.com/cagestokerblog Stoker’s Blog

@02b372ca06ae9fd868d859dbd5be7ab9:disqus your theory applies to everyone except Chael Sonnen—he gets to lose twice in his last four bouts but still somehow manages to get title-shot recognition. BTW, Diaz beat Condit on most unbiased people’s scorecards.

      • gnodeb

I don’t like/enjoy easy title shots based on hype. The fact that Sonnen got not one but three of them, is not a reason to give Diaz not one but two shots… For me this sport is less and less exiting because of match making based on marketability…

      • shakejunt

        don’t forget overeem.

by the way how does one gauge, in an unbiased manner, whether or not someone else is biased?

    • Fightfankevin

couldnt agree more Corey, nick blows his title shot by assuming he has special priveledges to skip press conferences, still gets interim title shot, loses that, then tests positive for drugs. Where in there would he deserve a shot?

      • stevemcz11

I dont think Nick needed an Interim title. He was the number one contender when he came over from SF. He was told he would fight GSP. Then he ends up accepting a fight with /bj and won. Then accepts a fight with Condit and lost and then Condit doesnt fight anybody anymore. At least Diaz was accepting fights.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sammy.joe.315 Sammy Joe

Let him fight Diego Sanchez rematch sounds like a fight people would want to watch

  • lowlb

Nick loses to Mary every time. Nick needs a new corner/ new coaches. Loyalty is his only vice. He was winning the fight against Condit, then came round 3 when his corner needed to tell him “you lost that round on points” He then proceeded to lose 4 & 5 on points as well. His corner let him down. That fight was Nick’s to win. I wonder if Nick can hang with a smaller, stronger fighter like Hendricks or Ellenberger? We’ll see….

    • Kris-tyahn

Listen Diaz is a pro fighter, if he really needs someone else who’s not in the Octagon fighting to tell him he lost that round, then apparently he has no common sense and shouldn’t be fighting if he can’t tell whether or not he won or lost. Also, it was Diazs fault for not changing his “game plan” after the 3rd or even half way through the 4th round, but he continued to do the same BS and it cost him, his fault. Though, I agree his corner is also too blame, but so is Diaz.

      • Triggerman99

What do you think cornermen are for? It’s their job to tell him what to do to improve his chances of winning. It’s hard enough for a fighter to win a fight, he doesn’t need to be keeping score on top of that. If it’s not the corner’s job to let him know how he’s doing, who’s is it? Condit’s?

  • Logic

marijuana is not a performance enhancing drug

    • macgrubber

      bad troll bro

    • bajafox

lol, depends on the strain. A pure 100% sativa is better than any energy drink on the planet

  • julian moran

Diaz would beat all these guys.
Diaz vs Hendricks would go like Diaz vs Paul Daley
Diaz vs Kampmann would go like Diaz vs Evangelista Santos minus the kicks,
Diaz vs Ellenberger would be like Diaz vs Zaromskis.
Diaz vs Fitch is another easy win for Diaz.
Condit and GSP however would probably win by way of running away and laying down.

    • Danny

Agree!!! Like him or not Diaz is a tough talented fighter that doesn’t run like a little bitch. His fights aren’t usually boring like the dude with the belt wrapped around his waist.

      • shakejunt

so by your logic dan hardy is the real champion because he can lose every fight but still be exciting enough to keep around?

        • Danny

lol how did you come up with that after what I said. I never said Diaz should be champion because he is exciting I was merely stating a fact that he fights for the fans and not for points like the current champ

          • shakejunt

well you sound pretty bitter about a fight that happened like half a year ago and that would imply that you think he should be champ presumably on the basis that he was more aggressive/exciting

          • Triggerman99

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anybody jump so far to conclusions like you are doing. Pick fights much? lol

      • dathump

Diaz is a great boxer and BJJ specialist, the issue with the Condit fight is Condit read him like a book, Diaz ia a punches in bunches kind of fighter, a brawler, not overly accurate or powerfull, but tends to accumulate damage and then go for the stopage or submission, Conduit studied this and figured a way to beat him. He was smart, chances of stopping or submitting Diaz are slim, so what did he do, pretty much fought a Diaz style fight with footwork.

    • http://twitter.com/CombatScienceMA CombatScienceMMA

lol … Hendricks is a high level wrestler compared to Daley. Kampmann is a world class kickboxer who took on top guys in the UFC compared to Santos (who I do like btw) Ellenberger would wreck Zaromskis. Jon Fitch an easy win? I’m sure considering he’s been stopped once ever in the UFC. GSP? I don’t think I’ve ever seen him run away, I don’t think that’s how you become the WW Kingpin.

    • Kris-tyahn

      Bahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Wow, I really needed that, thank you. Diaz lost to Riggs, Sherk and Sanchez when they weren’t all that great, lost to a “safe” Condit and he couldn’t even finish a human punching bag in BJ Penn, after BJ was gassed and no longer fighting, but just trying to survive/last until the 3rd bell rings. But I see your point …… wink wink.

I don’t know what’s funnier, you comparing world class fighters to the bums Diaz fought in Strikeforce or that 3 morons actually agreed with you?!? Fitch would be an easy win, but Diaz lost to KJ Noons! Ugh okay.

      • Triggerman99

I always love that arguement about BJ. People try to discredit Diaz for working BJ over by saying BJ is over the hill or overrated or whatever, even though BJ was coming a draw with Fitch, who was at the time #2 in the world. Nobody was saying anything negative about BJ, but then Diaz clobbers him, and suddenly BJ’s not that good. LOL! It never gets old!!

  • http://twitter.com/Uncanny390 Timothy Malone

People need to respect Nick Diaz. He holds a UFC world record. Nobody has ever managed to get kicked in a single fight as many times as he has. Until you have received dozens and dozens of kicks in a fight without doing anything about it, show some respect for the true master.

  • No name

    Fitch would smother him

  • Gigi

diaz is gonna come back and crush all of these bitches imho

    • Kris-tyahn

He couldn’t beat a “safe” Condit, what proof or what events would cause you to say such an uneducated thing?!? Diaz will be in some entertaining fights, but not a chance will he run off 3 or more Wins vs. top WWs, let alone beat “crush all of these bitches”. My question is … If Diaz lost to one of those so called “bitches” what does that make him? Can’t wait to see your response.

      • Gigi

he learned his lesson from condit fight, hes gonna come back better and with a diff mind set,u wont see a “i just wna scrap” diaz, with a better tactical approach i think he is right there top ~ 3-4 ww fighter

  • http://twitter.com/CombatScienceMA CombatScienceMMA

I love Nick Diaz. But marijuana is illegal under federal law. I doesn’t matter if it’s performance enhancing or not. If the commission says you can’t have it or any traces of it in your system then that’s just how it is. But in his case specifically it’s complete b.s that he was suspended for a year. I could see hefty fines maybe even 6 months tops. Can’t wait for him to get back.

    • shakejunt

his first suspension was 6 months, but he failed again in the same state so they stuck it to him.

      • http://twitter.com/CombatScienceMA CombatScienceMMA

Ah good point my friend. I know this was his second time but I forgot it was the same state. I see you on here a lot please be sure to follow me on fbook and twitter as well.

    • dathump

It is a performance enhancing drug when it comes to pain tolarance, and when you get punched in the face for a living, i would say it helps. Many other employers would outright fire an employee for a second failed drug test, so Diaz should be grateful for only a year

      • http://twitter.com/CombatScienceMA CombatScienceMMA

I’m not sure about that. i don’t smoke and I don’t know anyone whos smoked and has said its easier to take a punch to the face high. I am only aware of its positive effects on people with chronic pain. Im all for it. Better than alchohol for sure. But you are right he is lucky to still have a job and be eligable for a license in that state again. eh what the hell war diaz!

      • mu_shin

Nick was not high in the cage. He was suspended for metabolites of marijuana, meaning the chemicals left in the system long after the THC is processed by the body. I’ve read that some jujutsu guys like Eddie Bravo sometimes roll in the gym on weed to stimulate creativity and relaxation, but don’t think anyone, even a devote’ like Nick Diaz, would be stupid enough to fight while high. And as far as getting punched in the face, even if you took oxycontin, a powerful narcotic pain killer, it’s still going to hurt like hell. Been punched in the face plenty, and used weed for over 40 years, no performance enhancement there in my experience.

      • sofhanson

good point never thought of that, and it also helps calm the nerves which plagues most fighters before huge fights

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=759915261 Harry Hopper

Actually it does not calm the nerves, if anything it does the opposite, it causes anxiety. And as far as chronic pain goes it does very little !
People think it is this great cancer fighter but most people don’t know that Marijuana smoke has 70% more cancer causing agents than cigarette smoke. FACT

  • http://www.facebook.com/christos.tziotas Christos Tziotas

what happend to change nick diaz retirement? he said after the condit match that he was retired? Now suddenly Dana is talking about setting him up with a top contender..

    • DrRJE

he said he didn’t wanna get in the cage with people who don’t want to fight. He’d rather stop fighting than have to play dancing with the mma-stars when he comes to fight.

  • shakejunt

“record” usually implies a quantifiable statistic, you can’t hold a record for being the first of something

    • p3ezt

but reaching a number of something more than anyone else ever has means you are the first to do it?

      • http://twitter.com/AyDashTee Allen-Tom Ngoboka

ENGLISH muthafucka, DO YOU SPEAK IT?

  • uncle

    koshceck no way

  • http://twitter.com/Michaelchimique michaelchimique

alright i’m not normally someone to take nick diaz side on anything but this is bs. alistair overeem was suspended for elevated testosterone which is caused from juicing and he’s fighting for the title. diaz gets suspended for breaking the rules and he doesn’t get a title shot. yeah talk about double standard.

    • macgrubber

ya but diaz is like a scrawny 170 lb women with a swimmers body. Overeem is a 265 lb monster. plz dont compare the two bro its offensive to the reem.

      • Triggerman99

What are you even talking about? Do you even know where you are right now? lol

        • http://twitter.com/spencerprattsux Big Bird

Dude has been pinching off Diaz’s stash. It does not matter that Reem beat Brock “The Turtler” Lesnar because honestly Brock wanted nothing to do with the UFC any more and gave himself a way out. Diaz had to deal with a points fighter who refused to even take more than two shots at a time then run away. Diaz is getting screwed just like Hendo with Chael jumping in front of him.

    • dathump

Overeem is coming of a tko win and diaz a desision loss, thats the differance

      • http://twitter.com/Michaelchimique michaelchimique

a win that can be now questioned as legitimate since he’s failed a drug test

  • dathump

I have said it before, Diaz has a stand up fighting style that is lots of punches, with little power, thats the way it is supposed to be. its designed to aggravate his opponnent, cause damage by accumulation, not wear himself out, all while scoring points, the problem is Condit moved alot and was more accurate with his strikes, he beat him at his own game. I mind you Condit wasn’t as charismatic at it

    • http://twitter.com/spencerprattsux Big Bird

Considering half of Diaz’s 26 wins are by TKO/KO and that Diaz likes to bang which Carlos can’t do at all, there is a huge difference.

  • Triggerman99

Did anybody really think Diaz was going to get a title shot coming off a loss AND a suspension? Come on, I’m a huge Diaz fan, but there was just no way that was gonna happen. if he only lost without being suspended, and was able to talk his way into fights even half as well as Chael Sonnen, then maybe he would have had a chance.

    • http://twitter.com/spencerprattsux Big Bird

Well Chael did the almost the exact same thing so whats wrong? Chael hasn’t even won a single LHW fight in the UFC and is fighting JBJ for the title in April. What is the difference other than Diaz is a real fighter who lets his fighting do most of the talking for him?

      • Triggerman99

Like I said, i’m a huge Diaz fan, and i would love to see him fight for the title. The difference here is that Sonnen lost his last fight. Diaz lost his last fight AND was suspended afterward. That’s 2 big reasons why Diaz won’t begetting a title shot, while Chael only had one reason. I wish Chael didn’t get special concessions for running his mouth, but it is what it is. I for one am happy that Diaz just fights, and doesn’t spew b#ll$hit like that. It’s pathetic.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1232040015 Jesse Malloy

I love Nick, but I really want the winner of hendricks/kampmann to fight the winner of gsp/condit. cause you know, thats what they said was gonna happen. They also told Hendricks he was no 1 contender for beating Koscheck, but nooope.

  • stevemcz11

    Nick Diaz vs Rory Macdonald!

  • rudy

people forget he can legally smoke in cali so its not coming out in less than a month
